In June 2019, Double Fine CEO Tim Schafer said that if employees wanted to discuss forming a union, “It would be the start of a conversation.” He was open to talking about unionization, but said he did not know whether it would solve problems such as crunch, employee abuse or pay differences. Those remarks were not a declaration that Double Fine was unionized, nor do they establish Schafer’s current views.
What Schafer said about a possible union
In a June 21, 2019 Q&A with Game Developer, Schafer was asked how he would respond if Double Fine employees proposed unionizing. He said, “It would be the start of a conversation.”

He added: “I’m not opposed to talking about it, I just don’t know what the answers are.” Schafer’s comments expressed willingness to discuss the subject, alongside uncertainty about whether unionization was the right solution. He specifically raised questions about whether it would address employee abuse, crunch or differences in pay.
What happened at the 2019 Game Developers Choice Awards
The interview followed a staged unionization joke Schafer performed at the March 2019 Game Developers Choice Awards. As described by the Springfield & Central Illinois Trades & Labor Council, the bit involved the stage lighting and teleprompter; the lighting crew were identified as members of IATSE. During the gag, Schafer said, “I’m not anti-union, but I don’t really think we need them, right?” After the lights went out, he said, “This is a union show. We’re better for it.”

- Easy to learn, quick to play, and fun for the whole family!
- Read a card aloud and quickly write down two answers you think someone else will also write - get a match and it's a ditto!
- Includes 400 category cards
- Play with as few as four friends, or have a big party and everyone can play!
- For 4 or more players, ages 10 and up
The setting matters: these lines were part of a performance, not a formal statement of workplace policy. The council’s account presents the joke in the context of the union labor supporting the event. Kotaku’s March 21, 2019 feature also discussed the awards bit, alongside other topics about Double Fine.
Did Schafer support unionizing Double Fine?
His 2019 answer was more qualified than either a clear endorsement or outright opposition. He said he was willing to talk if employees raised the possibility, while questioning whether a union would resolve particular workplace problems. The interview does not establish that employees made such a proposal at the time, that a union was formed, or that Schafer adopted a final position.

Is Double Fine unionized now?
The available dated interview and awards coverage do not establish Double Fine’s present union status. A May 9, 2026 report by XP Gained says employees filed a union petition, but that secondary report has not been corroborated here by an official labor filing or a union statement, and its outcome is not established. It would therefore be premature to treat the 2019 comments—or that unverified report—as confirmation of the studio’s current status.
