First, check the Recycle Bin on Windows or Trash on Mac, then make sure you are checking the active Sims 4 user-data folder—not the game’s installation folder. The usual location is Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods, though OneDrive or iCloud can redirect Documents. If no copy survives in a bin, backup, or synced location, recreate the folder and reinstall the mod files; an empty folder cannot restore deleted mods.
1. Check the Recycle Bin or Trash
Before creating a replacement folder, open your operating system’s Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (Mac). If the Mods folder or its contents are there, restore them. Leave the bin unemptied while you search so you do not remove a recoverable copy.
2. Confirm the active Sims 4 user-data folder
The game reads mods from its user-data directory, not from the folder where the game itself is installed. The usual path is Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods. Open Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 and look for Mods.
If it is not there, search your computer for The Sims 4 or a filename you remember from a mod. You may have checked a different Documents folder, or the game’s files may be in another location.

3. Check OneDrive, iCloud, and other synced Documents locations
Documents may be redirected or synced, so the folder you opened manually might not be the one the game is using. On Windows, check Documents inside OneDrive if its backup is enabled. On Mac, check the active Documents location, including iCloud Drive if you use it. Compare the path containing the Sims 4 user-data folder with the path you originally checked. If the files are present in the synced or online location but not locally, download or restore them before changing sync settings. Copy any files you want to keep before disabling sync or moving folders.

4. Restore from a backup, if you have one
EA’s backup and reset instructions explain how to back up and restore the Sims 4 folder. If your backup contains the missing mods, copy its Mods subfolder into the active The Sims 4 folder.
If you are restoring the entire Sims 4 folder, first preserve the current one elsewhere. Replacing it without a copy could overwrite newer saves, settings, or other user data.

5. Rebuild the folder if no copy survives
- Open the active
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4user-data folder. - Create a folder named
Mods. - Put back the package and script mod files you still have, following each creator’s installation instructions.
- For missing files, download them again from their original creators when possible.
Creating Mods restores the folder structure only; it does not reconstruct its deleted contents. EA’s guidance documents restoring a backup and checking file locations, but it does not provide a way to retrieve permanently deleted Mods files from EA servers. EA forum helper guidance also says EA does not support cloud storage for saves or other user data, so EA servers are not a fallback copy of your mods or saves.

Keep a separate backup for next time
EA’s backup guide describes copying the Sims 4 folder to another location. Keeping a separate copy means a later folder deletion does not leave you dependent on the Recycle Bin or Trash. A backup helps only if it was made before the files went missing.
