If a purchased game differs materially from the reviews or store description, document the mismatch and request a refund from the seller that processed the transaction. Act quickly: platform deadlines, playtime, downloads, streaming and your country can all affect eligibility. A request is not a guarantee, and a disappointing subjective experience is not automatically a legal defect.
Start by preserving the facts
Do not uninstall, alter files or delete purchase records before recording what happened. A clear, dated record gives customer support something concrete to assess and helps you distinguish an outdated review from a version-specific problem.

- Purchase details: save the receipt, order number, purchase date, account used and the seller’s name. A code bought from a retailer or key marketplace is handled by that seller, not necessarily by the platform where you activated it.
- Product claims: capture the current store listing, edition name, feature descriptions, system requirements and any trailer or product text that influenced your decision. Store pages change, so retain the wording shown when possible.
- Review evidence: note the review’s publication date, the game version tested, platform and hardware, and the specific statement that shaped your expectation. Keep the review URL or publication details for your own records.
- Your installation: record the installed version, platform, console or PC hardware, operating-system version, download or streaming status and total playtime. Screenshots, crash logs and a short video can demonstrate a reproducible fault.
- Updates: check the game’s patch notes or version history. A review may describe a launch build while your copy contains later changes, or an update may have introduced the issue.
These records support an explanation; they do not prove that a store must approve a refund.

“It was not as good as the reviews” is difficult for a support team to evaluate. Describe the difference in observable terms and separate an unmet preference from a claim that the product is unavailable, misrepresented or unusable.

Advertised content appears absent
Quote the exact store description or identify the named mode, feature, language, multiplayer option or edition bonus that is missing. State whether you checked the correct edition and completed any stated unlock or installation step.
The game does not run as represented
Give the hardware, graphics settings, error message, crash frequency and steps that reproduce the problem. A game that fails to launch or cannot access a prominently advertised function is a different case from one that runs but performs below your preferred frame rate.
The review and your version differ
Compare the review date and build with your installed version. Identify the platform and hardware used by the reviewer; console, PC and cloud versions can have different features or performance. Explain what changed rather than claiming that all reviews were misleading.

The experience is simply not for you
Disliking a genre, pacing, art style or difficulty level may not meet a platform’s fault standard. You can still ask for a refund under the seller’s voluntary policy, but describe the issue honestly and do not label a preference as a technical defect.
Refund rules differ by platform
Use the policy for the store region and account that made the purchase. The figures below are general conditions published by the platforms, not guarantees.

Valve’s policy expressly says, “even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.” Treat that as an invitation to request a review, not as an entitlement. PlayStation similarly notes that local law can provide additional rights when content is faulty.

Submit a strong request
- Confirm the seller. Check the receipt and payment statement. Send a Steam request to Steam for a Steam purchase, a PlayStation request for a PlayStation Store transaction, an Xbox request through Microsoft order history, or a request to the retailer that sold a code.
- Check the current regional policy. Select the country or store region tied to your account. Note the applicable deadline, playtime or download condition before you submit.
- Choose the official request path. Use the platform’s support form or order-history button rather than a social-media message. Sign in to the account that owns the transaction.
- State the transaction facts first. Include purchase date, order number, title, edition, platform, installed version and playtime or download status. Support can then locate the correct transaction.
- Describe one or two specific mismatches. Quote the relevant store claim, identify the review’s build and platform, and explain what you observed. For a fault, include the error, frequency and reproduction steps.
- Attach concise evidence. Provide screenshots, a short clip, crash information or the saved product description when the form permits attachments. Avoid a long emotional narrative or unsupported claims about what every buyer experienced.
- Ask for a refund, not an approval. Wording such as “I am requesting a refund because the advertised feature is unavailable on my platform” accurately states your position without asserting that the outcome is guaranteed.
- Keep the case number and response. Save confirmation emails and the date of any reply. If the request is denied, those records are useful for a permitted appeal or for the seller’s fault-reporting process.
When the review mismatch involves a defect
Use the seller’s fault or technical-support route when the game crashes, will not launch, loses required content or fails a clearly advertised function. Follow reasonable troubleshooting instructions and record the result. Do not repeatedly download or stream content if the regional policy makes that action relevant to eligibility.
Explain the practical impact: for example, “The game closes during startup on the listed operating system every time,” or “The edition description promises online co-op, but the option is absent after the latest update.” Include the version number and update date so support can determine whether the problem is known or platform-specific.
A fault-related request may be treated differently from a preference-based request, but the applicable result depends on the seller, country and transaction. Platform policies are not a complete statement of consumer law.

If the request is rejected
Read the reason before trying again
A denial may cite elapsed time, playtime, a started download, a non-refundable purchase type or an ineligible seller. Match your next action to that reason instead of submitting identical forms repeatedly.
Ask for a manual review with new facts
If the automated decision missed a material fact, reply through the official case channel and provide the order number, exact fault, version, evidence and relevant policy exception. Keep the message short and factual.

Contact the actual seller
For a third-party key, bundle or retail purchase, the platform that launches the game may have no authority to reverse the payment. Use the retailer’s refund and faulty-product process and attach the same evidence.

Consider local consumer advice
Store pages in the United States and United Kingdom expressly preserve possible rights under applicable local law, especially for faulty digital content. Those rights vary by jurisdiction and facts. If the amount or defect is significant, consult your country’s consumer-protection authority or an appropriately qualified adviser rather than assuming a platform policy settles the legal question.
Why reviews can differ from your copy
Several ordinary factors can create a mismatch without anyone making a false statement:
- Different builds: launch reviews may cover a pre-release or day-one version, while your copy includes patches, removed features or balance changes.
- Different platforms: a review on a high-end PC may not predict performance on a base console, handheld or cloud stream.
- Different hardware and settings: resolution, frame-rate mode, drivers, storage speed and accessibility settings can change the experience.
- Different scope: a review may focus on story, combat or endgame systems while your purchase decision depended on multiplayer, mod support or a particular feature.
- Different expectations: a reviewer’s praise is an opinion, not a promise that every player will enjoy the same pacing, difficulty or style.
When comparing sources, write down the review date, version, platform, hardware and the exact claim. That comparison makes your request more credible and prevents an older assessment from being presented as evidence about the current build.

- The transaction was made by the seller you are contacting.
- You know the purchase date, order number, account and store region.
- You recorded playtime and whether downloading or streaming started.
- You saved the store description, edition and relevant review details.
- You identified the installed version, platform and hardware.
- You can describe the mismatch in concrete, reproducible terms.
- You separated a subjective disappointment from a missing feature or technical fault.
- You checked the current policy and any region-specific conditions.
- You preserved screenshots, video, logs and support correspondence.
- You understand that a request may be denied and that local law may provide separate remedies.
Submit promptly, keep the explanation accurate and let the seller decide under the policy that applies to your transaction. The strongest case is not the angriest one; it is the one that connects a documented purchase, a specific representation and a verifiable difference in the version you received.
