Messmer the Impaler is a key boss in the expansion and the figure whose flame is linked to the Land of Shadow’s violent past. The released game’s item lore identifies him as a son of Queen Marika and says a sealed serpent within him threatened to take control. The trailer establishes his destructive role; the family and serpent details come from the game’s later lore.
What does the trailer reveal about Messmer?
Bandai Namco’s official expansion prologue describes the Land of Shadow as a place obscured by the Erdtree, “Where the goddess Marika first set foot.” It says the land was “purged in an unsung battle” and “Set ablaze by Messmer’s flame.” This establishes Messmer as central to the place’s history and associates him with its destruction.
The wording leaves important questions unanswered. “Purged in an unsung battle” suggests a history omitted from public memory, but does not identify every victim, explain the motive, or establish the precise chronology. The trailer premise also does not say whether Messmer acted willingly or why Marika might have sent him.
Who is Messmer in the released game?
Bandai Namco describes Messmer as one of Shadow of the Erdtree’s key boss characters. Beyond that official characterization, the released game’s item descriptions provide the lineage and curse details. The community reference Eldenpedia’s Messmer the Impaler entry summarizes those descriptions: Messmer is a son of Queen Marika, bore a vision of fire, and had a younger sister who also bore one.
The same summary says a serpent within Messmer threatened to subsume him. Marika sealed that influence by replacing one of his eyes with a seal of grace. This gives the serpent imagery a personal lore connection rather than making it merely a visual motif. The cited material does not establish the identity of Messmer’s other parent, so claims assigning him a particular father go beyond what is supported here.
How does Messmer fit the Land of Shadow’s story?
Official materials connect the region to Marika’s sacred history. Bandai Namco says it was where she first set foot; FromSoftware’s announcement calls it “The land where Marika became God-Queen and where the Erdtree was born.” The Land of Shadow is therefore not simply a distant battlefield: it is tied to the origins of Marika’s rule and the Erdtree.
Rank #2
The official premise places Messmer’s flame against that history, while leaving the full account of the purge unstated. It also introduces a separate mystery: Miquella has departed for the Land of Shadow after divesting himself of his flesh, strength, lineage, and “all things Golden,” and awaits “the return of his promised Lord.” FromSoftware frames the expansion as a story set in a new land and not told in the Lands Between. The trailer’s setup does not fully explain why Miquella went there or how his purpose relates to Messmer.

- Messmer’s established role: The official prologue associates his flame with the Land of Shadow’s purge, and the publisher identifies him as a key boss.
- What the game later adds: Item lore, as summarized by Eldenpedia, identifies him as Marika’s son and describes the serpent sealed within him.
- What remains open: The trailer alone does not explain the purge’s motive, Messmer’s agency, the complete chronology, or Miquella’s reason for traveling there.
Together, these details make Messmer both a figure bound to Marika’s history and the agent associated with a hidden campaign of destruction. His fire is the trailer’s clearest clue; the released game’s serpent lore adds a personal dimension to his monstrous appearance.
