“Glitching” can mean very different problems: a crash, freeze, stutter, graphical corruption, controller failure, launch error, or online lag. The fastest way to find the cause is to classify the symptom, then determine whether it affects one game, every game, offline play, or only online matches.
One game usually points to its files, settings, mods, or a bad update. Problems across several games make drivers, operating-system issues, overheating, storage, memory, or other hardware more likely.

Quick diagnosis: what kind of glitch is it?
| Symptom | Likely areas to investigate |
|---|---|
| Crash on launch | Corrupt files, missing runtime, driver issue, overlay, mod, or unsupported hardware |
| Crash after several minutes | Heat, power instability, driver timeout, memory, or GPU instability |
| Freeze while audio continues | Game thread, driver, storage hitch, or background-software conflict |
| Low FPS everywhere | High settings, wrong GPU, thermal throttling, driver problems, or a hardware bottleneck |
| Periodic stutter | Shader compilation, asset streaming, storage, background activity, or network updates |
| Flickering, colored blocks, lines, or missing textures | Rendering bug, driver, cable, display, GPU, VRAM, or temperature problem |
| Rubber-banding or teleporting | Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, or server problems |
| Controller disconnects | Battery, cable, Bluetooth or USB interference, firmware, or pairing |
| Only one save or profile is affected | Corrupted save, account settings, or cloud-sync conflict |
| Problem began after an update | Patch regression, changed driver interaction, incompatible mod, or rebuilt shader cache |
These are starting points, not diagnoses. The same symptom can have several causes.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First test: one game or every game?
- Close and restart the game.
- Restart the PC or console completely.
- Test a second game.
- Try the affected game offline, if possible.
- Test a new save, profile, or default graphics preset.
- Note whether the problem started after a game, driver, firmware, mod, or Windows update.
If only one title fails, concentrate on its files, settings, requirements, mods, and known issues. If several games fail, investigate system software, temperatures, drivers, storage, memory, power, and background programs first. Steam similarly recommends ruling out common causes systematically because launch failures can result from many different hardware and software configurations.

Safe fixes to try first
Restart and check official status
Restart the game, launcher, and system. Then check the publisher’s known-issues page, patch notes, and the platform’s service-status page. A broken update or server outage affects many players and will not be repaired by reinstalling your copy.
Update carefully
Install the game update, operating-system updates, and official graphics drivers from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Update console firmware through the console’s normal settings. On PC, relevant chipset, audio, motherboard, and controller updates may also matter.
Updating is not a guarantee. If the problem began immediately after a graphics-driver update, check the game and GPU manufacturer’s release notes and consider returning to the previous stable driver. Record the version you tested rather than repeatedly changing drivers.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDisable mods and overlays
Temporarily disable mods, ReShade, trainers, custom launch options, Discord or Game Bar overlays, recording software, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, tuning tools, and overclocks. Rename a mod folder instead of deleting it, then launch the unmodified game. If it works, reinstall compatible mods one at a time and back up saves first.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If security software appears to be interfering, use a controlled test, restore protection immediately, and consult the game or security vendor’s guidance.
Repair corrupted game files
Interrupted downloads, disk errors, antivirus quarantine, mismatched mods, cloud-sync conflicts, and corrupt shader or configuration data can break a game.
- Close the game completely and restart the launcher.
- Use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking function.
- Launch without mods or custom options.
- Back up saves and reset configuration files only if needed.
- Reinstall only after verification and configuration troubleshooting fail.
On Steam, use the game’s properties menu and choose Verify integrity of game files. Other launchers use different labels. Verification repairs installed content, but it cannot fix a corrupted save, incompatible mod, driver, server, or failing drive. If the same files are repeatedly repaired, investigate storage, permissions, antivirus interference, and the update process.

Check requirements and the selected GPU
Compare the game publisher’s current requirements with your CPU, GPU and VRAM, system RAM, operating-system version, graphics API, available storage, and whether an SSD is required. Minimum requirements generally indicate basic compatibility, not a guaranteed resolution, frame rate, ray-tracing mode, or stutter-free experience. Recommended requirements are not a performance guarantee either.
On laptops and systems with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the game is using the intended GPU. A game that suddenly runs at very low FPS may be using integrated graphics, especially after a driver or Windows change. Requirements can differ by game edition, operating system, and graphics preset.

Reduce settings—but use this as a test
Temporarily lower resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, crowd density, shadows, and the frame-rate target. If performance improves, the system may be GPU-, VRAM-, CPU-, or temperature-limited. Shader rebuilding after a game or driver update can also cause temporary stutter.
Lower settings do not repair overheating, unstable hardware, a faulty cable, corrupted files, or network problems. If visual artifacts remain, do not keep lowering settings indefinitely.
Check heat and hardware stability
Heat is more plausible when problems appear after the system warms up, fans become unusually loud, performance drops over time, or the PC shuts down, reboots, black-screens, or reports driver timeouts.
- Make sure fans are spinning and vents are unobstructed.
- Keep laptops and consoles on a hard surface with adequate airflow.
- Clean dust from accessible vents and filters.
- Monitor temperatures with a reputable hardware-monitoring tool.
- Return CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
- Test a less demanding game.
There is no universal safe temperature; limits vary by component and manufacturer. Stop using the system and seek repair advice if it repeatedly shuts down, smells burnt, has liquid damage, or shows persistent artifacts.
Graphics corruption: game bug or hardware warning?
For flickering, colored squares, lines, missing textures, or black screens, test the whole display path:
- Capture a screenshot or video.
- If the artifact appears in the capture, the game or rendering pipeline is likely involved.
- If it is visible on the monitor but absent from the capture, try another HDMI or DisplayPort cable, port, display, refresh rate, HDR mode, or VRR setting.
- Test another game and check the desktop or boot screen.
- Remove overclocks and update or roll back the graphics driver.
Artifacts in multiple games, menus, the desktop, or during boot raise concern about the GPU, VRAM, power, monitor, or cable. They do not prove that the GPU is failing, but they deserve hardware testing rather than endless graphics-setting changes.

Windows-specific fixes
Use a clean boot to find software conflicts
Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure can identify a conflicting startup service or application:
- Search Windows for
msconfigand open System Configuration. - Open Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, and disable the remaining services.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable enabled startup items.
- Restart and test the game.
- Re-enable items systematically to isolate the conflict.
- Restore Normal startup after testing.
Record what you disable. A clean boot temporarily removes functionality and should not become a permanent configuration unless you understand the consequences.
Repair Windows system files
If crashes affect multiple games, Windows updates fail, or the system freezes unexpectedly, open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

Older games may stop working after an operating-system upgrade because of changes to architecture, security, launchers, DirectX, copy protection, or anti-cheat. In Windows 11, try Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter > Run. Older Windows versions may use a different path.
Compatibility mode is not a universal fix and can interfere with modern launchers or anti-cheat. Look for a newer version or publisher-supported patch first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage and system health
Keep adequate free space on the game drive and check whether Windows reports drive errors. If possible, move one affected game to another drive. Do not repeatedly reinstall games onto a drive that is failing, and back up important saves before repair, reset, or recovery operations.
A full Windows reset is a last resort for broad system problems, not an early response to one broken game. It can cause data loss and will not fix a server outage or defective hardware.
Online lag is not the same as low FPS
- High ping: actions take longer to reach the server.
- Packet loss: data is lost, causing rubber-banding or missing updates.
- Jitter: latency varies, making movement inconsistent.
- Server trouble: many players experience the same problem.
- Local performance trouble: the game looks choppy even when network statistics are normal.
- Try offline or single-player play.
- Check the game’s official server-status page.
- Compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi when practical.
- Stop large downloads, streams, and cloud synchronization.
- Test another online game.
- Restart the router if the problem appears local and persistent.
Changing DNS is not a first-line solution for packet loss or poor Wi-Fi. If offline play is smooth but online matches are not, focus on latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi, NAT, and server status rather than graphics settings.
Console troubleshooting
Console menus and recovery options vary by model and firmware, so do not apply PC instructions blindly. Fully restart the console, install system and game updates, check available storage, test another title, and check platform service status. If the issue persists, back up or confirm cloud saves before reinstalling. System-wide crashes, graphical corruption, repeated shutdowns, or storage errors should be escalated to the platform manufacturer.
What not to do
- Do not download random DLL files or drivers from unofficial sites.
- Do not use registry cleaners, “game boosters,” or third-party driver-updater tools as a first fix.
- Do not leave antivirus disabled.
- Do not factory-reset Windows or a console before protecting saves and other data.
- Do not replace a GPU, RAM, or power supply because one game crashes.
- Do not open a console or replace thermal paste casually; it can cause damage or affect coverage.
When to contact support
Contact the game publisher when one title remains broken after updates, file repair, mod removal, and configuration testing—especially after a known patch. Contact the platform or hardware manufacturer when several games fail, the system shuts down, artifacts appear outside the game, or storage and display tests point to hardware.
Include:
- Platform and exact model
- Game version and operating-system version
- CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage details on PC
- The exact error message
- When the problem began and what changed
- Whether other games and offline play are affected
- Steps already attempted
- Crash logs, screenshots, or a video
Microsoft, Steam, and PlayStation provide additional official troubleshooting guidance: Steam launch troubleshooting, PlayStation PC support, Microsoft clean boot, DISM and SFC, and Windows compatibility troubleshooting.
Windows 10 note
Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That means normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided in the usual way. An individual game may still run, but compatibility and security considerations are different from those on a supported Windows version.
