Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA stuck Nintendo eShop download is usually caused by one of five conditions: the console is not properly online, the active Switch user is not linked to the purchasing Nintendo Account, storage is full, the download is paused because another game is using online communication, or an add-on is waiting for its base game to close. Work through those conditions in that order. Do not buy the title again, format a memory card, or guess what an error code means before checking the download stage and account that owns the purchase.
First identify exactly where the failure occurs
The right fix depends on whether the problem is the shop, the download queue, storage, installation, or entitlement. Look at the HOME Menu and eShop before changing anything, and write down any error code exactly as displayed, including punctuation and capitalization.

The eShop will not open
Treat this as an internet or account-access problem rather than a failed game download. Confirm that the Switch has internet access and that the user opening the eShop is a Switch user linked to a Nintendo Account. Nintendo lists both an internet connection and a linked Nintendo Account as requirements for eShop use.

Check whether the download was actually started and whether the item was purchased by the Nintendo Account currently in use. A title bought by another account on the console may not appear in the purchasing account’s redownload controls. Check the other console users and their linked accounts before assuming that the purchase disappeared.

The download appears, but progress does not move
Large software packages can take a long time depending on the internet environment. A slow progress bar, by itself, does not prove that the console or the eShop is defective. Check the available storage, stop software that can pause downloads, and place the console in sleep mode so the download can continue in a supported state.
An add-on downloaded but is not available in the game
Downloading and installing add-on content are separate stages. Nintendo says add-on installation occurs automatically only when the base game is closed. If the add-on was purchased while the game was running, close that game completely and then check the HOME Menu and the game again.
A displayed error code is the only clue
Do not assign a meaning to a code from a general internet list. Nintendo’s support instructions and error-code information can vary by region, console generation, account state, and software version. Preserve the exact code and use the support page for your region when you escalate the problem.
Confirm the eShop prerequisites
Nintendo’s eShop requirements are simple but easy to overlook when a console has several users:
- The Switch must have an internet connection.
- The person using the eShop must be a Switch user linked to a Nintendo Account.
- A purchased download must be associated with the Nintendo Account that bought it.
Open the eShop with the user who made the purchase, not merely the user who normally plays the game. If the console has multiple accounts, compare the purchase history or Virtual Game Card entries for each relevant user. This prevents an entitlement problem from being mistaken for a network failure.

For a home network, a wired connection can be a useful comparison with wireless if the console and network equipment support it. The existence of a wired setup does not establish that it will solve a particular eShop error, however; it only gives you another connection path to test. If internet access is unavailable on the console, restore that access using the network’s normal documented procedure before troubleshooting the game itself.
Do not infer a service outage from one stalled download. The available Nintendo guidance does not establish a current outage, and a complete English error-code reference is not universal across regions. Check current official service information for your region before concluding that Nintendo’s servers are unavailable.
Check free space in Data Management
Insufficient storage is one of the most concrete causes of a download that starts and then stops. On the console, open HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management and inspect the available capacity.
Nintendo classifies downloads, add-ons, and update data as software data. These files can be stored in either the console’s system memory or a microSD card. Where the software and console support it, Data Management lets you organize software data or move it between system memory and the card. Save data is handled separately, so do not treat a software move as a save-data transfer.
What to do when space is low
- Record the free capacity shown in System Settings > Data Management.
- Identify software, add-ons, or update data that can be organized or moved under the options offered by the console.
- Make room, return to the HOME Menu, and check whether the waiting download resumes.
- If the console uses a card, confirm that the card type is appropriate for that Switch generation before moving or downloading more software.
A microSD card is relevant only when storage is the bottleneck. It cannot repair an account entitlement, an eShop connection, or a download paused by another game. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance is generation-specific:
Rank #3
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
| Console generation | Supported card guidance | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC | Nintendo recommends UHS-I; using microSDXC requires a system update. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | microSD Express | Use the card standard named in Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance rather than applying original-Switch card advice. |
Do not buy a card solely because a download is slow. A card addresses capacity and storage compatibility; it does not increase the speed of your internet connection or restore a purchase entitlement.

Let the download run in a supported state
Switch downloads do not always continue while another title is active. Nintendo documents two supported ways for purchased software to download: the console may be in sleep mode, or the user may play software that does not use online communication features.
Close software that uses online communication
Downloads pause while software with online communication features is being played, even if you are not currently playing an online match or communicating with another player. End that software and return to the HOME Menu. Then check the download entry again.
Use sleep mode
If you do not need to use the console, put it into sleep mode and leave it connected to the internet. Sleep mode is a documented download state, not a sign that the transfer has failed. When you wake the console, check the HOME Menu for the current status.
Close the base game for add-on installation
For downloadable content, wait for the download stage to finish and close the base game. Nintendo says installation happens automatically only when the base game is closed. A DLC entry that appears to be complete but is not usable can therefore be waiting for the game to exit rather than waiting for more network data.

Redownload a purchased title through the correct account
Purchased software is tied to the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. If an interrupted download is missing from the HOME Menu, use that purchasing account and the console’s Virtual Game Card controls to make the title available for redownload. The account must remain linked to a user on a console.
Nintendo’s current guidance changed on April 30, 2025: purchased software and add-ons are redownloaded through Virtual Game Cards rather than through the eShop. Nintendo Switch Online subscription-only software and demos are exceptions; those are handled from their product descriptions.
When the title does not appear
- Open the Virtual Game Card controls for the account that paid for the title.
- Check each relevant Switch user if more than one account is present.
- Confirm that the title was purchased by that account rather than merely played by it.
- Check whether distribution of the title has ended. Nintendo notes that a title may not be redownloadable after distribution ends.
Do not respond to a missing download by purchasing the software again. Nintendo’s eShop usage notice says purchased digital products generally cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred. Verify the owning account and redownload availability first.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you see | Most useful next check | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The eShop does not open | Internet access and the linked Switch user | Both are eShop prerequisites. |
| The download is present but barely advances | Available capacity, then sleep mode or closing active online software | Large data can take time, and active online-communication software pauses downloads. |
| The add-on shows as downloaded but is not usable | Close the base game | Add-on installation occurs automatically only while the base game is closed. |
| The purchased title is absent | Virtual Game Cards for the purchasing Nintendo Account | Ownership and redownload access follow the purchasing account. |
| A code appears | Record it exactly and consult regional Nintendo support | Code meanings and procedures depend on region and current support information. |
Know what not to do
Do not format a card as a first-line fix
Formatting a microSD card can erase data. The documented first checks are free space, storage organization or movement where supported, the download state, and account ownership. Formatting is not a general remedy for a network or purchase problem.

Do not confuse storage with bandwidth
A larger or faster card cannot correct a stalled internet transfer. Conversely, a good internet connection cannot create free space in system memory. Diagnose which resource is constrained before buying hardware.

Do not treat every pause as a failed download
A download can be paused intentionally by playing software with online communication features. It can also appear to be complete while an add-on waits for the base game to close. Check the state shown on the HOME Menu before deleting or repurchasing anything.
Do not guess from a generic error-code list
Support pages may use different labels or procedures in different regions, and the available information may change with system software. An exact code gives Nintendo’s support team something actionable; an approximate paraphrase does not.
Escalate with complete information
If the eShop still will not open, the download repeatedly fails after the prerequisite and storage checks, or the purchased item cannot be made available through the owning account, contact Nintendo Technical Support. Nintendo identifies technical support as the route for console settings, network connection, accounts, and digital-download purchases. Use the separate service-center or repair contact route when you suspect a hardware fault.
Have these details ready:
- Console model and region.
- The Nintendo Account and Switch user involved, without sharing your password.
- The title, update, or add-on you are trying to obtain.
- The stage at which the process stops: opening the eShop, starting, transferring, installing, or redownloading.
- The exact error code and the full wording shown on screen.
- Free capacity reported in System Settings > Data Management.
- Whether other internet services work on the console.
- Whether the problem remains after closing online-communication software and using sleep mode.
Those facts distinguish a connection problem from a storage limit, a paused download, an add-on installation state, an account entitlement issue, or a possible hardware fault. Follow the support instructions for your region because menu names and procedures can differ after software updates.
Why a slow download may still be normal
Nintendo’s download guidance warns that software files can be large and that download time depends on the internet environment. In its Japanese support wording, Nintendo states: “データ容量が大きいため、インターネット環境によっては、ソフトのダウンロードに時間がかかる場合があります。” This is translated as: “Because the data size is large, downloading software may take time depending on the internet environment.” It is guidance about variable download time, not a promise of a particular speed or a diagnosis of your connection.
Use that distinction when deciding whether to wait. If progress is advancing, leave the console in sleep mode or stop the software that pauses downloads. If progress never starts, storage is sufficient, and the account and internet prerequisites are correct, preserve the exact status and error information for Nintendo Technical Support rather than repeatedly purchasing or deleting the title.
A practical order of operations
For most cases, the least destructive sequence is:
- Identify whether the failure is opening the eShop, starting a download, transferring data, installing an add-on, or redownloading an owned title.
- Record any error code exactly.
- Confirm internet access and open the eShop with a Switch user linked to the relevant Nintendo Account.
- Check HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management for free space and organize or move software data where supported.
- Close software with online communication features, or put the console into sleep mode.
- For add-ons, close the base game so automatic installation can occur.
- For an owned title, use Virtual Game Cards for the purchasing account, observing the April 30, 2025 redownload change and the exceptions for Nintendo Switch Online subscription-only software and demos.
- Escalate to Nintendo Technical Support with the model, region, account context, title, stage, storage, and exact error details if the problem persists.
This sequence protects your save data and purchase rights while checking the causes Nintendo’s own guidance identifies most directly.
