Stop eating the candy and do not taste it again to test it. Set it aside, keep its wrapper and identifying details, inspect it without handling it more than necessary, and check official recall and allergy notices. Unusual color, tiny pinholes, a torn wrapper, mold, or an off odor are reasons to discard a treat—not proof that someone deliberately tampered with it.
Appearance, smell, and taste cannot reliably detect every hazard. If anyone becomes ill after eating the candy, contact a health care provider; report suspected tampering or a food complaint through the appropriate regulator.

What to do immediately
1. Stop eating and isolate the piece
Put the unusual candy down and do not offer it to anyone else. Do not take another bite “to see whether it is really bad.” FDA consumer guidance says not to taste a suspect food when deciding whether it is safe. Place the item in a clean container or bag if you can do so without unnecessary contact, and keep it away from other food, children, and pets while you investigate.

If the candy is still in its original package, leave it there. If it is unwrapped, retain any wrapper, outer bag, receipt, or photograph that identifies the product. Do not throw away the only evidence before checking whether a recall or allergy alert applies.

2. Inspect without trying to diagnose it
Look at the wrapper and candy in good light, but do not open additional pieces from the same package merely to compare them. FDA Halloween guidance specifically identifies an unusual appearance or discoloration, tiny pinholes, and tears in wrappers as signs to take seriously. A damaged seal, missing wrapper, mismatched label, or product that does not look like the same candy pictured on its packaging is also a reason to avoid it.
These clues do not prove deliberate tampering. They tell you that the item is not worth the risk. The FDA’s plain-language advice is: “Throw away anything that looks suspicious.”
3. Record the identifying information
Before disposal, write down or photograph the product name, package size, UPC, lot or date code, best-by or use-by date, ingredient and allergen statement, and where and when it was obtained. Keep the wrapper flat enough for the code to be read. Those details are what allow you to distinguish one production lot or distribution area from another.

Which changes are warning signs?
Unusual appearance or discoloration
Color that is markedly different from the rest of the package, a cloudy coating, visible spots, mold-like growth, leaking filling, or a misshapen piece should not be eaten. FDA consumer guidance advises avoiding food that is discolored or moldy. It does not provide a candy-specific visual test that can tell you whether a particular change is harmless, spoiled, contaminated, or intentional. When you cannot explain the change, treat the candy as unsafe and discard it according to any applicable recall notice.
Tiny holes, tears, or a broken seal
Examine the individual wrapper for pinholes, cuts, an open seam, loose folds, or a seal that does not match the others. A tear can result from transport or handling, so it is not evidence of a crime; it is still enough reason not to eat that piece. If several pieces in a sealed bag have damaged wrappers, stop distributing the bag and preserve the package information for a complaint or recall check.
Off odor or an unexpected taste
A sour, chemical, rancid, or otherwise unfamiliar smell is a reason to stop. If you already tasted the candy and it tastes wrong, spit it out, rinse your mouth, and do not taste it again. An acceptable smell or taste does not establish safety: FoodSafety.gov notes that bacteria and viruses that cause foodborne illness may not be visible, smellable, or tasteable. Sensory inspection can identify some obvious problems, but it cannot clear a questionable item.

Check recalls and allergy alerts
Use the exact product details
Search the official FDA recall and safety-alert notices using the product name and the information you recorded. FDA explains that a valid match can depend on several fields:

Read the complete notice at FDA’s food-recall guidance and follow its disposal, return, or refund instructions. Do not eat a product that matches the notice, even if it looks and smells normal. Check undeclared-allergen warnings
A candy can look completely ordinary and still be dangerous to someone with an allergy. Compare its ingredient and “contains” statement with the eater’s known allergies, then check current FDA allergy alerts as well as contamination recalls. On August 31, 2026, FDA published an alert for Crystal Temptations Chocolatey Eyeballs because milk was not declared. That example shows why a person with a milk allergy should verify the label and the notice’s current scope instead of relying on appearance.

Do not assume that removing a visible coating or eating only part of a piece removes the allergen. If the package is covered by an undeclared-allergen alert, follow the notice exactly and keep it away from anyone at risk.
What to do if someone already ate it
Stop exposure and note what happened
Do not serve any more of the candy. Keep the wrapper, product code, and remaining pieces so a clinician or regulator can identify what was consumed. Note approximately how much was eaten and when, but do not delay care while collecting information.

FDA’s consumer advice is to contact a health care provider when someone becomes ill after eating a suspect food. Tell the provider the product name, lot or date code, time of exposure, amount eaten, and symptoms. If an allergy is known or suspected, mention it immediately. Follow the clinician’s instructions rather than trying another taste or home test.

Do not wait for symptoms to “prove” contamination
The absence of immediate symptoms does not certify a product as safe, and a delayed illness does not by itself identify the cause. Keep the product information available until you have decided whether a recall, allergy alert, or complaint report is appropriate.

Food complaint or suspected tampering
FDA lists suspected product tampering among the problems it wants consumers to report. Use the instructions in FDA 101: How to Use the Consumer Complaint System and MedWatch. Provide clear photographs when safe, the exact label and code information, where you obtained the candy, and what you observed. If the issue involves a local event, retailer, or distributor, contact the relevant local health department as well.
Preserve information without overhandling
Keep the package and remaining candy in a sealed container if authorities or a health professional ask for it. Do not repeatedly open, smell, or move a questionable item, and do not mail it anywhere unless an official instruction tells you how. Wash your hands after handling a damaged wrapper or spilled contents.

A strange look does not identify the cause
Some visual changes can have ordinary explanations, such as heat, age, or shipping damage, but the available FDA and FoodSafety.gov guidance does not give consumers a reliable way to distinguish those explanations from contamination or tampering by sight or taste. Avoid diagnosing a piece from a photograph or a single bite. The safe decision for an unexplained change is to stop eating it, check notices, and discard or report it as directed.
A rumor is not a recall
FDA says deliberate food tampering intended to cause major disease outbreaks is rare, particularly in the United States. That general statement should not be used to dismiss a specific damaged item, nor should an alarming social-media post be treated as proof that all Halloween candy is dangerous. Verify claims against an official FDA notice, a manufacturer announcement, or a local health authority.

Safer Halloween handling habits
- Inspect commercially wrapped treats before handing them out or allowing children to eat them.

- When one piece is suspicious, remove that piece and pause distribution of the package while you check its lot code and current notices.
- Use official recall and complaint pages instead of forwarding unverified claims about widespread poisoning.
The practical rule is simple: an unexplained change is a reason to stop, not a puzzle to solve with another bite. Protect the identifying information, verify official alerts, and get medical advice if anyone becomes ill.
