What to Do If All Your Minecraft Worlds Disappeared

If all your Minecraft worlds vanished, stop changing the device, identify your edition and platform, and check which documented backup copy exists. Recovery depends on that copy.

If every world has vanished from your Minecraft list, stop changing anything on the affected device, then work out which edition and platform those worlds belonged to. Recovery depends on a surviving copy: a backup made by a route Minecraft’s official help documents for that platform, a Realm backup, or a cloud copy. Official guidance does not promise that a world with no copy can be rebuilt, so the goal of the first hour is to find out which copies exist.

Stop making changes until you have checked

Until you know whether a copy exists, avoid the following:

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the game, clearing its app data, or resetting the device.
  • Continuing to play on the affected profile, since new saves can overwrite the state you need to restore.
  • Deleting files or apps to free storage space on the device where the worlds were kept.

This is a precaution rather than a documented requirement. Minecraft’s help pages describe backups as the recovery route, but they do not address these steps specifically. Each one, however, can remove or overwrite a copy you may still need.

Identify the edition, platform and profile

Minecraft’s Backup & Restore help section is split by platform, and the instructions for one platform do not carry over to another. Answer these four questions before looking for files:

  1. Which edition? Java Edition and Bedrock Edition store and back up worlds differently.
  2. Which device? Windows PC, Android, iPhone or iPad, a game console, or another device. Include any device you used with those worlds, not only the one you are on now.
  3. Which account or profile? Check whether you were signed in with a Microsoft or Xbox account or a local profile, and whether that sign-in has changed.
  4. Where were the worlds? Local to one device, hosted on a Realm, or synced through a cloud feature.

The answers decide which official route applies. The table below summarises the documented routes as of October 2026.

Bedrock on Android

Official instructions describe copying worlds to a computer or to another Android device, but only when File Storage Location was set to External at the time the world was created. The condition is set at creation, so it cannot be changed afterward to bring an existing world into reach. If a world was created with internal storage, the official page does not describe a copy route for it, and you should not assume one exists. Read the full procedure in Save a Backup of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Worlds on Android.

Bedrock on iPhone and iPad

Minecraft Help describes connecting the iOS device to a Mac to make a backup copy. That copy can later be used to restore worlds or to move them to another iOS device. The page does not promise a restore when no such copy was made beforehand, so the practical question is whether a Mac backup existed before the worlds disappeared. The steps are in Save a Backup of Your Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Worlds on Your iPhone or iPad.

Bedrock Realm worlds

Minecraft Help includes a procedure for restoring a Realm world backup, so a missing Realm world is the most directly recoverable case if a backup is present. The Bedrock Edition 26.40 release notes add that Realm Hub can manage automatic and manual saves and can be reached from the in-game pause menu. Check the Realm backups available for the affected Realm before doing anything else. The restore steps are in Restore a Backup Save of a Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Realm World, and the 26.40 changes are in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition 26.40.

Bedrock on Windows, version 26.40

The 26.40 release notes list cloud backup and Cloud Sync support for Windows world data, intended to back up world data and make it accessible across devices on that platform. This is a feature of that version. It does not establish the same behaviour for other Bedrock versions, for Java Edition, or for Windows versions outside the release. If you are on 26.40 or later on Windows, check whether cloud sync was active for the affected worlds. Details are in the 26.40 release notes.

Java Edition and Nintendo Switch

The Backup & Restore section lists backup guidance for Java Edition and cloud save guidance for Nintendo Switch. The detailed steps for these were not verified for this article, so this piece does not give menu paths or file locations for them. Open the relevant article from the Backup & Restore section and follow its steps for your exact device. Do not apply Windows or mobile save locations to Java or console games.

If no copy turns up

If none of the routes above yields a copy, the official instructions do not promise recovery. That does not mean the worlds are permanently gone. A copy may still exist on another device you signed into with the same account, on a Realm you have not checked, or in a cloud location you have not looked at. Treat the search for copies as the next step, and restore only from a copy you can actually confirm.

Prevent a repeat

  • Make a backup with the method documented for your edition and platform before installing updates or changing devices.
  • For Android, note whether File Storage Location is set to External before creating worlds you care about.
  • For Realm worlds, check the saved Realm backups periodically rather than assuming they are kept.
  • On Windows with Bedrock 26.40 or later, confirm that cloud sync is on for the worlds you play.
