Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a homebrew tool may have exposed your PlayStation account, treat that first as an account-security incident: stop using the tool, secure the email account tied to PlayStation, and follow Sony’s account-recovery steps. If the console itself is malfunctioning, use PlayStation’s official troubleshooting guidance before considering a reset. A Safe Mode reinstall deletes console data, and Sony’s instructions describe reinstalling system software—not diagnosing or proving removal of malware.
What to do first
- Stop running the tool. Do not enter PlayStation or email credentials into the tool, unofficial pages, or links it supplies. This is a cautious response to a possible exposure, not proof that the tool is malicious or that the console is infected.
- Secure your email account. If PlayStation account changes look unfamiliar, Sony advises changing the email account’s password first. If you cannot secure that email account, contact its provider.
- Recover or secure your PlayStation account. Use PlayStation’s account recovery instructions. If you cannot sign in, or someone changed your sign-in ID, online ID, password, email access, or verification method, contact PlayStation Support or the Online Assistant.
- Check purchases and console symptoms separately. Review account activity and payment history, then troubleshoot the console using official Safe Mode instructions. Suspicious account activity alone does not establish that the console has malware.
The official support pages cited here provide account recovery and console troubleshooting routes. They do not identify a particular homebrew tool as malicious or offer a universal malware-removal procedure.

Keep the two issues distinct as you work through them. A suspicious sign-in, an unfamiliar email, or an unknown purchase is a reason to secure and recover the account. A console that freezes or will not start is a troubleshooting issue. Either can happen alongside the other, but one does not prove the cause of the other. Avoid trying more tools or downloads while you are unsure what happened; they can add uncertainty without supplying an official diagnostic result.
Recover and protect the PlayStation account
If you can still sign in
Change the password to a strong one you do not use for other accounts, then review account security settings. PlayStation recommends using different passwords and keeping a password manager to help manage them; a password manager can help prevent password reuse, but it cannot restore a compromised account. See Sony’s security best practices and security-settings guidance.

Enable 2-Step Verification or a passkey if available for your account and region. Sony’s 2-Step Verification adds another sign-in layer using a code delivered by SMS or an authenticator app. Follow the current 2-Step Verification instructions and keep recovery details current.
Think of these as steps to reduce the chance of another unauthorized sign-in after you regain control, not as a substitute for account recovery. Use a password that is unique to PlayStation, and secure the linked email account with a different password as well. Sony recommends different passwords; reusing the same one on email and PlayStation can leave both accounts exposed if one is compromised. A password manager may make unique passwords easier to maintain, but it does not itself add a second sign-in factor or undo changes made by someone else.
If you cannot sign in
Use the official PlayStation account recovery flow. If the sign-in ID or password was changed without permission, or you no longer control the email address or verification method needed to recover the account, contact PlayStation Support through the compromised-account support route. Recovery options and labels may differ by region.

Do not keep sending credentials to a homebrew tool or an unfamiliar recovery page because the official flow is difficult to use. Use PlayStation’s support site and follow its current instructions. If the email account itself is inaccessible or cannot be secured, contact the email provider; access to that inbox may be important for account recovery. Where you cannot complete recovery because you lost access to your email or verification method, Support is the appropriate escalation rather than attempting unofficial workarounds.
If you suspect another device remains signed in after you recover access, PlayStation provides a way to sign out of all devices through Account Management. Follow the current sign-in and sign-out instructions; the cited page is localized for Canada, so use the equivalent regional support page if the menus differ.

Check for unknown charges or account changes
For an unfamiliar payment, check PlayStation Store transaction history and subscriptions first. If you still cannot explain the charge, use PlayStation’s official unauthorized-payment and compromised-account guidance to reach the appropriate support or refund route. If you cannot access the account, contact PlayStation Support rather than trying to investigate through the suspicious tool.
Check whether the activity is actually unfamiliar before treating it as an unauthorized charge: review the transaction details and subscriptions listed in the account. If it remains unexplained, the official support guidance is the next step. PlayStation’s official support guidance does not specify a general deadline, a guaranteed refund, or a particular outcome, so do not assume that an unfamiliar charge will automatically be reversed.
Removing saved payment methods is not a universal required step for every suspected homebrew-tool incident. Sony mentions that measure in the specific stolen-console scenario; use it when relevant to your situation, not as a substitute for recovering and securing an account.
Choose console troubleshooting carefully
Safe Mode is a menu of different troubleshooting actions, not one single reset. A settings restore or database rebuild is different from resetting the console or reinstalling its system software. Check the purpose and data impact of the exact option before selecting it in Sony’s Safe Mode guide.
The key comparison is what an option is meant to do and whether it erases data. A restore-default-settings option and a database rebuild are separate troubleshooting actions; they are not the same as a full reset. Resetting or initializing, and reinstalling system software, are destructive choices. Do not select an option merely because its name sounds like a general cleanup, and check the current instructions for your specific PS4 or PS5 before proceeding.

| Action | Purpose | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Restore default settings | Returns settings to their defaults; it is distinct from a full console reset. | Not the same as deleting all user data; confirm the current option details in PlayStation’s Safe Mode guide. |
| Rebuild database | A separate Safe Mode troubleshooting action for console storage/database issues. | Not the same as a full reset or system-software reinstall; consult the guide for the specific console and option. |
| Reset or initialize the console | Returns the console to a reset state. | Removes user data. Back up data you can preserve before proceeding. |
| Reinstall system software | Reinstalls console system software using the official files and procedure. | Deletes all data on the console. It is not a demonstrated malware scan or proof of malware removal. |
Sony’s reinstallation guidance states: “Reinstalling your console’s system software deletes all data on your console. This process is often referred to as a ‘factory’ reset, or ‘hard’ reset.” Back up what you can before choosing a destructive option, and do not treat reinstalling as the next automatic step after using homebrew.

Before a reset or reinstall, pause and consider what you need to preserve. These options can remove user data, so back up what you can before beginning and make sure you understand the specific option’s effects. The cited guidance does not promise that every kind of content can be recovered after deletion. A reset may be appropriate as troubleshooting in some situations, but it is not a universal response to a suspected account compromise and does not prove that a tool caused the console’s symptoms.
Reinstall only with official PlayStation instructions
If ordinary troubleshooting has not resolved a software problem and you decide a full reinstall is appropriate, use the current instructions for your console model and region. Sony’s PS5 and PS4 reinstallation guide specifies a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The cited instructions use these folder and file paths:
- PS5:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP - PS4:
PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP
The USB drive is simply the medium used for Sony’s documented installation process; it is not a scanner, cleaner, or treatment for malware. Use the correct folder and file path for your console, and verify the current file and steps on the official page before starting. Instructions and system-software files can change, so do not rely on a file found through a homebrew tool, forum, or download page that is not PlayStation.
Download the installation file only from PlayStation and follow the instructions for the correct console. Sony warns against using update data from other sources or methods. The cited update guidance also says an altered console may not operate properly or accept official update data; unauthorized update sources or methods can affect warranty or repair-service eligibility. Warranty outcomes depend on the circumstances and region, so do not assume a specific result.

A successful reinstall shows that the software-reinstallation process completed; it does not establish whether a homebrew tool installed malware or prove that malware has been removed. Sony’s cited instructions explain reinstallation, not malware diagnosis. If you are not sure whether a reinstall is necessary, use the official troubleshooting guidance or ask PlayStation Support rather than experimenting with unofficial firmware or recovery downloads.

- Contact PlayStation Support for suspicious activity, unauthorized changes to sign-in information, an account you cannot recover, or an unexplained charge. Use the official compromised-account support page.
- Contact PlayStation Repairs if the official reinstall fails or the console remains unusable after following Sony’s steps. The reinstallation guide directs users to support to arrange repair when reinstalling does not resolve the issue.
- Do not experiment with unofficial firmware or random “cleaner” downloads. They are not part of Sony’s documented recovery process and may complicate troubleshooting or repair eligibility.
Use the account-support route when the problem is access, suspicious account changes, or an unexplained payment; use the repair route when the console remains unusable or official reinstallation fails. These routes address different problems. Support can direct you to the appropriate official process, but the official support pages cited here do not describe a universal service for proving whether a homebrew tool was malicious.
The cited support pages are localized to the US, Australia, Singapore, UK, and Canada. Recovery menus, repair availability, warranty terms, and exact instructions can vary by region and change over time; use the PlayStation support site for your country and confirm the current steps before resetting or reinstalling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a homebrew tool damaging my PlayStation mean the console has malware?
Not necessarily. Suspicious account activity and a malfunctioning console should be handled separately. The cited PlayStation support pages explain account recovery and console troubleshooting, but do not identify a particular tool as malicious or provide a universal malware diagnosis or removal process.
Should I factory reset or reinstall my PlayStation right away?
No. Check the official Safe Mode guidance first because its options have different purposes and data effects. A full reset or system-software reinstall removes user data, so back up what you can and confirm that the option is appropriate for your console.

Will reinstalling system software delete games and saves?
Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console. Back up what you can before proceeding; consult Sony’s current instructions for the exact option and console.
What should I do if I see an unknown PlayStation purchase?
Check PlayStation Store transaction history and subscriptions. If the charge is still unexplained, use PlayStation’s official unauthorized-payment and compromised-account guidance. Contact Support if you cannot access the account.
What if someone changed my sign-in information or I cannot access my email?
Secure the linked email account first if you can, then use PlayStation’s account-recovery flow. If your sign-in information was changed without permission or you cannot access the email or verification method needed for recovery, contact PlayStation Support or the Online Assistant.
When should I contact PlayStation Repairs?
Use PlayStation Repairs if the official reinstall fails or the console remains unusable after you follow Sony’s troubleshooting steps. For account access or suspicious activity, contact PlayStation Support instead.
The Bottom Line
Stop using the suspected tool, secure the linked email and PlayStation account, and check unknown activity through official support. Treat console troubleshooting as a separate issue: Safe Mode choices differ, and a full reset or reinstall deletes user data. Use only current PlayStation instructions and files; reinstalling is a recovery step, not proof that malware was present or removed.
