If a PS4 or PS5 fails after a jailbreak attempt, work from the least destructive official option to the most destructive. Start by identifying the model and recording what the screen shows. Then try Safe Mode, its non-erasing repair and maintenance options, a USB system software update, and only then a full reinstallation, which Sony says deletes all user data.
Sony’s official support pages cover standard recovery. They do not document how a jailbroken console responds to these steps, so none of the steps below is guaranteed to restore a modified system or to keep your saved data. The sections below explain what each step does and where the official guidance stops.
Record four facts before you change anything
The right recovery path depends on what the console is doing right now. Write down:
- Model: whether the console is a PS4 or a PS5. Sony uses different folder names, filenames, and Safe Mode menu labels for each.
- Power: whether the console turns on at all, and whether the power indicator or fan responds.
- Safe Mode: whether Safe Mode appears, or the console stops before reaching it.
- Exact message: the error code or menu text on screen, and the action you took just before the failure.
Pause before using any firmware file
Use only system software files downloaded from Sony’s official system software page for your console model. Do not install firmware from unofficial mirrors or community archives, because a mismatched or altered file can make recovery harder. Sony’s guidance does not say that an official update or reinstallation will preserve a jailbreak, and it makes no claim about recovering saved data from a console in an unknown state.

Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Enter Safe Mode
Safe Mode is the starting point for every official recovery step below. Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes the sequence:
- Turn the console fully off. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep.
- Connect your controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
If the Safe Mode menu appears, continue to the next section. If it does not, skip ahead to the troubleshooting section.
Try the options that do not erase data
Sony’s Safe Mode menu offers maintenance options that repair storage or rebuild system data without reinstalling the operating system. Choose these before anything else. Menu labels can change between system software versions, so follow the text the console displays.
PS5 options
- Repair Console Storage: Sony describes this option as one that does not erase data.
- Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache: clears the system software cache.
- Update System Software: installs an update from the internet or a USB drive.
PS4 options
- Rebuild Database: rebuilds the console’s system database.
- Update System Software: installs an update from the internet or a USB drive.
If Safe Mode will not appear or the console stays stuck
Sony’s Safe Mode troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the physical connections before anything else:

- Confirm the power cable is firmly seated at both the console and the wall outlet.
- Check the HDMI cable at both ends, and test another cable or port if you have one.
- Check the USB cable you are using for the controller.
- Turn the console off, unplug it from power for 20 minutes, plug it back in, and try Safe Mode again. Sony recommends this for both PS4 and PS5.
If a PS5 keeps re-entering Safe Mode, Sony directs users to Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache. On a PS4 that keeps re-entering Safe Mode, Sony directs users to Rebuild Database. If the console still cannot reach a usable state, move to the repair section below.
Update system software from a USB drive
Use this route when the console can reach Safe Mode and the Update System Software option is available, but the internet update fails or is not available. Sony’s manual update method uses a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with a specific folder and filename for each model:
| Console | Folder path on the drive | Required filename |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | PS5/UPDATE/ | PS5UPDATE.PUP |
| PS4 | PS4/UPDATE/ | PS4UPDATE.PUP |
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create the folder path shown in the table for your console model.
- Download the update file from Sony’s official system software page and copy it into that folder under the exact filename shown above.
- Connect the USB drive to the console and start Safe Mode.
- Choose the Update System Software option and follow the on-screen prompts. Sony’s update guide has the current wording.
If the console does not recognize the file, check the drive format and the spelling and capitalization of the folder and file names. Folder and file names are case-sensitive in the sense that a mismatch will stop recognition, so match them exactly.
Reinstall system software only as a last resort
Reinstallation rewrites the system software from a reinstallation file. Sony’s reinstallation guide states: “Reinstalling your console’s system software deletes all data on your console. Selecting this option should be the last step when troubleshooting.”

If the console can still start and you can reach your saved data, back up first. Copy saved data and other files you need to cloud storage or external storage, as your console’s settings allow. If the reinstallation fails, Sony says the console may need repair.

| Repair Console Storage (PS5) | Storage problems after Safe Mode starts | Sony states it does not erase data |
| Clear System Software Cache or Rebuild Database | Repeated Safe Mode entry or system instability | Not stated as erasing data in Sony’s Safe Mode guidance |
| Update System Software (internet or USB) | Need for a current or matching system software version | Not stated in Sony’s update guide |

When to stop and contact PlayStation Repairs
Contact PlayStation Repairs if the console will not reach Safe Mode after the cable checks and the 20-minute power cycle, or if a reinstallation fails. Sony’s guidance indicates that a failed reinstallation may mean the console needs repair, so continuing to retry the same reinstall rarely helps.
What the official guidance does not cover
Sony’s support pages, checked in October 2026, describe standard recovery on unmodified systems. They do not explain jailbreak states, firmware downgrades, or exploit-based recovery. They also do not publish a failure rate for consoles that fail after a jailbreak, so no reliable frequency figure is available. Menu labels and file requirements can change with system software releases, so compare each step against Sony’s current page before you act on it.
Sony’s pages do not show individual publication dates, so confirm that the instructions match the system software version your console is running.
