“Xbox 720” was the name used in an alleged Microsoft planning presentation for a next-generation console; it was not the name of the system Microsoft ultimately released. Reported as a circa-2010 document that surfaced online in June 2012, the presentation outlined a $299 target, a Kinect bundle and a broader living-room entertainment hub. Those were reported ambitions, not confirmed Xbox One specifications.
What was the Xbox 720 presentation leak?
In June 2012, a 56-page presentation described in contemporary coverage as dating from 2010 appeared online. The Guardian cautioned that it might have been an internal proposal or messaging exercise rather than an approved roadmap, and said Microsoft did not comment on rumor or speculation. In 2024, Windows Central reported that its sources had verified the documents’ authenticity. That supports the provenance as reported, but does not establish that every slide reflected a settled company decision.

The document used “Xbox 720” for a future system. The console that launched in 2013 was called Xbox One. The leaked name therefore belongs to an early planning document, not the retail product name.

What did the slides reportedly envision?
A console for the whole living room
The presentation reportedly pitched the system as more than a games machine: it would bring together games, TV, DVD and Blu-ray playback, music and video streaming, and interaction with phones and tablets. The Guardian reported that Apple, Google and OnLive were named as competitors in connected living-room entertainment. That was the document’s reported strategic framing, not proof of Microsoft’s final corporate strategy.
Windows Central reproduced the slide phrase “the ONLY box you need for premium living room entertainment.” It captures the ambition in the presentation; it was not attributed to a named Microsoft executive.

- Xbox One, 500GB HDD, 8GB RAM, HDMI, Blu-ray, Wireless Controller, Chat Headset
Proposed hardware and features
- Processor: a proposed six-to-eight-core ARM or x86 approach, alongside a reported claim of markedly higher performance than Xbox 360. These were roadmap claims, not confirmed specifications for the retail Xbox One.
- Disc and display ambitions: Blu-ray playback and native 3D were among the reported plans.
- Kinect: the slides reportedly proposed a second-generation Kinect with improved voice and tracking, bundled with the console.
- DVR: a digital video recorder concept was also reported.
- Companion devices: the presentation described interaction across the console, phones and tablets, an ambition associated with SmartGlass.
- Augmented reality: the slides reportedly included glasses under the name Project Fortaleza. TechRadar spelled the name “Fortazella”; the project and spelling should be treated as reported details, not independently confirmed product announcements.

How did the proposed price and targets compare with the product?
| Item | What the leaked presentation reportedly proposed | What later reporting says about Xbox One |
|---|---|---|
| Console name | “Xbox 720,” an early planning name | Released as Xbox One |
| Price | $299 proposed target, attributed to the circa-2010 presentation | $499 launch MSRP in 2013, as reported by Windows Central |
| Kinect | Second-generation Kinect reportedly included in the proposed bundle | The presentation’s bundle plan is not evidence that every proposed detail carried through unchanged to retail |
| Lifetime sales ambition | 100 million units over a proposed ten-year lifecycle, as reported by Windows Central | A target in the leaked material, not an audited result or an independently confirmed Microsoft forecast |
The $299 figure was a proposed target, not the eventual Xbox One launch price. Windows Central reports a $499 MSRP at launch in 2013. The cited coverage does not establish why the figures differed, so the gap should not be assigned to a particular cause.

Windows Central reported the presentation’s 100-million-unit sales ambition and ten-year lifecycle as targets. They describe what the slides reportedly aimed for, not sales achieved or an official company forecast. The Guardian’s account also stressed the document’s age and the possibility that it was a proposal rather than a settled roadmap.

What the leak can—and cannot—tell us
The presentation is useful as a snapshot of an early pitch: a console framed as an entertainment hub, with ambitious hardware ideas, Kinect integration and companion-device features. Its reported price and sales figures show targets attributed to that plan. They do not establish the final Xbox One specification, the reasons for later product decisions, or whether the proposed commercial goals were met.
