Start with the event’s rules, not a generic checklist
Before packing, open the official event page and the venue’s current visitor guidance. Check again close to showtime, because event instructions can differ from a venue’s general policy and may be updated. NJ TRANSIT’s PNC Bank Arts Center guidance specifically tells visitors to consult show-specific information and the event page. It also says, “Your phone is your ticket — do not plan to print.” That is useful guidance for that venue, not proof that every concert uses mobile-only entry.

Look for the event’s entry requirements, bag dimensions and material rules, prohibited-items list, payment information, weather guidance, and directions for medical or accessibility-related needs. If the event page and general venue page appear to differ, follow the current event-specific instructions or contact the venue to clarify before you travel.
Use this quick decision order
- Confirm entry: Find out whether your ticket is mobile, whether photo ID is required, and whether the ticket holder’s name or another detail must match.
- Check the bag rule: Note the maximum size, whether the bag must be clear, which styles are accepted, and any stated medical or diaper-bag exception.
- Check payment: Find out which payment methods the venue accepts, including whether the event is cash-free.
- Review restricted items: Check the rules for food, drinks, bottles, umbrellas, chairs, recording equipment, and other items you may be considering.
- Account for personal needs and conditions: Ask about medication, medical food or drink, required equipment, weather, and hearing protection.
The essentials to have ready
Ticket and phone
If entry uses a mobile ticket, open it before leaving and make sure you can reach it on the device you plan to bring. Follow the event’s stated ticket instructions rather than assuming a screenshot, wallet pass, printed copy, or another format will be accepted. PNC Bank Arts Center’s current visitor guidance says not to plan to print because the phone is the ticket; other venues may set different requirements.

Consider how you will access the ticket if your phone is difficult to use during the trip. If the venue provides an official option for adding a ticket to a digital wallet or saving it for offline access, follow its instructions. Do not rely on an option the event page does not confirm. Charge your phone before setting out, since you may need it for entry as well as practical trip details.
Photo ID, if required
Bring the form of photo identification specified by the event when ID is required. Do not assume that every concert checks ID at entry or that every type of identification is interchangeable. Check the event instructions, especially if the ticket or another requirement is tied to a named attendee.
Accepted payment
Bring a payment method the venue accepts. Some venues are cash-free, so carrying cash alone may not work there; conversely, do not assume a particular card, mobile wallet, or cash option is accepted without checking. The venue’s payment information is more useful than a general assumption about concert concessions or merchandise.

Essential medication
Pack medication you need, but check the event’s instructions for required packaging and any rules for medical devices. If you need to bring medical food, drink, equipment, or another item that may otherwise be restricted, contact the venue in advance and ask how to use its exception process. Carrying a medical need does not automatically tell you what documentation, packaging, or approval that venue requires.
Choose a bag that meets the exact policy
Bag rules vary enough that “concert-sized” is not a reliable measurement. Compare your bag with the event’s maximum dimensions, transparency requirement, permitted styles, and any stated exceptions. Use the smallest bag that holds your necessary items and complies with every part of the rule.

These examples show why a bag that worked at one show may not qualify at the next. Measure the bag as the venue describes its dimensions, and check both size and construction: meeting a size limit does not make a non-clear bag acceptable where transparent material is required. Also look for whether the policy permits a clutch, limits the number of bags, or describes medical and diaper-bag exceptions. If the page does not explain how an exception works, ask before arriving.

What to put in the bag
After confirming the rules, pack only what you expect to need and can bring under the policy. A compact setup might include your phone, required ID, accepted payment, essential medication, and an allowed weather item. Keep medication in the packaging the venue requires. Avoid filling a compliant bag with items that the event prohibits; bag approval does not override restrictions on what may go inside.
Weather and comfort items: check permission first
For an outdoor concert, use the forecast and the venue’s weather instructions to decide whether a permitted layer or rain item is useful. A poncho is listed as permitted by Ameris Bank Amphitheatre, but that does not establish that ponchos—or any other weather gear—are allowed everywhere. Check the event’s list before packing an umbrella, chair, blanket, or bottle, even if it seems small or convenient.
PNC Bank Arts Center advises that shows generally proceed in rain unless conditions are extreme and notes that show-day updates may be issued. For that venue, check for updates before setting out and do not treat a rain forecast by itself as confirmation that the event is canceled. Other events may give different weather instructions.

Questions to answer before adding an item
- Poncho or rain layer: Is it listed as allowed, and does it fit within any bag limit?
- Umbrella: Does the event permit it, or is it on the restricted-items list?
- Bottle or drink: Are filled bottles, empty refillable bottles, or drinks allowed? Do not assume the answer is the same for each.
- Chair or blanket: Does the event allow either, and are there conditions on type or size?
- Sunscreen: Does the event specify whether particular formats or containers are permitted?
Only the event’s own instructions can settle these questions. If a useful item is not clearly addressed, ask the venue rather than relying on a rule from another concert.

Plan medical items separately from optional comfort items. First, identify what you need during the event: medication, a device, food, drink, or another item. Then check the event’s medical-access guidance for packaging requirements, exceptions, and how to request approval. The venue-specific guidance cited here supports contacting the venue in advance when a medical reason requires food, drink, or equipment that may otherwise be restricted.

- Read the event’s medical and accessibility information, not just the general prohibited-items list.
- Contact the venue ahead of time if the item is not clearly permitted or appears restricted.
- Ask what packaging, documentation, or advance arrangement is required; do not assume an exception is automatic.
- Pack the item as instructed and keep it accessible for any required check.
If the published guidance does not answer your question, request clarification from the venue before travel. A policy example from another venue cannot confirm what an event will allow.

Protect hearing, especially for children
Consider hearing protection for a loud concert, particularly when attending with children. Ameris Bank Amphitheatre recommends ear protection for young children, and Edinburgh Summer Sessions warns that prolonged exposure to loud noise may damage hearing. The guidance supports considering protection, but it does not establish one product, fit, or specification as right for every attendee.
Choose protection appropriate to the wearer, including child sizing where relevant, and check that you are comfortable using it. If you are bringing it in a case or pouch, include that in your bag-size calculation and verify that the item is allowed under the event’s rules.
Leave these items out unless the event explicitly allows them
Use the restricted-items list as the final check before closing your bag. The venue examples identify rules that can apply to oversized bags, glass, weapons or sharp items, recording equipment, food and drinks, and other prohibited items. Restrictions vary, so this is a prompt to check the event list—not a complete list for every show.

- Recording equipment where the event restricts it.
- Food, drinks, bottles, umbrellas, chairs, or other items not confirmed as permitted.
- Any item the current event instructions expressly prohibit.
Do not infer permission from the fact that an item is small, common, or allowed at another venue. If an item is essential and the rules appear to exclude it, use the venue’s advance contact or exception process rather than bringing it without clarification.
A final packing and departure checklist
Use this once you have checked the current event page and venue policy:
- Mobile ticket accessible in the format the event specifies.
- Required photo ID.
- A payment method the venue accepts.
- Essential medication in the packaging the venue requires.
- Medical food, drink, or equipment cleared through the venue’s process when needed.
- A bag that meets the stated size, transparency, style, and quantity rules.
- Only weather and comfort items explicitly permitted for that event.
- Hearing protection suited to the wearer, especially for children.
- No restricted item packed by assumption.
Before leaving, check the official event page again for show-day notices, particularly for an outdoor event where weather updates may affect plans. This last check is also a chance to catch a changed entry instruction before it becomes a problem on arrival.
