What PSU Do I Need for an RTX 2060? Choosing the Right Power Supply

A quality 500W PSU is NVIDIA’s minimum for a standard RTX 2060, but 550W is the sensible choice for most new builds. Choose 650W for high-power CPUs, overclocking or future upgrades.

A standard GeForce RTX 2060 needs a quality 500W PSU at minimum and one 8-pin PCIe power connector under NVIDIA’s reference specification. For a new build, a reputable 550W PSU is the sensible baseline. Choose 650W if you have a high-power CPU, overclocking, several drives, an aging power supply, or plans for a more demanding future GPU.

The RTX 2060 SUPER is different: NVIDIA specifies a 550W minimum for it.

NVIDIA’s 500W figure refers to the whole computer’s recommended system power supply, not a graphics card that consumes 500W by itself. Your CPU, storage, cooling, fans, motherboard and any overclocking also affect the appropriate PSU.

Is 500W enough for an RTX 2060?

Usually, yes—provided it is a reputable, healthy 500W unit paired with a mainstream CPU and a stock RTX 2060. A known-good 500W PSU meets NVIDIA’s stated baseline.

That does not mean every PSU labelled “500W” is suitable. A cheap or old unit may have weak 12V capacity, deteriorated components, unclear specifications, no proper PCIe cable, or a peak rather than continuous rating. A 500W unit also leaves less margin for a high-power processor, overclocking, or a future upgrade.

Is 550W the best choice?

For many new RTX 2060 systems, a quality 550W PSU is the best balance. It exceeds NVIDIA’s 500W baseline while avoiding the unnecessary cost and size of a much larger unit.

  • Stock RTX 2060 plus an efficient mainstream CPU: quality 500W–550W.
  • Typical Ryzen 5 or Core i5 gaming system: quality 550W.
  • Mainstream eight-core CPU: usually 550W, subject to the exact processor.
  • High-power enthusiast CPU, factory-overclocked card or many accessories: 650W.

These are practical system-building recommendations, not universal manufacturer requirements. More wattage will not make an RTX 2060 run faster; it provides capacity and headroom.

When should you choose 650W?

A quality 650W PSU is reasonable when:

  • Your CPU can draw substantially more power than a mainstream gaming processor.
  • You plan to overclock the CPU or GPU.
  • The graphics card is factory-overclocked and its manufacturer lists a higher recommendation.
  • You have numerous drives, pumps, expansion cards or fans.
  • You want to reuse the PSU with a future graphics-card upgrade.
  • The price difference between suitable 550W and 650W models is small.

Do not buy 650W solely because a higher number sounds safer. A well-designed 550W PSU is preferable to an anonymous or poorly documented 750W unit.

RTX 2060 versus RTX 2060 SUPER

Do not treat these cards as having identical PSU requirements. NVIDIA specifies 500W for the standard RTX 2060 and 550W for the RTX 2060 SUPER. Individual partner cards can also differ. For example, MSI lists 184W power consumption and a 550W recommended PSU for its RTX 2060 SUPER Ventus GP OC.

The RTX 2060 12GB also requires an exact-model check. The memory capacity alone is not enough to establish the connector and PSU recommendation for every board-partner design.

What power connector does an RTX 2060 use?

The reference RTX 2060 uses one 8-pin PCIe connector. In many PSUs, this is a 6+2-pin PCIe plug that clips together to form an 8-pin connector. Confirm the exact card’s manual or product page because partner models can use different arrangements.

  • ATX 3.1 Platform + PCIe 5.1 Ready: Built to the ATX 3.1 standard.
  • Integrated Cable Management: Built-in routing channels + Velcro straps on the PSU housing help you tuck excess cable length for a cleaner back-side layout and better airflow.
  • Quiet Cooling: 135mm hydraulic-bearing fan optimized for low noise, providing efficient cooling and quiet operation under typical use.
  • 5-Year Warranty.

Important installation checks:

  • Use a cable labelled PCIe, not the CPU/EPS cable.
  • Do not force an EPS/CPU 8-pin plug into the graphics card.
  • Make sure the connector is fully seated and its latch has engaged.
  • Use the modular cables supplied with that PSU.
  • Never casually mix modular cables from another brand or PSU family; the PSU-side pinout may differ even when the plug looks identical.

Do not treat Molex-to-PCIe adapters as a normal solution. If the PSU lacks the correct native cable, replacement is generally the safer approach.

How to check an existing PSU

  1. Identify the exact graphics card. Check the manufacturer, model name and connector requirement.
  2. Identify the CPU. A high-power CPU can change the answer substantially.
  3. Check continuous wattage. Do not rely on a peak wattage claim.
  4. Inspect the 12V rating. The CPU and GPU draw primarily from the 12V output. A reputable modern PSU normally makes this specification clear.
  5. Check the PCIe cable. Confirm that the PSU has the required native 6+2 or 8-pin PCIe connector.
  6. Consider age and condition. A used PSU’s safety cannot be determined from its wattage alone.
  7. Confirm the form factor. The PSU must physically fit the case and use the correct ATX, SFX or SFX-L format.
  8. Account for extras. Include drives, pumps, expansion cards, large fan arrays and overclocking.

A calculator can provide a second estimate. Corsair’s PSU calculator accepts the CPU and GPU and accounts for memory, M.2 and SATA drives, cooling, fans and overclocking. Because it recommends that company’s products, use it as a useful estimate rather than a brand-neutral verdict.

What makes a good PSU?

Look beyond the wattage and efficiency badge. Prioritize:

  • A documented model from a reputable manufacturer.
  • Continuous-rated output with a strong, clearly specified 12V rail.
  • The correct number of PCIe connectors.
  • Appropriate over-voltage, over-current, over-power, short-circuit and over-temperature protections where documented.
  • A meaningful warranty and evidence of reliable independent testing.
  • Dimensions and cabling that suit your case.

80 PLUS and Cybenetics labels primarily communicate efficiency; they do not, by themselves, prove overall electrical quality. For example, Corsair lists the RM650 as a 650W unit with 650W available on its 12V output on the product page. That kind of complete specification is more useful than a large wattage number alone.

  • All cables are black and not ketchup and mustard colored

OEM and small-form-factor PCs need extra checks

If the RTX 2060 is going into a Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer or similar prebuilt, do not automatically buy a standard 550W ATX PSU. OEM systems may use proprietary motherboard connectors, unusual mounting points, nonstandard PSU sizes, restricted case clearance or BIOS limitations.

Small-form-factor systems may require an SFX or SFX-L PSU rather than ATX. Wattage, dimensions, cable length and connector clearance all matter. Verify the exact computer model and case before ordering.

Could the PSU be causing crashes?

Sudden shutdowns, reboots or black screens under gaming load can indicate inadequate capacity or a failing PSU, but they are not proof. Similar symptoms can come from a defective GPU, loose connector, overheating, bad RAM, driver problems, motherboard firmware or poor case airflow.

Try this basic sequence:

  1. Power down and reseat the graphics card and its PCIe connector.
  2. Confirm that the cable is PCIe rather than CPU/EPS.
  3. Check GPU and CPU temperatures and update or clean-install graphics drivers if appropriate.
  4. Inspect for unusual PSU fan noise, clicking, electrical odour or visible damage. Stop using a unit showing dangerous signs.
  5. When possible, test with another known-good PCIe cable or PSU.
  6. If shutdowns happen only under load, assess PSU capacity, PSU health, thermals and GPU stability together.
