If you downloaded a purported GTA 6 build, don’t open or run it. Delete it if it has not been opened, then scan your device if you want to check for malware. If you ran the file on Windows, stop interacting with it, update Microsoft Defender, and run a full scan. A scan can help detect malware; it cannot prove that a file is an authentic or safe game build.
First, work out what happened
The right response depends on whether the file was only downloaded or whether you opened or ran it. A download sitting unopened is not the same exposure as an installer you executed. In either case, do not follow instructions to disable antivirus or bypass a Windows security warning. Microsoft recommends downloading software from trusted sources and keeping security protection current.

If you downloaded the file but did not open it
- Do not open the file, launch it, or run its installer.
- Remove it from your browser’s download list or delete it using your file manager.
- If you want to check the device, update its security protection and run a scan. Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software recommends trusted download sources and updated protection: Protect your PC from unwanted software.
Do not upload a potentially sensitive file to an arbitrary scanning website. The evidence available here does not establish that any particular purported GTA 6 file is genuine, or that a scan result can authenticate it.

If you opened or ran it on Windows
- Stop interacting with the file and close its installer or window. Do not approve additional prompts, install extra components, or change security settings at its request.
- Open Windows Security and check that Microsoft Defender protection and security intelligence are up to date.

- If a threat is found, follow the security product’s quarantine or removal instructions. Some detections require you to take an action rather than being handled automatically.
Microsoft notes that malware can be bundled with downloads from third-party sites or peer-to-peer networks. Its guidance also warns about unknown Office active content and removable drives, so do not open related files or connect unfamiliar storage just because they came with the download: How malware can infect your PC.

If detections persist or return
Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, save your open work, and run Microsoft Defender Offline. This scan runs outside the usual Windows environment and restarts the PC, so save work first. Microsoft recommends it for recurring malware; it is a deeper check, not a guarantee that the device is threat-free. See Troubleshoot problems with detecting and removing malware.
If the same threat appears again after removal, treat that as a sign that it may be hiding or reinstalling, and use the Offline scan guidance. Do not treat a clean result as proof that the downloaded file is safe or genuine.

If files were damaged or the problem is severe
Microsoft says irreversible changes caused by malware may require resetting or reinstalling Windows. Where possible, restore files from a backup made before the infection and stored externally. A backup left on the affected PC could also have been changed; an external drive is a recovery source, not a way to disinfect the computer. What these steps can—and cannot—tell you
- A scan can identify threats that the security software detects; it cannot establish that a purported game build is authentic.
- Defender Offline is useful when malware persists or returns, but no scan result guarantees that no threat exists.
- The recovery and Defender Offline instructions above are Windows-specific. Microsoft’s scan-start guidance also covers macOS and Android, but the full recovery steps cited here do not apply to those systems.
