Then check compatibility and try a save from before the mod was installed. Recovery depends on the game and platform; removing a mod or reinstalling the game does not guarantee that a modded save can be repaired.
1. Protect your saves before troubleshooting
Stop saving over the affected slot. Copy your save files to a location outside the game’s active save folder or cloud-sync path, and preserve configuration files and a mod list if the game uses them. A second local folder or a backup service can help; an optional external drive is another place to keep a copy, not a repair for files that are already corrupted.
Cloud saves are not automatically independent backups. Their behavior varies by platform and service, so check whether syncing could overwrite a usable copy before changing or deleting files. Folder paths and backup controls differ by game and platform.
For one game-specific example, Bethesda’s Skyrim PC reinstall guidance says to rename the user-data folder before reinstalling and copy saved games back from a backup folder afterward. Do not apply its folder instructions to another game or platform.

2. Record what changed and check compatibility
Before removing files or changing versions, note the exact game and edition, platform, game build, mod manager, mod name and version, recent changes, when the crash occurs, and the full error text. Include the load order and dependencies if relevant. This gives the game’s support team or mod author useful details; Bethesda directs players with issues tied to specific mods to contact their authors.
Ask whether the game itself updated shortly before the problem began. Bethesda notes that mods may stop working properly after a game update until their creators update them. Compare the installed game build with the mod’s stated requirements and update history, and check any documented dependencies or load-order instructions. Do not assume that upgrading or downgrading the game is safe for a save already in progress.

3. Test the suspected mod without risking the original save
Use the game’s supported controls or mod manager to disable the suspected mod, changing one thing at a time. Where possible, test a separate known-good save or a new game rather than repeatedly opening the only affected save. Keep the original files untouched.
Bethesda Support advises Skyrim Special Edition players whose game crashes after a Creation or mod installation to “uninstall it and reload to confirm that the issue is related to it.” That is a diagnostic step in Bethesda’s specific support context, not a universal rule that every mod can safely be removed from an active save. Consult the game and mod’s uninstall instructions first.

Paradox documents a clean diagnostic launch with --disableMods --noWorkshop for its own troubleshooting context. These flags are not general-purpose instructions for other games. If a clean launch works, that helps narrow the cause, but it does not prove that a save created with mods is safe or repaired.
4. Try a save from before the change
If a save made before the mod was installed or updated loads, preserve it as a recovery point. Continue from it only after checking the mod’s removal or update directions. In its Skyrim guidance, Bethesda describes identifying saves without the mod marker; that interface detail applies to Skyrim, not every game. Bethesda also advises players to keep unmodded saves available as a fallback.

If no earlier unaffected save exists, keep a separate copy of the affected save before experimenting. A game may require starting a new save if the existing one cannot be recovered; there is no general guarantee that removing the mod, reinstalling, or verifying files will repair it.

If saves still fail when the suspected mods are disabled, consult the publisher’s support page for the exact game, edition, and platform before deleting files, reinstalling, or rolling back. File verification or reinstallation may address damaged game files, but neither should be treated as a promise to restore a corrupted save.

Bethesda’s Skyrim PC article presents a clean reinstall as a later step when crashes continue: it describes removing mod files, disabling third-party mod managers, preserving user data, and reinstalling. Its instructions are Skyrim PC-specific, and it warns that a save corrupted by a mod may remain unusable.
6. Give the mod author a reproducible report
If one mod appears responsible, send its author the game and build, mod version, mod manager, load order and dependencies, steps that reproduce the issue, and the full error or crash log. Say whether a new game, an earlier save, or a clean launch behaves differently. Do not infer a cause from a crash log without evaluating the log itself.
