Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA review embargo is the date and time when critics with advance access are allowed to publish. A review period is the amount of time those critics actually had to play and assess the game before that deadline. They are related, but they are not the same thing—and neither one is a score.
For buyers, the useful questions are how early the reviewer received access, which build and online features were available, how much of the game was tested, and whether the article is provisional. An embargo that lifts late can reflect spoiler concerns or limited access rather than poor quality, while an early review can still be incomplete.

Embargo and review period are different deadlines
Publishers often provide selected outlets with review copies before a game launches. The agreement may specify when coverage can appear and what material can be shown beforehand. That publication restriction is the review embargo.

| Term | What it controls | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Review embargo | The earliest agreed publication time for participating outlets. The agreement may also restrict footage, screenshots, social posts or story details. | Game quality, final score, review thoroughness or whether every mode works at launch. |
| Review period | How long a reviewer had access to play, test systems and write before publication. | That the reviewer finished the game, experienced live servers or tested every planned update. |
| Review in progress | A provisional report published while important testing remains. | A settled verdict. Details and scores can change when testing is complete. |
The precise terms vary by publisher, game and outlet. An embargo can cover a scored review, an unscored preview, or both. Some agreements permit only limited screenshots before release; others allow broader discussion but still prohibit plot spoilers. Treat the published policy or the outlet’s disclosure as the authority for that specific game.
How the pre-release process works
The path from a review code to a buyer-facing article usually contains several separate events. Keeping them distinct prevents a common mistake: assuming that a launch-day review was necessarily written after a full, launch-ready playthrough.
- Access is granted. A publisher or platform holder gives an outlet a code, a review build, a hardware unit or access to a controlled test environment. The build may differ from the retail version and can receive patches before launch.
- The outlet accepts conditions. The agreement can set a publication time and restrictions on captured footage, screenshots, spoilers, multiplayer discussion or unreleased content. An outlet may also publish its own policy about scores and unfinished testing.
- The reviewer plays within the available window. The reviewer records progress, tests systems and writes while the clock runs. A large role-playing game may require far more time than a short campaign, and online features may not be active yet.
- The embargo lifts. At the agreed date and time, participating outlets can publish the material covered by the agreement. Not every outlet has to publish immediately, and an outlet that received access late may publish after the deadline.
- Launch conditions arrive. A day-one patch, public servers, user-created content or a larger player population can change what is testable. A pre-launch article cannot honestly report on conditions that did not exist yet.
- The article may be updated. If the outlet labels its work as in progress, it can add observations, change a score or replace an early impression with a final review after more testing.
This sequence explains why “reviews are out” is not a single guarantee about coverage. It tells you that a publication gate has opened, not that every reviewer had equal access or reached the same point.

Why an embargo time is not a quality rating
There is no authoritative, broadly applicable statistic showing that a particular embargo length predicts a game’s quality. Community theories often treat a late embargo as a warning and an early one as a vote of confidence, but timing alone cannot support either conclusion.
Publishers can choose a late release for reasons unrelated to quality. Kotaku has described synchronized timing as potentially useful because it discourages outlets from racing to publish first at the expense of careful coverage. An agreement can also be designed to reduce spoilers, especially for a story-driven sequel.
Axios reported a 2021 example involving No More Heroes 3. A public-relations representative said, “We originally set our review embargo date to minimize the chance of spoilers for fans, as they have been waiting for quite a while for the third installment,” and later added, “But in light of fan demand expressed today online, we are re-adjusting the date.” The embargo moved from nine hours after release to the moment of launch after criticism. The change demonstrates that timing can reflect spoiler management and audience reaction, not a hidden score.

Conversely, an early embargo does not prove that a game is polished. An outlet can receive a favorable schedule but still lack access to endgame content, a complete campaign or stable online features. Evaluate what the review actually tested rather than inferring a verdict from the clock.
How much review time is enough?
No universal review period exists. The right amount depends on genre, campaign length, progression systems, technical state and whether the game requires a live population. A short linear game can be assessed differently from a 50-hour role-playing game, and both can be affected by a launch-day patch.
Big Games Machine’s 2024 survey illustrates the pressure created by short windows. It reports that 67% of respondents wanted review copies at least three weeks before release. Within the survey, 25% preferred four weeks as a minimum and 10% preferred more than four weeks. These are preferences among the survey’s respondents, not a census of all reviewers or a rule used by every outlet.
The same report uses games that can take more than 50 hours to complete as an example of why a brief window is difficult. One anonymous respondent wrote, “It’s really awful when you get a key for a lengthy game such as a JRPG that’s 50+ hours long and have three days to play and finish a review before the embargo is up.” That comment describes one respondent’s experience; it is not evidence that every long game receives only three days.
| Evidence | How to interpret it as a buyer |
|---|---|
| 67% wanted at least three weeks of access (Big Games Machine, 2024) | Many surveyed reviewers consider three weeks a useful minimum, but the figure does not establish an industry standard. |
| 25% preferred four weeks minimum (same survey) | A substantial subset wanted more time than three weeks; this is a respondent preference. |
| 10% preferred more than four weeks (same survey) | Some reviewers seek still longer windows for demanding games; it does not describe typical publisher practice. |
| Some larger games exceed 50 hours (same report) | Completion time can exceed a short embargo, so a launch article may cover only a portion of the experience. |
Look for the reviewer’s stated access date when it is disclosed. “Received a code three days ago” carries a different evidentiary weight from “played for several weeks,” even when both articles go live at the same embargo.

A review in progress is not a euphemism for a final review. It is a deliberate statement that some evidence is missing. GameSpot explains that early pieces can precede assessment of online components, identify what remains to be done and change details or a score before finalization. Such coverage may be unscored or carry an explicit provisional label.

IGN similarly says it may withhold a final score or an opinion about online features until live testing is possible. The absence of a number is therefore informative: the outlet is signaling that assigning one would overstate what it knows.
Signals that the article is provisional
- A headline or label such as “in progress,” “early access review” or “initial impressions.”
- A statement that the score is withheld, subject to change or not yet assigned.
- A list of modes, chapters, difficulty levels or endgame systems still untested.
- A note that online servers, matchmaking or community features were unavailable before launch.
- An explicit promise to update the article after additional play, rather than a silent edit.
Use provisional coverage to learn about the parts the reviewer has played, not to fill in the missing sections yourself. If the feature you care about is listed as untested, the article cannot yet answer your buying question.
Why multiplayer and live-service games complicate launch reviews
For an offline game, the reviewer can often test the main systems before release. Multiplayer and live-service games depend on conditions that may not exist until launch: public servers, matchmaking populations, progression economies, seasonal events, anti-cheat systems and the behavior of a large player base.
IGN’s stated practice of waiting until launch to test live online elements means its final score may arrive after initial impressions. That delay is a methodological choice, not automatically a negative signal.
Kotaku’s coverage of Destiny provides an example of why an outlet might wait for live servers and later content before publishing a complete review. A reviewer who waits can evaluate connectivity, queues, cooperative activities and the first wave of player-facing content under conditions closer to those buyers will encounter.
When reading a multiplayer review, separate what was tested on private or review servers from what was observed after launch. A smooth pre-release session cannot establish how a public launch will perform, while an overloaded first day may not represent the stabilized service a week later.

Five axes for comparing reviews
When two outlets disagree, compare the evidence behind their conclusions instead of ranking them by publication time. These five axes reveal whether the apparent disagreement comes from different information.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Access lead time | When did the reviewer receive access, and how many days or weeks were available? | A longer window can permit more complete testing, while a short window may force a narrower scope. |
| Build and servers | Was the review build identical to the public launch build? Were public servers, patches and matchmaking live? | Different technical conditions can produce different performance and online conclusions. |
| Content reached | How much of the campaign, endgame, difficulty range and optional content was played? | A review covering only early chapters cannot establish late-game balance, pacing or payoff. |
| Publication status | Is the piece final and scored, or provisional and explicitly subject to change? | A number suggests a completed assessment only when the outlet says its required testing is done. |
| Disclosed limits | What could not be tested, and what future updates or live events might change the assessment? | Clear limits let you decide whether the missing evidence affects your own purchase. |
These axes are more useful than treating the embargo hour as a stand-alone quality signal. Two reviews can both be honest while reaching different conclusions because they played different builds, modes or stages of the service.

Embargo lifts before launch
Pre-launch publication gives buyers time to read before purchasing. It still does not prove that all launch patches, public servers or late-game content were available. Check the article’s access and testing notes.
Embargo lifts exactly at launch
Launch-time coverage may reflect a publisher’s desire to avoid spoilers or synchronize discussion. It can also mean reviewers had a short window. The timestamp itself does not distinguish those explanations.
Embargo lifts after launch
A post-launch review can indicate that the outlet needed live servers, more time or later content. It can also result from late code delivery or a publication agreement. Treat the delay as a prompt to inspect the stated reason, not as a score.

Reviews appear at different times
Outlets do not all receive codes simultaneously, and some choose not to publish until their own testing standard is met. A later article may contain more evidence; an earlier one may be useful for the sections already tested. Compare scope and conditions rather than assuming the first article is the most authoritative.

A buyer’s step-by-step checklist
- Find the article’s status. Confirm whether it is a final review, an unscored preview or a review in progress.
- Locate the access disclosure. Note when the reviewer received the code and whether the outlet states a playtime or completion point.
- Map the tested content to your priorities. If you care about co-op, endgame raids, competitive matchmaking or a specific platform, verify that those elements were actually available and tested.
- Read the technical conditions. Check whether the build included the day-one patch, whether servers were public and whether performance observations came from the platform you plan to use.
- Read the limitations paragraph. Identify any chapter, mode, online feature or future update the reviewer could not assess.
- Compare at least two scopes when opinions diverge. Use the five comparison axes—lead time, build and servers, content reached, publication status and disclosed limits—to explain the difference.
- Decide how much uncertainty you accept. If an untested feature is central to your purchase, waiting for a finalized assessment may be more rational than treating a provisional score as complete.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reading a late embargo as a hidden warning. Timing can be about spoilers, synchronization or access logistics.
- Reading an early embargo as a guarantee. Early publication does not prove that the reviewer completed the game or tested live features.
- Confusing “review copies sent” with “reviews complete.” Sending codes starts the review period; it does not indicate how much any outlet has played.
- Treating a missing score as evasive. A withheld number can accurately communicate that online or endgame testing is not yet possible.
- Assuming every outlet had the same build. Review builds, patches and server access can differ.
- Using one review to answer an untested question. If the article says a mode or feature remains unplayed, its verdict does not cover that evidence gap.
- Equating launch-day conditions with the permanent service. Server load, matchmaking population and planned content can change after release.
What a trustworthy review should disclose
A useful review does more than display a number. It tells readers enough about its evidence to judge relevance. Look for:
- The platform and build used.
- When access began or how long the reviewer played, if the outlet discloses it.
- Whether the campaign, endgame and optional systems were reached.
- Whether online testing occurred on private review servers or public launch servers.
- Any embargo restrictions that limited screenshots, footage or spoiler discussion.
- A clear label when the piece is provisional, unscored or scheduled for an update.
- Specific unknowns that could alter the conclusion.
Outlets have different standards, so disclosure will not look identical everywhere. The important point is that you can see the boundary between tested evidence and remaining uncertainty.
How to make a purchase decision under uncertainty
Use the review evidence in proportion to the risk of your decision. If the game is short, offline and fully tested in a final scored review, an early embargo may give you substantial information. If it is a long role-playing game reviewed after only a few days, the campaign’s later sections may remain unknown. If it is a live service with unavailable public servers, the most consequential evidence may not exist until after launch.
For a day-one purchase, prioritize a final review that covers the modes and platform you intend to use. For a game whose untested features determine its value, treat provisional coverage as a reason to wait for the missing evidence rather than as a positive or negative verdict. The decision is about how much uncertainty you are willing to buy, not about decoding a publisher’s timestamp.
Bottom line
An embargo tells you when participating critics may publish; a review period tells you how long they had to investigate. Neither is a quality score. Judge coverage by its access lead time, build and server conditions, content reached, provisional or final status and disclosed limits. That approach turns review timing from a rumor signal into practical evidence for your own buying decision.
