Video games do not uniformly help or hurt students’ academic performance. A 2026 meta-analysis found a small negative association between problematic gaming and academic achievement, while research on educational games found improved learning in structured comparisons. Neither finding means that ordinary recreational gaming reliably changes grades: the studies examine different kinds of play and different outcomes, and observational associations do not establish cause and effect.

What studies show about problematic gaming and achievement

Problematic gaming is not the same as simply playing video games. Studies in this area assess problematic use or risk, then examine its relationship with outcomes such as academic achievement or GPA.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis combined 30 studies, 99 effect sizes, and 167,774 participants. It found a small negative association between problematic videogame use and academic achievement (r = −.166). Longitudinal findings were compatible with a bidirectional relationship: problematic gaming may interfere with schoolwork, while difficulties with academic performance may also precede or contribute to problematic gaming. The association alone cannot show which direction causes the other. Paterna et al. (2026)

A 2024 systematic review of 27 empirical studies likewise found that most reported a negative relationship between problematic gaming and academic performance. But the pattern was not uniform: many recent studies found no significant predictive effect from problematic gaming, or found academic performance predicted problematic gaming. Most of the studies were cross-sectional, meaning they measured variables at one point rather than establishing how they changed over time. Alzahrani and Griffiths (2024)

These findings concern problematic use, not a universal effect of playing games. They do not establish that all students who play, or all students who play often, will earn lower grades.

What educational-game studies show

Educational-game research asks a different question: can a game designed for instruction improve learning compared with a nongame activity or another game design? A 2016 K–16 meta-analysis reported a positive learning effect for digital games versus nongame conditions (g = 0.33; 95% CI 0.19–0.48, across 57 comparisons). Augmented game designs also showed a positive effect (g = 0.34; 95% CI 0.17–0.51, across 20 comparisons). SAGE/American Educational Research Association (2016)

These are measured learning outcomes from designed comparisons. They are not evidence that recreational play, or commercial games in general, improves report-card grades. The result depends on the game, how it is used for instruction, the comparison activity, and what learning outcome is measured.

Why cognitive benefits do not automatically mean better grades

A 2026 meta-analysis of 133 studies and 14,245 participants found small positive associations between game play and cognitive outcomes, including memory, spatial ability, visual attention, cognitive control, and intelligence. Zhao et al. (2026)

Cognitive tests measure particular abilities; grades and academic achievement reflect learning and performance across school subjects and settings. A positive result on a cognitive measure therefore does not establish that recreational gaming improves GPA or classroom achievement.

Genre matters too. An action-game meta-analysis reported positive cognitive effects, but cautioned that publication bias could inflate estimates and that findings about action games should not be generalized to all games. Bediou et al. (2018)

How to interpret a study about gaming and school

Before applying a finding to a student, check what the study actually measured and compared:

  • Type of play: ordinary recreational play, a screen for problematic use, or a game deliberately used as an educational intervention?
  • Outcome: grades or academic achievement, learning in a specific lesson, or a cognitive test?
  • Study design: a one-time association, a longitudinal relationship, or a controlled comparison?
  • Participants and games: which age or school group and which game type were studied?
  • Exposure: how much or how long participants played, if the study reported it?

These distinctions explain why apparently conflicting findings can both be valid: an educational game may support learning in a particular comparison, while problematic gaming is associated with lower achievement in observational studies. Neither result answers every question about gaming and grades.

What is not established

The evidence summarized here does not identify a universal number of gaming hours that is safe or harmful to academic performance. It also does not provide a complete ranking of effects by age, school level, or genre for direct grade outcomes. The 2026 problematic-use meta-analysis reported a greater association among university students in longitudinal analyses, but that finding does not resolve all subgroup comparisons. Paterna et al. (2026)

That review searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Web of Science, SciELO, and Dissertations & Theses Global through May 23, 2025. It included English- and Spanish-language studies and did not restrict geography or culture, so its coverage is broad but not exhaustive of all languages or sources. Paterna et al. (2026)
