The September 2022 Grand Theft Auto VI leak exposed about 90 videos—roughly 50 minutes—of early development footage, according to contemporaneous reporting. Rockstar confirmed an intrusion and unauthorized access to confidential information, including that footage. The clips document work in progress, not the finished game.
What happened in the GTA 6 leak?
On September 18, 2022, an account using the name “teapotuberhacker” posted about 90 videos to GTAForums. The Guardian reported that the clips totalled about 50 minutes. They showed an in-development version of Grand Theft Auto VI, with material ranging from animation tests to more developed scenes, as well as unfinished visuals and technical or debug information. The Guardian’s report covered the posts and the footage.
On September 19, Rockstar confirmed that it had suffered a network intrusion. The company said an unauthorized third party accessed and downloaded confidential information, including early development footage. Rockstar also said it did not anticipate disruption to its live services or a long-term effect on ongoing development. That was the company’s assessment at the time, not an independently established account of every consequence. Rockstar’s statement and contemporaneous BBC coverage reported the response.
How many GTA 6 videos leaked?
The Guardian described about 90 videos totalling about 50 minutes. Those are rounded figures from contemporaneous reporting, not a count or duration published by Rockstar. The posts contained clips at different stages of development rather than a polished, continuous gameplay presentation.

Was the leaked GTA 6 footage real—and did it show the finished game?
Rockstar’s confirmation that early development footage had been accessed supports treating the material as footage from the game’s development. It does not make the clips a reliable preview of the final release. Contemporary reports described work-in-progress scenes, unfinished presentation and debug information; some details appeared consistent with prior reporting about Vice City and playable characters. Those observations describe what appeared in the leaked material, not a definitive specification of the released game. Eurogamer’s coverage likewise characterized the footage as early development material.
In practical terms, the videos can show that particular scenes, assets or systems were being worked on at that point in development. They cannot establish that any specific visual, mechanic, character detail or location would remain unchanged in the finished game.

Was GTA V or GTA 6 source code stolen?
The leaker claimed to have source code for both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto VI and sought to negotiate with Rockstar. Rockstar’s public statement confirmed unauthorized access to confidential information, but it did not confirm the specific source-code claim. The claim should therefore remain attributed to the leaker, not presented as a confirmed part of Rockstar’s statement. The BBC’s account reported the claim alongside Rockstar’s confirmation.
Are the 2022 and 2026 GTA 6 leaks the same?
No. The September 2022 intrusion and later reports of gameplay and map material in August 2026 are separate events. A Tom’s Hardware report published August 26, 2026 covered the later leak and reproduced a separate Rockstar statement calling those videos heartbreaking for the team. That statement concerned the 2026 coverage; it should not be read as a comment on the 2022 incident. The available later reporting is secondary coverage and does not authenticate every clip or claim circulating in connection with that separate event.

What is known about GTA 6’s release date?
Tom’s Hardware reported on August 26, 2026, that Rockstar’s planned release date was November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Release plans can change, so consult Rockstar’s official GTA VI page for current information. The 2022 footage itself is not evidence that Rockstar attributed any later development change or delay to that breach.
