What Should Every Gaming Setup Have? A Practical Checklist for Every Player

Start with your platform, game, space and budget. Then check screen placement, input reach, chair fit, lighting and connection before buying optional gaming accessories.

A good gaming setup starts with the device and game you actually play, then fits your space, comfort and budget. A PC player may want a keyboard and mouse; a console or handheld player may not. Use this checklist to get the essentials in place before deciding whether any extra gear is worth buying.

What should every gaming setup have?

Every setup needs a working gaming device, the controls required by the game, a display or screen you can view comfortably, and a place to play that lets you reach your controls without strain. Online play also calls for a usable internet connection. The exact accessories depend on platform and preference—not on a universal list of products labelled “gaming.”

HP’s manufacturer guide identifies a keyboard, gaming mouse, headset and mousepad as common PC peripherals, and also discusses items such as a chair, desk, monitor, cable management and lighting. That is a useful category list, not a requirement for every player or platform. HP’s guide to gaming accessories also includes recommendations for its own product family.

Before you play: setup checklist

  1. Confirm the platform and controls. Check that the game, console or PC is ready and that each accessory connects to the intended device. On PC, decide whether the game and your preference call for keyboard and mouse or a controller. Console and handheld players should start with their own control needs rather than assume a PC peripheral list applies.
  2. Place the screen where you can view it comfortably. Keep your primary display in front of you so you do not need to turn your neck repeatedly to see it. Intel’s setup guide suggests using roughly an arm’s-length viewing distance and placing the screen so its upper third is near eye level. Treat these as starting points to adjust for your vision, screen size and posture, not fixed measurements for everyone. Intel’s gaming desk setup guide quotes Dr. Schwartz on keeping the primary monitor directly in front of the player.
  3. Arrange controls within easy reach. Put frequently used items close enough that you do not have to reach or twist repeatedly. OSHA’s computer-workstation checklist recommends a stable input surface, keeping the pointing device close to the body’s midline and keyboard, and positioning elbows at about 90 to 100 degrees as a workstation guideline. Adjust the setup to your body and the way you play. OSHA’s workstation evaluation checklist provides further positioning guidance.
  4. Check chair fit and posture. Choose a seat that suits your size and lets you sit comfortably with the controls in reach. Adjustability, arm support and lumbar support may be useful features; a racing-style gaming chair is not a requirement. Intel notes that an office chair can also be an option.
  5. Check connection and lighting. For online play, make sure your connection is available and stable enough for your situation. Arrange lighting to reduce uncomfortable glare on the screen; HP lists adequate, glare-free lighting as a setup consideration.
  6. Keep the play area clear. Route cables so they do not obstruct movement. Cable ties, sleeves or a box can help organize them, but they are optional accessories.

What accessories does every gamer need?

There is no single accessory bundle that suits every gamer. Choose based on platform compatibility, the controls you prefer, the game’s demands, fit, available room and budget. “Gaming” branding alone does not establish that a product will be more comfortable or useful for you.

Accessory When it may be useful What to check
Keyboard and mouse For PC players who prefer these controls and games that support them. Device compatibility, size, key layout and whether the mouse is comfortable to use.
Controller For console play, handheld use, or PC games and players that suit a controller. Platform compatibility, connection method and comfortable reach to the controls.
Headset or other audio When you want private audio or need to communicate with other players. Compatibility, fit and whether the game or your play environment makes it useful.
Mousepad or other mouse surface For mouse users whose desk surface does not work well for their preferred movement. Available desk area, preferred movement and surface feel.
Chair and desk When your current seat or work surface does not fit your body, controls or play area. Footprint, adjustability, support and whether the desk leaves enough room for your inputs.

Features such as mechanical switches, higher mouse DPI, surround sound or RGB lighting are matters of preference and use case; the sources cited here do not establish that they automatically improve play. If you are comparing products, prioritize a comfortable fit and confirmed compatibility over a feature list.

Optional upgrades: buy only to solve a real setup problem

  • Monitor arm: Consider one if you need more desk space or want more flexibility in display placement.
  • Second display: Useful for some workflows, such as keeping a stream or other window visible, but not needed for gaming itself.
  • Wrist rest: An option if it suits your typing or pointing setup; first make sure the keyboard and mouse are positioned comfortably.
  • Desk upgrade: Consider a different footprint or layout if your current surface cannot fit the controls you use or leaves them out of easy reach.
  • Cable organizers or decorative lighting: Add them for organization or personal style if desired, not because every setup requires them.

Intel’s guide emphasizes that desk space, comfort, construction and personal preference affect the right arrangement; there is no single correct gaming-station layout. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it solves the problem you noticed.

Build pauses and movement into long sessions

A setup checklist should include how you use the setup, not just what you buy. OSHA’s workstation guidance recommends opportunities for micro-breaks or recovery pauses and avoiding prolonged sitting or standing. Change posture and move around during longer sessions where practical; this is general workstation guidance, not a promise that a particular habit or product prevents injury.

Cleveland Clinic Esports Medicine’s Gamer’s Health Guide recommends: “Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away.” Treat that as the guide’s practical pause suggestion, not individualized medical advice or a guarantee.
