Because project recipes, trader inventories and loot tables can change, treat the live project and crafting screens as the final authority before spending your stock.
What Sheet Metal does
Sheet Metal is not a weapon component, armor upgrade or quest item in the current item listing. It is a general construction resource for your Outpost. The item reference classifies it as a basic material and describes it as common, so finding a few pieces is not unusual; the challenge is having enough available when a project is ready to build.

The most important confirmed quantity is five pieces for Outpost Stage 2. That figure belongs to the project recipe, not to a universal crafting rule. Other projects may ask for a different amount, and an update can alter an existing requirement. Keep the number attached to Outpost Stage 2 rather than assuming every Outpost object costs five.

Outpost Stage 2: the first amount to reserve

When the project is visible in your Outpost menu, read the entire requirement list rather than relying on an old checklist. A displayed count is more useful than a remembered recipe because the game can rebalance construction costs between updates. If you have exactly five, avoid using them for an unrelated field recipe until Stage 2 is complete or the live interface shows that the requirement has changed.
Sheltered Retreat and the Ruined Homestead progression
Sheet Metal also appears in the material list for Sheltered Retreat. The current guide that documents this project places it after the step of photographing the Ruined Homestead. That positioning tells you when the project becomes relevant in the guide’s progression, but it does not provide a Sheet Metal quantity in the published information. Open the project itself to see the exact amount for your current version.

This distinction matters when planning a run. You can know that Sheet Metal will be useful for Sheltered Retreat without knowing how many pieces to bank from the guide alone. Keep a buffer beyond the five-piece Stage 2 reserve if Sheltered Retreat is your next objective, then adjust the buffer once the project panel reveals its actual cost. Do not convert the guide’s progression order into a guaranteed spawn, quest or unlock rule; it is a placement in that guide’s sequence.

A practical scavenging plan
- Check your project reserve first. Look at the Outpost project panel and note how many pieces you still need. Keep that amount mentally or in a run checklist before leaving the Outpost.
- Inspect Celeste’s current stock. If Sheet Metal is available, compare the amount offered with your project shortfall. Trader stock is live data, so record what you actually see rather than relying on an older list.
- Favor technological and industrial areas. When choosing between otherwise similar destinations, use the guide’s higher-probability categories as your tie-breaker. They improve your odds but do not guarantee a find.
- Scavenge broadly within the area. Search the containers and locations available to you instead of abandoning a run because one expected spot is empty. The material may occur elsewhere.
- Recheck your stock before extracting or spending. Once your reserve is met, stop risking it on optional crafting until you have confirmed the next project cost.
How to verify the live requirement in game
Embark’s field-crafting help describes a built-in way to check recipes without trusting an external list. The crafting interface shows available recipes and includes filters for items that can be built with the materials you currently hold. Use that interface whenever an update, a new project or an apparent discrepancy makes an old requirement questionable.
- Open the game’s Field Crafting interface.
- Browse the available recipes and apply the material-availability filter described in Embark’s help if you want to limit the list to things your inventory can currently support.
- Open the relevant project or recipe details and read the displayed Sheet Metal count alongside the other requirements.
- Compare that live count with your reserve before committing the material to another build.
- If you are considering disposal, open the item’s details and inspect whether the current interface offers a Recycle action and what result it promises. The generic help explains where that action can be chosen, but the item reference does not list a Sheet Metal recycling or salvaging route; never assume that a visible menu action produces a useful return until the confirmation screen tells you what happens.
This process resolves two common sources of confusion: a guide may omit a quantity, and a community listing may lag behind a patch. The project screen answers the first question for your edition, while the item-details confirmation protects you from discarding a resource that you still need.

Inventory management and the 50-item stack
The community item page reports a maximum stack size of 50 Sheet Metal. That is enough to hold the documented five-piece Stage 2 requirement in one stack, with room for additional construction, but it is not a promise that every version or inventory rule will remain identical. Treat 50 as the current reference value and look at the stack counter in your own inventory.

Use the stack limit as a planning aid rather than a reason to hoard indefinitely. If a project is active, keep the required amount plus a sensible buffer. If no project is near completion, you can continue scavenging for future construction, but avoid filling limited storage with material you cannot yet assign to a live requirement. The absence of a currently listed quest means there is no documented quest deadline forcing you to spend Sheet Metal now; that status can change with a content update.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Spending the first five pieces. Five is the documented Outpost Stage 2 requirement, so using that exact amount elsewhere can delay construction.
- Assuming Sheltered Retreat costs five. The guide confirms Sheet Metal is used for the project but does not state its quantity. Read the live project panel.
- Treating industrial or technological areas as guaranteed. They are described as more likely sources, not exclusive spawn locations.
- Assuming “common” means unlimited. A common classification describes relative availability; it does not guarantee a piece in every container or trader rotation.
- Trusting an old quest list. The current item reference lists no Sheet Metal quests, but quest requirements are update-sensitive.
- Recycling without checking the result. Embark documents a general recycle control in item details, while the item-specific listing reports no recycling or salvaging route. Confirm the exact outcome before accepting.
- Following a fixed map route from memory. The available guidance supports area categories, not a guaranteed room or coordinate.
What can change after an update
Three parts of the answer are especially volatile: project recipes, Celeste’s stock and the distribution of scavenged materials. A patch can add a new Sheet Metal use, alter the five-piece Stage 2 requirement, change the Sheltered Retreat list or make a previous source less productive. The report of no current quests is also a snapshot, not a permanent rule.
After a substantial update, re-open each relevant project, inspect Celeste and check the Field Crafting filters before selling, recycling or committing a large stack. If an external guide and your interface disagree, use the interface for the decision you are making in that session. Keep the date attached to older notes so you know when to revalidate them.
Bottom line for your next run
Sheet Metal is primarily an Outpost-building resource. Protect 5× Sheet Metal for Outpost Stage 2, gather extra if Sheltered Retreat is approaching, and use Celeste or scavenging in technological and industrial areas to build your reserve. Because the Sheltered Retreat quantity, trader stock and loot probabilities are not fixed by the available documentation, verify every live requirement in the game before you spend, sell or recycle the material.
