Short answer: Naruto is the original coming-of-age story about an ostracized boy who wants recognition and the Hokage title. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is its official next-generation sequel, following Naruto Uzumaki’s son in a peaceful, technologically modernized Hidden Leaf Village. Boruto is not a remake or a side story: it changes the protagonist’s starting position, the social era, the creative team’s division of labor and the stated approach to antagonists.
The difference is easiest to understand as a change from earning recognition to establishing an identity under an inherited reputation. Naruto begins outside the village’s acceptance. Boruto begins inside its most famous family and has to prove that he is more than “the Hokage’s son.”

Is Boruto a sequel to Naruto?
Yes. The official franchise overview describes Boruto: Naruto Next Generations as the sequel to Naruto. That relationship is chronological and narrative: Boruto follows a later generation in the same world, with Naruto’s achievements shaping the political and family context in which the new story begins.
Naruto’s manga began in 1999 and ended in 2014 after 700 chapters. The franchise overview dates Boruto from 2016 and identifies V Jump as its publication home. Those are manga-publication facts. They should not be mixed with television episode totals, which are a separate measurement and vary depending on whether a count includes different adaptation categories.
What carries over
- The Hidden Leaf Village remains the central setting.
- Naruto’s position as Hokage is part of Boruto’s starting premise.
- The sequel uses the established shinobi world while asking how it functions after a period of conflict and social change.
- The new generation inherits relationships, institutions and reputations created during Naruto’s story.
What does not carry over unchanged
Boruto does not reset Naruto’s premise with another unknown child seeking the same milestone. Its lead character enters a village that already knows his family. The central tension therefore shifts from exclusion to comparison: Boruto has access to recognition by association but wants people to judge his own ability and choices.
The protagonists begin from opposite social positions
Naruto: an outcast asking to be seen
Naruto’s original premise is built around a boy who is not accepted by his community. He dreams of becoming Hokage and seeks recognition as proof that he belongs. Progress in the story is therefore personal and public at the same time: learning to become a stronger ninja also means changing how the village sees him.
That setup gives the original series an upward trajectory. Naruto starts with little social credibility and must earn trust through training, missions and relationships. The Hokage title is both a career goal and a symbol of acceptance.
Boruto: a recognized child seeking individual identity
Boruto begins with the opposite problem. He is Naruto’s son, and Naruto leads the village as Hokage. Boruto is recognized before he has established a reputation of his own. The pressure is not invisibility but the feeling that every achievement will be measured against his father.
His desire to be recognized as a shinobi reframes the familiar idea of acknowledgment. Naruto wants the village to notice him; Boruto wants it to distinguish him from a famous parent. That difference affects how the sequel presents family expectations, status and the meaning of success.

Why the contrast matters
The two protagonists are connected by inheritance but not interchangeable. Naruto’s question is, “Can someone the village rejects become its leader?” Boruto’s is closer to, “Can the child of that leader be valued for something that is not inherited?” Reading them as identical underestimates what the sequel is trying to change.
The Hidden Leaf changes with the era
The official Boruto anime synopsis presents a peaceful, modernized Hidden Leaf Village. Its examples include skyscrapers, large screens and trains, alongside a warning that shinobi must adapt to changing times. Civilian life is more visible, infrastructure is more developed and technology is part of the environment in which the new generation trains and works.
By contrast, the early Naruto premise focuses on a struggling young ninja and a village whose social order has not yet been framed through Boruto’s modernizing lens. The difference is not simply that one series contains gadgets. It is a change in the conditions under which ninja skills matter.
Peace changes the problem the characters face
A peaceful village creates opportunities that were not available to the previous generation, but it also raises a question: what role should shinobi play when the immediate environment is safer and more technologically connected? Boruto’s official synopsis answers that the profession must evolve. The sequel can therefore examine adaptation rather than only survival.
Modernization is a setting feature, not a promise that every plot is technological
The skyscrapers, screens and trains are concrete examples from the official synopsis. They support the claim that Boruto’s era is more modernized, but they do not establish that every arc is about technology or that traditional shinobi concerns disappear. The series still operates in the same fictional world; modernization is one pressure acting on it.
The creative handoff from Kishimoto to Ikemoto
Masashi Kishimoto created Naruto and says he handled its story and main illustrations. In the same interview, he describes Mikio Ikemoto as an assistant who worked on backgrounds and shadow clones during the original series.
For Boruto, the arrangement changes substantially. Kishimoto says, “For Boruto, Ikemoto is completely in charge of the story and main illustrations. It really is Ikemoto’s manga.” The official site’s credits identify Kishimoto as supervisor and Ikemoto as the manga artist.

What “supervisor” means here
The credit establishes oversight, not that Kishimoto is secretly writing every chapter. Ikemoto is the person responsible for the sequel’s story and main illustrations under that supervisory relationship. Describing Boruto as “another Naruto drawn by Kishimoto” is therefore inaccurate.

Why the change affects the reading experience
A new lead creator can preserve continuity while emphasizing different priorities, pacing and visual decisions. The sequel remains authorized as part of the Naruto franchise, but its authorship is not identical to the original’s. That distinction is important when comparing tone or character emphasis: differences are not automatically continuity errors, and similarities do not mean the same creator is making every decision.
How the two series approach antagonists
Ikemoto offers a direct explanation for one intended difference. He describes Naruto’s antagonists as having their own purposes and beliefs, with their backgrounds and motivations explored. For Boruto, he says he went in the opposite direction and created “unreasonable antagonists, obstacles that have to be challenged and overcome for the sake of human life itself.”
This is a statement of creative intent, not a universal classification of every villain. It is more accurate to say that Ikemoto deliberately wanted a contrast in the way antagonistic forces function.
Naruto’s stated model
In Ikemoto’s description, an enemy in Naruto is often presented as a person with a coherent purpose or belief system. The reader is invited to understand how that character arrived at a position, even when the character’s actions are destructive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBoruto’s stated direction
In his explanation of Boruto, Ikemoto emphasizes unreasonable obstacles and the need to overcome threats for humanity’s sake. That framing places more weight on an external danger that must be confronted, rather than requiring every conflict to be organized around a villain’s sympathetic ideology.
How to use this distinction without oversimplifying
- Do not claim that every Naruto antagonist is deeply sympathetic or that every Boruto antagonist lacks motivation.
- Treat Ikemoto’s comments as an account of intended direction, not a scorecard for every arc.
- Expect continuity of the world but a different balance between ideological conflict and immediate existential threat.
The manga and anime are related but not interchangeable
The original series and sequel each exist in more than one format. The 700-chapter figure belongs to the Naruto manga. The official Boruto anime page describes a separate adaptation and credits Studio Pierrot for animation production. It also lists Kishimoto as writer/supervisor and Ikemoto as manga artist in the related manga credit.

Because those are different media, a comparison should not present a manga chapter total as though it were an anime episode total. The available evidence here does not establish a current, fully comparable count of anime-only and manga-canon episodes, so no single episode number can fairly summarize the two adaptations.
What the anime synopsis confirms
The official anime page confirms the peaceful, modernized village premise and the idea that shinobi must adapt. It is useful for describing the television adaptation’s setup, but it does not replace the manga’s publication data.

The official anime page warns that streaming availability varies by region. A service that carries an episode in one country may not carry it in another, and catalogs can change. Check the current listings for your country before choosing a viewing service; a global provider list cannot be stated accurately without a specified market and date.
Should you watch or read Naruto before Boruto?
For the clearest character and world context, start with Naruto. The sequel assumes that Naruto’s rise, the village’s history and the meaning of the Hokage position matter. Experiencing that foundation first makes Boruto’s family relationships and generational contrasts more legible.
You can begin with Boruto if you accept some lost context. Boruto has its own protagonist and immediate premise, so a newcomer can understand that he is the Hokage’s son in a modernized village. What you will not have is the emotional history behind Naruto’s reputation or the full significance of the institutions the sequel inherits.
Recommended order for a new reader or viewer
- Experience the Naruto story in the format you prefer, keeping its 700-chapter manga count separate from anime episode counts.
- Move to Boruto: Naruto Next Generations as the next-generation sequel rather than treating it as a reboot.
- If you switch from manga to anime, verify which adaptation and regional catalog you are using; availability and episode groupings differ by market.
When starting with Boruto makes sense
- You are primarily interested in the next generation and a peaceful, modernized setting.
- You want a protagonist dealing with a famous parent rather than an unknown status.
- You are comfortable learning some of Naruto’s history through context instead of seeing it unfold in order.
Publication scale and franchise context
The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE says the Naruto manga has sold more than 250 million print copies globally. The page does not attach a separate publication year to that figure, so it should be understood as the figure stated on that overview rather than as a dated sales snapshot.
That scale explains why Boruto begins with an unusually established legacy. The sequel is not introducing a world with no expectations; it is placing a new lead inside a franchise whose original hero is already internationally recognized and, within the story, already Hokage.

Common misconceptions about the comparison
“Boruto is just Naruto with a new name.”
No. It is an official sequel with a different protagonist’s social position, a later era and a different primary manga creator. The inherited world creates continuity, but the premise is deliberately changed.

“Naruto and Boruto have the same protagonist arc.”
They share a desire for recognition, but the obstacles differ. Naruto is an outcast trying to be accepted; Boruto is already identified through his father and wants individual recognition.
“The modern setting means Boruto abandoned the shinobi world.”
The official synopsis says the opposite: shinobi remain central, but they must adapt to a peaceful, modernized village. Modern infrastructure changes the conditions of the profession; it does not erase it.
“Kishimoto personally draws and writes every Boruto chapter.”
The official interview says Ikemoto is completely in charge of the sequel’s story and main illustrations, with Kishimoto supervising. The roles are related but not identical.
“Every Boruto antagonist is unreasonable and every Naruto villain is ideological.”
Ikemoto described a deliberate contrast in direction. His statement should not be turned into an absolute rule about every antagonist in either series.

It does not. Seven hundred is the manga chapter count reported for the original series. Manga chapters, television episodes and adaptation categories are separate measures.
Which series is a better fit for you?
| If you want… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| An outsider’s climb toward recognition and leadership | Naruto | Its core premise follows an academy outcast pursuing the Hokage role. |
| A hero defined against a famous parent | Boruto | Boruto begins as the Hokage’s son and seeks recognition as his own kind of shinobi. |
| The original social and historical foundation | Naruto first | The sequel’s institutions and reputations carry more weight after you know their origin. |
| A peaceful village adapting to new technology | Boruto | The official anime synopsis foregrounds skyscrapers, screens, trains and changing shinobi responsibilities. |
| A creator-led continuation with a clear handoff | Either, with the credit distinction in mind | Kishimoto led Naruto; Ikemoto leads Boruto’s story and main illustrations under Kishimoto’s supervision. |
Bottom line: the sequel changes the question, not just the cast
Naruto is a story about an excluded child earning the right to be recognized. Boruto is a sequel about the child of that recognized leader trying to be judged independently, in a village transformed by peace and modernization. The publication chronology, creative credits and creator comments all point to the same conclusion: Boruto continues Naruto’s world while intentionally changing its starting conditions.
Read or watch Naruto first if you want the full emotional and historical foundation. Start with Boruto if the next generation, inherited reputation and a modernized Hidden Leaf are the parts that interest you most. In either order, keep the manga and anime facts separate, treat Ikemoto’s antagonist comments as stated creative intent and check regional availability before selecting a streaming catalog.
