What to Check Before Buying an Early-Access or Newly Released Soulslike on Steam

A practical, evidence-based checklist for deciding whether a new or Early-Access Soulslike on Steam is worth buying now, waiting for patches, or skipping.

Buy an Early-Access or newly released Soulslike only when the build you can play today is worth the price on its own. Treat future bosses, regions, weapons, systems, performance fixes and story chapters as plans rather than part of what you are purchasing. Before clicking Buy, verify the current combat loop, read the developer’s Early Access answers, compare recent and lifetime reviews, check update activity and hardware reports, and understand Steam’s refund limit.

First, identify which kind of “early access” you are buying

Steam uses two similar phrases for different arrangements. The distinction changes what you receive and how the purchase should be judged.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Steam label What it means How to evaluate it
Early Access The game is sold while it is still in development. You receive playable software immediately, but it is unfinished. Judge the current build as a game you would be willing to play even if development takes longer than expected or planned additions change.
Advance Access Early play is offered as a pre-purchase benefit for an eligible package. The product is still scheduled for its later release. Evaluate the package and the launch product you are pre-purchasing; do not confuse this with a game being sold as an unfinished Early-Access project.
Newly released The title has left development access or launched recently, so its public build and support history are short. Look for launch-day patches, hotfixes, review changes and hardware reports. A release label does not guarantee polish.

Steam Support explains the Early Access buyer perspective at its Early Access FAQ. Steamworks documentation describes Early Access as software that should be playable in an alpha or beta state and worth its present value. Its central rule is explicit: customers should buy based on the current state, not on a future that may not be realized.

Establish what is playable right now

Do not begin with the roadmap. Begin with the store page’s current-state description, then confirm it with footage and player reports. Steam’s Early Access questionnaire asks developers to describe the modes, features and levels available now; those answers are more useful when you separate present-tense statements from planned work.

  1. Record the playable scope. Note the number and type of areas, bosses, weapons, builds, quests, endings, multiplayer modes and progression systems that are available in the current branch. If a feature is described only under “planned,” leave it out of the value you assign today.
  2. Check how much of the core loop is exposed. A Soulslike may have one polished vertical slice, a repeatable endgame loop, or a short sequence that stops before its intended progression. Identify where the current build ends and whether restarting provides meaningful variety.
  3. Watch unedited or clearly versioned gameplay. Trailers can show a future target or a curated slice. Look for recent streams, patch videos and player-uploaded footage that identify the build date.
  4. Read reports from the current version. Search reviews and discussion for the exact problems you care about: input response, stamina behavior, hit detection, camera control, boss artificial intelligence, checkpoints, save reliability and frame pacing.
  5. Ask whether this amount is enough without an update. If the answer is no, you are speculating on development rather than buying a finished experience.

Steam’s guidance does not promise that every planned feature will ship, arrive on schedule or remain unchanged. A store page can accurately describe intentions while the eventual game takes a different direction.

Test the Soulslike fundamentals, not just the atmosphere

Genre labels and attractive art can hide an incomplete system. Assess the parts that determine whether a Soulslike is enjoyable minute to minute.

Combat and input response

  • Verify that light and heavy attacks, dodges, blocks, parries and healing trigger consistently at the intended inputs.
  • Check whether animation recovery, invulnerability windows and hit reactions feel deliberate rather than unfinished.
  • Look for repeated reports of delayed inputs, attacks passing through enemies, unreliable lock-on or camera collisions.

Enemy and boss behavior

  • Read several independent accounts of boss patterns, tracking, arena geometry and phase transitions.
  • Separate complaints about a deliberately demanding design from reports of attacks that fail to telegraph or behave inconsistently.
  • Check whether a recent patch changed the encounters; older reviews may describe behavior that no longer exists.

Progression and build variety

  • List the attributes, weapons, upgrades, spells, status effects and respec options that are actually usable.
  • Determine whether several viable builds exist now or whether the available content funnels everyone into one solution.
  • Confirm that progression is persistent and saves reliably between sessions.

World structure and incentives

  • Check whether shortcuts, checkpoints, optional paths and exploration rewards work in the current map.
  • Find out if co-op, invasions or other online systems are live, experimental or absent.
  • Note whether the current ending is a deliberate conclusion, a placeholder, or simply where development stops.

These checks are decision criteria, not claims about any particular unnamed game. The question is whether the systems you value are functional and enjoyable now.

Category Examples How to treat it
Available now Current areas, modes, bosses, progression and supported features. Include it in your purchase decision after checking player evidence.
Planned Additional regions, weapons, classes, story chapters, multiplayer features, optimization or price changes. Consider it upside only. It is not guaranteed content.
Unspecified Exact dates, final scope, feature parity or a promised level of polish that the page does not define. Assume nothing. Avoid converting vague aspirations into a schedule.

Useful questions to answer from the page include: What is the approximate intended development period? How will players provide feedback? Can updates break saves? Is the price expected to change? Which systems are deliberately missing? Steam cautions developers against specific promises about events they cannot guarantee, so language such as “we hope,” “we plan” or “under consideration” should remain conditional in your decision.

Save-breaking updates deserve special attention in a Soulslike. If a patch can invalidate a character or require a new run, decide whether you are comfortable replaying early content. Keep backups only when the developer’s support guidance permits them, and do not assume an old save will remain compatible after a major build change.

Read Steam reviews as versioned evidence

An aggregate percentage is a starting signal, not a diagnosis. Steam shows a lifetime score and a score for the most recent 30 days. Compare both, then open reviews that contain reproducible details.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Compare the windows. A low lifetime score with a much stronger recent score can indicate improvement; a strong lifetime score with a collapsing recent score can indicate a damaging update. Neither pattern tells you which issues affect your hardware or play style.
  2. Prioritize specific reports. Favor reviews that name the build or patch, describe steps to reproduce a problem, and explain whether a later update fixed it.
  3. Look for repetition. One report of a crash may be an unusual configuration. Dozens of reports about the same boss, save file or frame-time spike are stronger evidence that the issue is systematic.
  4. Read positive reviews too. They can reveal what the game already does well and whether its appeal is the combat, exploration, build crafting, challenge or co-op.
  5. Check the review label and date. Early Access reviews remain marked as such after the game leaves Early Access unless the reviewer updates the review. Older entries can describe a substantially different build.
  6. Remember what counts toward the score. Steam’s User Reviews documentation says only purchases made by the reviewing account, not key activations, are included in the review score. The documentation is available at Steamworks User Reviews.

Use the review filters and search terms that match your risk: “controller,” “ultrawide,” “Linux,” “crash,” “save,” “co-op,” “stutter,” “parry,” or the name of your graphics card. Treat forum anecdotes as leads to verify, not as a measured benchmark.

Check whether development is active and communicative

A project’s update history shows how it handles problems, but silence alone does not prove abandonment. Review the announcements, patch notes, build dates and developer responses alongside the current store-page answers.

  • Recency: identify the latest substantive patch or developer update, not only a minor announcement.
  • Substance: look for fixes tied to player reports, known issues, balance changes and clear version numbers.
  • Consistency: compare what the page says is planned with what updates have actually delivered.
  • Transparency: note whether developers explain delays, save resets, scope changes and unresolved bugs.

Steamworks says a store-page notice may appear when more than 12 months pass without a qualifying build update or developer update event. The notice is a prompt to investigate the project’s history, not automatic proof that development has stopped. Read the timeline before deciding whether the gap is acceptable to you. Steam also says current and potential players should receive up-to-date development information; a stale Q&A is itself useful risk information.

Verify your PC can run the current build

Compare the game’s minimum and recommended specifications with your actual processor, graphics card, memory, storage and operating system. “Meets minimum” usually means the game may launch at a target setting; it does not establish stable frame pacing, shader-compilation behavior or performance in a crowded boss arena.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down your exact CPU, GPU, RAM, operating-system version and display resolution.
  2. Compare each item with the store page’s minimum and recommended requirements.
  3. Search recent reviews for users with the same or closely related hardware.
  4. Look specifically for traversal stutter, shader compilation, crashes after long sessions, controller detection and save corruption.
  5. Check patch notes for engine, driver or upscaling changes that may alter performance.

No independent benchmark or title-specific compatibility test is established here, so do not treat a requirements table as a performance guarantee. If your system is near the minimum, the safest evidence is a current player report from matching hardware and settings.

Understand Steam’s refund exposure before you test

Steam’s general refund policy normally allows a request within 14 days of purchase when playtime is under two hours. Playtime accrued in Early Access and Advance Access counts toward that two-hour threshold. Read the current policy at Steam Refunds because exceptions and purchase-specific terms can apply.

That limit changes how you evaluate a risky Soulslike:

  • Do not spend the first session watching menus, downloading optional packs or leaving the game running while troubleshooting.
  • Test input, performance, saving, loading and the opening combat loop early enough to make an informed request if the build is unusable.
  • Keep in mind that time spent in a pre-purchase’s Advance Access period also counts toward the allowance.
  • A refund is not a substitute for checking the page; eligibility is governed by Steam’s policy, not by the game’s Early Access label.

Steam Support’s Early Access guidance reiterates that buyers should consider what the game is like to play now and that the refund policy applies regardless of Early Access status.

Decision axis Questions to answer Warning signs
Current playable value Which areas, modes, progression systems and combat mechanics work today? The page emphasizes future content while describing little present content.
Completion and scope What is absent, and is the available amount worth the price without additions? The current ending or progression is clearly a placeholder you would not enjoy repeating.
Technical state How do players with comparable hardware describe stability and frame pacing? Repeated crashes, save failures or severe stutter with no recent fix.
Update and communication history How recent and substantial are patches, announcements and store-page changes? Long unexplained gaps or plans that no longer match updates.
Review context Do recent and lifetime sentiment differ, and are complaints concrete and current? You can find only launch-era reviews or vague praise and criticism.
Price and risk tolerance Would you be satisfied if no planned feature arrived? The purchase makes sense only if every roadmap item ships.
Refund constraints Can you test the critical risks within Steam’s time and date limits? Long setup or troubleshooting would consume the two-hour allowance.

Choose: buy now, wait, or skip

Buy now when the present build is the product you want

Buying now is rational when the currently available combat and progression already justify the price, your hardware has credible positive reports, and you accept restarts or unfinished edges. Future updates should be a bonus rather than the reason you click purchase.

Wait when the risks are identifiable but not yet resolved

Wait for a patch or a larger body of current reviews when the core looks promising but you see recurring performance problems, thin content, unclear save compatibility or an extended communication gap. Set a concrete trigger for reconsideration, such as a named hotfix, a stable build, or several weeks of reviews from your hardware class.

Skip when the current value does not meet your needs

Skip when the playable scope is too small, the combat systems you care about are missing, technical problems are widespread, or the purchase only makes sense if uncertain roadmap promises come true. A later launch or a major update can change that decision; skipping now is not a permanent verdict.

Purchase-day checklist

  • Confirm the page says Early Access, Advance Access or a normal release.
  • Write down what is playable now and where the current build ends.
  • Read the Early Access Q&A for duration, feedback plans, price changes and save-reset caveats.
  • Compare recent 30-day and lifetime review scores.
  • Read current, detailed reports about combat, bosses, saves, crashes and frame pacing.
  • Inspect announcements and patch notes, including any gap longer than 12 months.
  • Compare requirements with your exact PC and find matching-hardware reports.
  • Plan your first session so critical tests occur within Steam’s refund limits.
  • Buy only if the current build is acceptable without assuming planned content.
