Sober is VinegarHQ’s experimental, unofficial app for running Roblox Player on Linux. Rather than running the Windows client through Wine, Sober uses what its developers call a specialized runtime for the Android version of Roblox, bridging Android and Linux. The project does not publicly document enough implementation detail to describe its internals more precisely.

What Sober does—and what it does not

Sober is a Linux application intended to run Roblox Player. VinegarHQ describes it as an unofficial port that adapts the Android version of Roblox for Linux. It is not Wine, a conventional Android emulator, or a virtual machine, according to the project’s homepage and FAQ.

That description explains the approach at a high level, but not its low-level architecture. The developers’ FAQ puts it this way: “Sober crafts a specialized runtime for the Android version of Roblox.” The project does not publish enough detail to support more specific claims about how that runtime is implemented.

Sober is for Roblox Player, not Roblox Studio. For Studio, VinegarHQ directs users to Vinegar, a separate tool.

What a Linux PC needs to run Sober

The requirements documented on the Sober installation page are:

  • Linux kernel 5.11 or newer.
  • An x86-64/AMD64 processor. ARM processors are unsupported in the documented release.
  • Graphics capable of OpenGL ES 3.0, the listed minimum.
  • SSE4.2 and Vulkan 1.1 are recommended for a smoother experience.

The Roblox x86-64 APK requires SSE4.2. Sober’s documentation says it can emulate SSE4.2 on processors that support only SSE4.1, but performance will not be optimal. Flathub also lists the Sober package architecture as x86_64; check the current listing and your system’s specifications before installing.

How to install Sober

The documented installation route is through Flatpak and Flathub. If Flatpak is not already set up on your Linux distribution, install it using the instructions for that distribution, then install Sober from Flathub.

  1. Open the Sober Flathub listing and install the app, package ID org.vinegarhq.Sober.
  2. Launch Sober. On first run, it prompts you to install Roblox.
  3. Use the automatic installation option, selected by default, unless you have a reason to install manually.

For manual installation, Sober asks for an APK application bundle. Use a source you trust. If the APK was provided as separate files, the installation documentation says to select both the base APK and the x86_64 split APK.

Is Sober official, safe from blocking, or dependable?

Sober is not affiliated with or supported by Roblox. VinegarHQ calls it experimental and closed source, warns that bugs or instability are possible, and says the project could be discontinued. Its FAQ also says Roblox may prevent Sober clients from using its services at any time. Compatibility is therefore not guaranteed.

The official pages do not establish what account-moderation outcomes, if any, a particular user may face. They do not support a promise that using Sober will—or will not—lead to moderation. If you need a Roblox setup with official support or assured compatibility, Sober’s own status and warnings are important limitations.

Version and update notes

When Flathub was checked on October 5, 2026, its listing showed Sober version 1.8.0 and Roblox build 2.741.1061. The release notes described fixes for long-standing performance issues and freezes, a rendering bug affecting Nullscape and other titles on some GPUs, and some Vulkan crashes. These are time-sensitive listing details, not a guarantee that every system or game will behave the same way. Check the Flathub page for the current version and release notes.
