Before buying a car for AirConsole, verify the exact model, model year, infotainment software, connected-service package, and country availability. AirConsole compatibility is not a simple brand-level feature: the game catalogue and access requirements can change by vehicle configuration, software version, subscription or licence, and market.
Use the car’s live infotainment system or have a dealer confirm that AirConsole is available on the specific vehicle you will receive. The system uses players’ smartphones as controllers, and BMW says front-screen play is available only while the vehicle is stationary.

The five checks that prevent an expensive mistake
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model, model year, body style, trim, propulsion version and delivery country. A supported name on a manufacturer list does not guarantee that every year or trim qualifies.
- Confirm the infotainment system. Write down the operating-system version, software release or service pack, and infotainment tier. AirConsole support can depend on those details.
- Check connected services and licences. Some vehicles need an active subscription or package such as BMW Digital Premium, VW Connect Plus or a Media Streaming licence. Ask whether access is included, promotional, renewable or tied to a previous owner.
- Verify the market. AirConsole publishes country-specific availability. A car imported from another market may have different apps, services or game selection.
- Open the app before signing. In the actual vehicle, search the infotainment interface or app store for “AirConsole,” open it and check whether it launches. A salesperson’s statement that the brand supports AirConsole is not enough.
AirConsole’s support overview, updated August 11, 2026, warns that the available portfolio can vary by model, operating system or software, infotainment package, subscriptions or licences, and country. Treat those variables as part of the specification, not as optional fine print.

Which cars are listed as compatible?
The following models appear in AirConsole’s current support overview. The list is a starting point for shopping, not a blanket approval for every example of each model.

Model-year wording matters. For example, the listed Audi Q3 and A6 C9 entries specify model year 2026, while the Q5 and A5 B10 entries specify model year 2025. Ask the seller to confirm the build and software of the particular vehicle rather than assuming a newer or older example has the same support.
BMW: check the operating system and package separately
BMW eligibility has several branches. BMW’s terms describe different prerequisites for OS 8.5, OS 9 and OS X, while BMW USA describes OS 8.5 with service pack 2021 and OS 9 with BMW Digital Premium. The terminology and package names can differ by market, so use the vehicle’s ConnectedDrive screen and the terms for your country.
BMW OS 8.5
The ConnectedDrive terms require ConnectedDrive Professional for the first year, followed by the Entertainment offer through the store, or a specified connected package in markets without that store. BMW’s terms also exclude the 2 Series Coupé, 3 Series and 4 Series when they run OS 8.5. That exclusion is easy to miss if a listing simply says “BMW OS 8.5.”

BMW OS 9
OS 9 requires an active BMW Digital Premium subscription. Confirm that the subscription is attached to the car you are buying and ask when the current term ends. A used car can display the app during a trial period and lose access when that period expires.

BMW OS X
OS X requires an active data connection. BMW says this can be supplied by BMW Digital Premium, an eligible connected package or a personal Wi-Fi hotspot. OS X also changes the safety context: BMW describes rear Theater Screen use while driving for eligible vehicles, but that exception does not make front-screen play permissible.
BMW capacity and controller setup
BMW’s in-car-gaming material describes support for up to seven players in its BMW version. AirConsole’s BMW/MINI instructions say the first player who connects becomes the main controller and selects games. Every player still needs a compatible smartphone to join the lobby.
Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: verify service status
AirConsole lists the Golf, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tayron, Passat Variant and several ID. electric models, including the ID.4. The listed Volkswagen models require active VW Connect Plus. Check that the car has the correct infotainment tier, that the service is activated in your country and that the seller is not relying on an expired trial.
For Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the support overview gives production or availability dates for each entry. T7 Multivan and New California are listed from July 2024; Caddy from May 2024; Crafter and Grand California from June 2024; and ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo with software 5.x from June 2024. These entries require at least Ready2Discover infotainment and active VW Connect Plus.

If you are considering an ID.4 or another listed vehicle, do not infer that every unit qualifies. Ask the dealer to demonstrate AirConsole in the vehicle, then photograph or record the software version and connected-service page for your purchase file.
Audi, Porsche and Škoda: app-store and licence checks
Audi
The listed Audi models obtain AirConsole through the Audi Application Store in supported countries. Confirm that the car’s store is enabled, that the delivery country is covered and that the exact model-year designation matches the listing. A Q5 model year 2025 and a Q3 model year 2026 are not interchangeable eligibility claims.
Porsche
The supported Porsche entry is the Macan Electric through Porsche App Center. Check that the vehicle’s software and regional app store expose AirConsole before purchase; the model name alone does not establish access in every market.
Škoda
Škoda’s entries are Enyaq and Elroq with software version 4.x or 5.x and an active Media Streaming package licence. Have the seller show both the software version and the licence status. If either is missing, ask whether it can be activated in your country and what recurring charge applies.

How AirConsole works in a supported car
- Park safely and switch on the infotainment system.
- Open the vehicle’s entertainment package or search the infotainment interface or app store for AirConsole.
- Launch a game. The car display shows a QR code and a connection code.
- Each player scans the QR code with a phone or enters the displayed code on the phone.
- Players join the lobby. AirConsole’s BMW/MINI guide says the first connected player becomes the main controller and chooses games.
- Start the game only after confirming the vehicle’s stationary-use rules and that every player is safely seated.
The published connection instructions do not say that you need a new phone, a dedicated controller or another accessory. The phone is the controller. Check your household phones for browser or app compatibility before a trip, but do not treat a new handset as a purchase requirement.
Safety rules: front screen versus rear screen
AirConsole’s BMW/MINI guide says the feature can be used only while the vehicle is parked. BMW’s FAQ states that play on the front Curved Display is possible only while stationary. BMW separately describes rear Theater Screen use while driving in vehicles with OS X. That rear-screen exception is specific to eligible BMW vehicles and must not be generalized to a front display, another BMW operating system or another automaker.
- Use the front display only when the car is stationary.
- Do not let a driver operate a phone or select games while moving.
- Do not assume that a rear-screen feature exists in every vehicle with AirConsole.
- Follow local traffic law and the vehicle handbook if either is more restrictive.
A practical comparison framework for your shortlist
Score each candidate on the same six axes. This avoids choosing a car because its brochure mentions AirConsole while overlooking an unavailable service package.

AirConsole cautions that country and configuration differences can change the available game portfolio. Therefore, “the app opens” and “the games your family wants are available” are separate checks. Ask to see the catalogue on the car’s own screen.

Common buying pitfalls and how to resolve them
A dealer says the brand supports AirConsole
Request the exact model year, software version and connected package. Then ask for a live demonstration. If the car is not on site, make access a written condition of the order rather than relying on a generic brochure.
The app appears but asks for a subscription
Record the package name, price, renewal interval and expiry date. Confirm whether the first year is included and whether the next owner can continue the service. Do not count a temporary trial as permanent compatibility.
A used car has older software
Ask whether an official update brings it to a supported version, whether the update is available in your country and whether it changes the required package. Never assume that a software update is free or that every hardware revision can receive it.
The vehicle was imported
Check the original market, account region, cellular connectivity and app-store catalogue. A car can have the same model name but a different service entitlement or country restriction.
Players cannot connect phones
Park the vehicle, reopen AirConsole, display a fresh QR code and have players scan or enter the new code. Ensure phones have an internet connection if the vehicle’s setup requires one, and remove stale lobby sessions before trying again.
What to ask the seller, word for word
- “What exact infotainment operating system and software or service-pack number does this VIN have?”
- “Can you open AirConsole on this vehicle now and show the available games?”
- “Which subscription, connected service or licence is required, and when does it expire?”
- “Is that service transferable to the next owner and available at my delivery address?”
- “Are there any model-year, trim, body-style or country exclusions?”
- “Is play limited to a parked vehicle, and does this car have any rear-screen capability?”
Only after those answers match the vehicle you intend to buy should AirConsole count as a feature in your decision. The safest purchase is the one whose app, software and service entitlement you can verify in the car itself, not the one with the broadest marketing claim.
