Downloading a suspicious game file does not, by itself, prove your device is infected. Don’t open it. If you already ran or installed it, stop entering passwords or other sensitive information on that device, disconnect it from the network if you suspect infection, and follow the steps below.
If you downloaded the file but haven’t opened it
- Don’t run it. Avoid opening the file or trying to launch the game, even if the download page claims it is a leak, patch, or early build.
- Scan the file or its download location. Use the security software already installed on your device. If it flags the file, remove or quarantine it using that software.
- Keep protections enabled. Don’t disable security features or add an antivirus exclusion just to launch the file. Microsoft explains that exclusions leave files or folders out of antivirus scanning, while its guidance for unwanted software recommends scanning instead: Protect your PC from unwanted software.
If you only downloaded the file and did not open it, that alone does not establish that your device is compromised. Avoid interacting with it and let your security software check it.
If you opened or installed it, or your device is acting strangely
- Stop using the device for sensitive activity. Don’t sign in to accounts or enter financial, personal, or other sensitive information on it. The FTC recommends avoiding sensitive logins on a device suspected of malware: Malware: How To Protect Against, Detect, and Remove It.
- Disconnect it if you suspect infection. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug its Ethernet cable. The FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance also recommends disconnecting an infected device from the network: Cybersecurity for Small Business.
- Update legitimate security software and scan. On Windows, Microsoft recommends updating security intelligence and running a full scan. If unwanted software persists, Microsoft describes an offline scan as another option: Protect your PC from unwanted software.
- Get trusted help if the problem remains. If security software cannot remove the threat or the device keeps behaving abnormally, contact the device manufacturer or a technical support provider you already know and trust.
A clean scan is useful, but it is not proof that every possible compromise is absent. The consumer guidance cited here does not establish detection guarantees for any particular fake game leak.
Secure accounts from a device you trust
Use a separate device you believe is clean to change important passwords and enable two-factor authentication. Prioritize email and gaming accounts, then financial and other accounts whose credentials you entered on the affected device. The FTC recommends changing passwords and turning on two-factor authentication after suspected malware: its malware guidance.
