If you still control the email address linked to your PlayStation Network account, secure that mailbox and use Sony’s account recovery flow. If the email, sign-in ID, online ID, password, or verification method was changed or is no longer accessible, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant instead of repeatedly requesting a reset that may go to the attacker.
First, choose the recovery route that matches your situation
| What you can access or recognize | What to do |
|---|---|
| You control the email linked to PSN, and your account details appear unchanged | Secure the mailbox, then use Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account in PlayStation Account Management. |
| You cannot access that email, or you do not recognize a sign-in ID, online ID, or password change | Contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant. Sony says, “If you don’t recognize a sign-in ID, online ID and/or password change on your account, please contact us using our Online Assistant.” |
| You can reach the account but cannot complete 2-step verification | Use a saved backup code if available. If you have neither a code nor access to the phone or authenticator method, contact Support. |
A failed sign-in does not by itself prove a hack. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also lists incorrect sign-in email, outdated console system software, network problems, and account suspension as possible causes. If your details were changed without permission, treat that as a takeover and use the support route above. Sony account recovery · Sony sign-in troubleshooting
Secure the email account linked to PSN
Use a trusted device to check whether you can still sign in to the linked email account. If it may also be compromised, regain control and change its password before relying on an emailed PSN reset link. Choose a strong, unique password for the mailbox: access to email can let someone reset other services. If you cannot secure that email account, the PSN reset link may not be usable; contact PlayStation Support instead. Sony security best practices
Recover PSN when you still control the linked email
- Open PlayStation Account Management directly.
- Choose Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account, enter the sign-in ID (your email address), and follow the on-screen steps.
- Open the secure link Sony sends and follow the instructions to set a new password. Sony says the email can take a few minutes to arrive; it does not give a guaranteed recovery time.
Sony’s password guidance recommends using uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Make the new password unique to PSN, rather than reusing the mailbox password or one used on another service. Account recovery steps

Reach Support through an official PlayStation page opened directly; do not use account-recovery links in unsolicited messages. Sony’s recovery and sign-in guidance identifies changed account details and loss of email access as cases for Support. PlayStation account recovery
If the problem is 2-step verification
Sony supports 2-step verification (2SV) by SMS or authenticator app and recommends recording the backup codes shown during setup. If you saved one, at the verification prompt choose Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code. Sony provides ten backup codes when setting up 2SV; each code can be used once.

- Set a unique PSN password or use a passkey, then review your security settings and enable 2SV if appropriate. Keep any backup codes somewhere secure and separate from the device used for sign-in.
- Keep the linked email protected with its own unique password. Do not share credentials, scan QR codes sent by another person, or trust direct messages claiming that your account has been reported; Sony identifies these as security risks. Sony security guidance
Sony notes that the PlayStation Store “Require Password at Checkout” option is incompatible with passkeys. If you use a passkey, do not rely on that checkout-password option as an additional control. Sony Account & Security help

Review purchases and report charges you do not recognize
Check your PlayStation transaction history, then use Sony’s compromised-account or unauthorized-payment support route if a transaction still appears unauthorized. Some unfamiliar entries may be subscription renewals, family purchases, or duplicate transactions, so check those explanations before treating a charge as fraud. If your payment card was used without permission, contact its issuer as appropriate. Sony and the issuer determine which remedies are available; no particular refund or outcome is guaranteed.
