Before you buy, confirm how many people can race together in the exact game edition and on your platform. A title’s “multiplayer” label may cover separate modes—same-screen split-screen, local wireless, and online—with different player limits, controller needs, and service requirements.
Start with the player count for the mode you will actually use
Check the listing for three distinct numbers: players on one system, players over local wireless, and players online. Do not treat one as a substitute for another. Split-screen means players share one display; local wireless connects nearby systems; online play connects players over the internet and may require an account or subscription.
For example, Nintendo lists GRID Autosport for Nintendo Switch as supporting 1–2 players on one system and 2–8 through local wireless or online play. The eight-player figure does not mean eight people can play split-screen on one console.
Check the exact platform and edition
Features can differ by platform, edition, region, and mode. Confirm the store page is for the system you own, then check whether the listed feature applies to the edition you plan to buy. Cross-platform play is not universal, even when a game supports online multiplayer.

LEGO’s LEGO 2K Drive FAQ describes two-player split-screen in Story, Cup Series, and Race modes. It lists crossplay for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC through Steam or Epic, but not Nintendo Switch. Its stated online support across platforms should not be read as a guarantee that every platform combination can play together.
Availability can also vary by region and change over time. The Nintendo UK 4PGP listing gives a February 5, 2026 release date for that listing. The official 4PGP site also describes a Nintendo Switch 2 edition and PS5/Steam launches in 2026. Check the current regional store page for the exact edition being sold.

Count compatible controllers before buying
Work out how many players need a controller and which controller types the game accepts. A console may include multiple controller pieces, but that does not automatically mean the game supports the group’s intended setup. The Nintendo 4PGP listing says multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player.
Controller requirements also affect whether a wheel is useful or compatible. Nintendo’s GRID Autosport listing names the HORI Pro Deluxe, HORI Pro Mini, and Nintendo LABO Toy-Con Car & Pedal as supported. A wheel is an optional control choice, not a general requirement for multiplayer. Before buying one, verify that the exact game and system support it, and make sure the group’s basic controller needs are already covered.

Look for assists and onboarding for mixed-skill groups
When experienced racers and newcomers will play together, check for adjustable difficulty, driving assists, control options, and a tutorial. These features can make a shared game easier to learn, but their presence and effect vary by title.
The Nintendo 4PGP listing identifies four difficulty levels, assist mode, gyroscopic controls, and a tutorial. Motorsport Games’ NASCAR Rivals FAQ describes adjustable assists and difficulty. Check the game’s own settings and description for the options your group wants rather than assuming all racing games provide them.

Match the race formats to how your group wants to play
Quick races, championships, time attack, career progression, and custom races serve different purposes. A quick race is suited to a short session; a championship or career structure gives play a longer arc; time attack focuses on improving a lap rather than racing a group. Confirm both the available formats and whether the mode supports the group’s chosen player setup.
The 4PGP official site lists Championship, Quick Race, and Time Attack, along with 19 cars and 14 circuits. These are product-listed features, not a guarantee that each format has the same multiplayer options. Check the mode details for the exact way your group plans to play.

Check internet, account, and subscription requirements
Separate local play from online play when checking extra requirements. Online racing may need an internet connection, an account, and a paid console service; local multiplayer may be available without those online requirements. Confirm the current store listing and service terms before relying on online access.
For example, Xbox lists Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled as supporting 2–4 local players with shared or split screen. Its store page says online multiplayer on console requires a separately sold Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription. The local player count and online subscription requirement describe different ways to play.
Online services can change. Motorsport Games’ NASCAR Rivals FAQ lists local wireless for up to eight players and online lobbies supporting up to 16 players; verify current service status if online lobbies are central to your plans.
Compare candidates against your group’s requirements
Use this checklist before choosing between games:
- Group size: How many people need to play at once, and will they share one screen, use local wireless, or play online?
- Platform and edition: Does the listing cover the exact console or PC edition you own, in your region?
- Controllers: How many compatible controllers are required, and which ones does the game support?
- Skill range: Are difficulty settings, assists, tutorials, or alternate control options available?
- Race structure: Does the game include the formats your group will return to, and do they support the intended player setup?
- Online access: Does the planned mode require internet, an account, or a separately paid subscription?
If multiple games meet those requirements, choose based on whether your group prefers arcade, kart, or simulation-style racing. The official listings establish individual game features, not a universal best choice or a substitute for trying a game firsthand.
