For most first-time players, buy a Starter Kit if you are learning with one other person. Choose a ready-to-play Commander deck instead when your friends already play Commander. Buy Play Boosters for drafting or opening packs for fun—not as the most reliable way to obtain a playable first deck.
Choose by how you will play your first game
Your first purchase should match the people, format, and teaching situation you already have. Magic: The Gathering products are not interchangeable: a preconstructed deck is assembled to function immediately, while a booster is a randomized packet of cards intended for collecting, limited play, or customization.

| Product | Best first use | What you get | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter Kit | Two people learning together | Typically two introductory decks and teaching-friendly accessories; the documented FINAL FANTASY version has two ready-to-play 60-card decks, tokens, and two deck boxes. | Contents, theme, and digital-code availability vary by release. Check the exact box. |
| Ready-to-play Commander deck | Joining an established Commander group | A complete 100-card multiplayer deck in products such as Foundations Commander, with tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. | It assumes your group actually plays Commander; the larger format can be harder to learn alone. |
| Foundations Beginner Box | Guided lessons with another learner | Ten predetermined beginner-oriented packs, how-to-play guides, playmats, reference cards, and life counters. | Verify language availability and the current selling price. |
| Jumpstart | Fast casual games with minimal deck building | Two themed Jumpstart Boosters can be shuffled together. A Foundations Jumpstart Booster has 20 themed cards, including lands. | Do not substitute ordinary Play Boosters; they are a different product. |
| Play Booster | Drafting or opening cards for enjoyment | A variable card pack; a Foundations Play Booster contains 14 cards. | It is not a complete constructed deck. |
| Starter Collection | Expanding your card pool after you understand the basics | Hundreds of cards, lands, three Play Boosters, and a deck-building booklet. | It is a collection-building purchase rather than the quickest route to a first game, and Wizards lists it as English-only. |
What should I buy for my first Magic deck?
Pick a Starter Kit for a two-person first game
A Starter Kit is the clearest starting point when you and a friend are both new. Wizards’ product guide categorizes Starter Kits under “Learning how to play” and describes them as containing what you need to play and teach Magic. Because the decks are already constructed, you can open the box, read the introductory material, shuffle, and begin without understanding deck construction or card collecting first.

Some versions may include a digital code, and the cited Arena codes are available only in select regions, so inspect the regional product listing before purchasing.

- KICK OFF YOUR COLLECTION—Start your collection with Rare cards and shiny foils; each deck includes 5 Rare cards and 1 Mythic Rare Legendary Creature card with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment
Choose a Commander deck when your friends already play Commander
Commander is a multiplayer format, and Wizards positions Commander decks for “Epic multiplayer games.” If your regular group already plays it, a ready-to-play Commander deck lets you sit down with the same rules and deck size as everyone else. Foundations Commander decks contain 100 cards, tokens, a reference card, and a deck box.
Do not buy a Commander deck merely because it has more cards. Commander uses a singleton construction rule (apart from basic lands), a legendary commander, and multiplayer conventions that are different from a typical 60-card beginner game. Ask your group which power level, themes, and house rules they use. A deck that fits the group matters more than choosing the newest character or artwork.

Use the Beginner Box for structured lessons
The Foundations Beginner Box is designed for people who want more guidance than a normal Starter Kit provides. It includes ten predetermined beginner-oriented packs, how-to-play guides, playmats, reference cards, and life counters. You shuffle two packs together for a game, then can try different combinations as your confidence grows. This makes it useful for a parent and child, a classroom-style session, or two adults who want explicit instructions rather than learning from a local group.

Jumpstart is a shuffle-and-play system: combine two themed Jumpstart Boosters and play. Foundations Jumpstart Boosters contain 20 themed cards including lands, so the product supplies the mana needed for its intended experience. It is a good middle ground when you want variety and quick setup but do not want to build a conventional deck immediately. Confirm that the package is a Jumpstart product; a Play Booster does not work the same way.

Why booster packs are usually a poor first purchase
A Play Booster contains randomized cards. Wizards describes it as suitable for drafting or opening for fun; a Foundations Play Booster has 14 cards. Randomization is part of the appeal, but it means one pack is unlikely to provide the lands, creatures, removal, and consistent strategy required for a functioning deck.
Buy Play Boosters when you have a specific plan:
- Draft: several players open packs and build decks from those cards during the event.
- Casual opening: you enjoy discovering cards and are comfortable adding them to a deck later.
- Upgrading: you already own a playable deck and want optional additions.
If your goal is “open a box and play immediately,” choose a Starter Kit, Beginner Box, Jumpstart product, or ready-to-play Commander deck instead. No booster guarantees a complete deck or a particular useful card.

Published US prices and what they mean
Wizards announced a return to listing manufacturer suggested retail prices for most sealed products beginning with Foundations. The following are official US suggested prices for specific Foundations products, announced in 2024:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Product | Published US suggested price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Foundations Starter Collection | $59.99 | Wizards of the Coast suggested price, announced in 2024; not a live retailer quote. |
| Foundations Play Booster | $6.99 | Wizards of the Coast suggested price, announced in 2024; contents are variable. |
| Foundations Commander Deck | $44.99 | Wizards of the Coast suggested price, announced in 2024; actual offers can differ. |
The cited announcement does not establish one universal MSRP for every Starter Kit version. Retail prices can be higher or lower depending on seller, stock, shipping, region, and whether a particular themed release is still in print. Before paying, check the exact product name, edition, language, seller, shipping charge, and final total.

- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
How to buy and start playing
If you are buying a Starter Kit
- Confirm the box contains two decks. Read the product listing for the specific set rather than assuming every Starter Kit matches the FINAL FANTASY example.
- Check language and region. If a digital Arena code is advertised, verify that your region is eligible; select-region restrictions apply to the cited code example.
- Open both decks and keep their cards separate. Use the deck boxes or label the piles so cards do not get mixed before you know which deck they belong to.
- Read the included teaching material. Play the first game with hands open if necessary, pausing to resolve card types, combat, and timing questions.
- Play several games before changing cards. Early games teach the rules and reveal which colors or strategies you enjoy; immediate rebuilding makes it harder to identify what you actually learned.
If you are buying a Commander deck
- Ask your group whether Commander is the format. A 100-card deck is not a substitute for a group that plays ordinary 60-card games.
- Ask about expectations. Confirm preferred power level, themes, banned-card policies, and whether the group uses any house rules.
- Choose a deck with a clear commander. Read the commander card first; it explains the deck’s central colors and the type of game it is designed to create.
- Learn the extra multiplayer rules before the first event. Commander begins with a designated commander and uses a larger deck, so ask an experienced player to explain the opening procedure and commander-specific rules.
- Play it unchanged once or twice. Only then decide whether you need different cards, more copies of effects available in the format, or a lower- or higher-powered strategy.
If you are buying a Beginner Box or Jumpstart
- For the Beginner Box, follow the guides in order. Use the playmats, reference cards, and counters as intended rather than sorting all ten packs into one large pool.
- For Jumpstart, select two themed boosters. Shuffle the two 20-card packs together, add the provided lands, and play the resulting deck.
- Record combinations you enjoy. The value of these products is repeatable, low-friction play; noting favorite themes helps you decide what to buy later.
What to buy after your first few games
Build a wider collection with Starter Collection
Foundations Starter Collection is aimed at players who have learned the basics and want many options. It includes hundreds of cards, lands, three Play Boosters, and a deck-building booklet. That breadth can support several casual 60-card decks, but it also requires sorting and choosing cards, so it is less immediate than a preconstructed product. Wizards’ announcement lists the product as English-only.
Add individual cards only after identifying a plan
Once you know which colors, mechanics, or Commander strategy you like, buying specific cards is more predictable than opening random packs. Start by writing down the deck’s purpose—aggressive creatures, controlling the board, graveyard interaction, or another theme—then replace cards that did not perform in your games. This approach keeps upgrades tied to play experience instead of speculation about which unopened product might contain a useful card.
Standard legality and Foundations
Foundations cards are Standard-legal until at least 2029, with an exception for select Commander-support cards included in the Starter Collection. This matters only if you intend to play sanctioned Standard events; casual kitchen-table games and Commander do not use Standard rotation in the same way. Check the current event rules and the individual card’s legality before entering a tournament, especially when a Starter Collection card is identified as Commander support.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
- Mistake: buying one booster as a deck. Fix: buy a complete product first, then add packs for drafting or enjoyment.
- Mistake: buying Commander without a Commander group. Fix: ask the people you will play with which format they use before choosing deck size.
- Mistake: assuming every Starter Kit has the same contents. Fix: inspect the exact set listing, including decks, accessories, language, and any regional code restrictions.
- Mistake: treating MSRP as the checkout price. Fix: compare the final total from a reputable seller, including shipping and the product’s edition.
- Mistake: rebuilding immediately. Fix: play several unchanged games first, then make one or two deliberate changes at a time.
- Mistake: buying accessories you already received. Fix: check the box first; documented Starter Kit and Foundations Commander products already include deck boxes.
A simple decision rule
Use this order when you are unsure:
- Two beginners, one opponent: Starter Kit.
- Two learners who want written lessons and repeated combinations: Foundations Beginner Box.
- Existing multiplayer Commander group: ready-to-play Commander deck that matches the group.
- Quick casual games with themed variety: Jumpstart.
- Draft night or opening packs for fun: Play Boosters.
- Already comfortable and looking for breadth: Starter Collection.
The best first Magic purchase is therefore the one that gets you into a real game with the people you have available. Start with a complete, purpose-built product; treat randomized boosters and larger collections as follow-up purchases once you know which kind of Magic you want to play.
