How round-based Zombies works
Zombies arrive in rounds, putting survival at the center of each match. Players must decide when to fight or evade, where to explore, and which purchases or upgrades will help them handle the next wave. Treyarch’s official Terminus overview describes matches as a mix of fighting waves of undead, exploring, and completing objectives. A match supports up to four players: you and as many as three additional teammates.
The map’s routes and systems make resource decisions part of that loop. Killing zombies earns Essence, which can be spent to open routes, buy perks, upgrade weapons, refill ammunition, and access other map systems. Salvage drops from enemies and supports weapon rarity upgrades, Ammo Mods, and crafting tactical, lethal, and support equipment. These are distinct resources with different uses, so what you spend can shape how you prepare for later rounds.
Which Zombies maps were revealed for launch?
Activision announced two new round-based maps for launch. The reveal contrasted Terminus’s remote prison-island setting with Liberty Falls, a small West Virginia town caught in a zombie outbreak.

The map descriptions and weapon details come from the official Terminus overview and the Liberty Falls gameplay showcase. They distinguish the maps by setting and exploration, not by a supported easy-to-hard ranking.
Terminus: a prison island to explore
Treyarch presented Terminus as a large island prison environment with routes to open, objectives to complete, and a main quest. Its remote location and surrounding ocean give the map a different sense of place from the town setting of Liberty Falls.

Liberty Falls: an outbreak in West Virginia
Liberty Falls takes place in a small town transformed by a dimensional breach and zombie outbreak. The August 28, 2024 showcase at Call of Duty: NEXT also highlighted its Perks, Augments, GobbleGums, and Wonder Weapons.
What customization and weapons did the reveal highlight?
The Liberty Falls showcase described several ways to prepare and adapt. Augments can be researched between matches and applied to Perks, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades. GobbleGums are selected in a pre-match pack and obtained from machines during play; the reveal specified four GobbleGum machines in Liberty Falls.

The Ray Gun was presented as a returning Wonder Weapon. Liberty Falls also has the map-specific Thrustodyne Model 23, while Terminus features the Beamsmasher. The official showcase described the Thrustodyne’s rotor speed as more than 40,000 RPM; that is a game-design detail, not a real-world performance benchmark. These are reveal-era descriptions, not a complete account of later balance changes.

The official Activision Black Ops 6 page identifies October 25, 2024 as the release date and lists PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Microsoft PC Store, Steam, Battle.net, and Game Pass among supported platforms. It described the return of Round-Based Zombies and two new maps at launch. The Liberty Falls reveal was published August 28, 2024.

Treyarch’s Zombies team characterized its aim as “the finest, most rewarding Round-Based experience Treyarch has ever made.” That is the studio’s stated goal, not an independent assessment of the finished mode.
