If someone changed the email or password on your Rockstar Games account, check the old email inbox first. Rockstar may have sent an account-specific rollback link that can undo an unauthorized email change. If you cannot use that mailbox, recover it with the email provider and then contact Rockstar Support from an address previously linked to the account. Once you regain access, replace reused passwords, review account activity and connected services, and enable 2-Step Verification.
Start with the recovery path that matches your situation
Do not begin by repeatedly requesting password resets if the attacker changed the account email. A password reset addresses password access; it does not automatically restore an altered email address. Use the route that matches the evidence you have.

If the account email was changed
Search the old inbox immediately
Look in the inbox, spam or junk folder, and any routing or forwarding folders for a message from [email protected] with the subject “Rockstar Games Email Changed.” Rockstar says this message contains a link specific to your account that rolls back the email change.

When the rollback link works
After the rollback, sign in using the restored address and immediately change the password. If the attacker also changed other details, record what you see before making further changes: unfamiliar devices, new third-party connections, or other security settings can help Rockstar investigate suspicious activity.
When no message appears
Check every folder, including spam, quarantine, automatic forwarding destinations, and rules that may have moved or deleted messages. Confirm that you are checking the exact address that was linked before the takeover. If the old mailbox is still under your control but Rockstar’s message never arrives, use Rockstar’s account-support process and explain that the email address was changed without authorization.
If you cannot access the old email account
Recover the mailbox with its provider first
Rockstar directs players who cannot use the previously linked mailbox to contact the email provider. Use the provider’s account-recovery, identity-verification, and stolen-account procedures. Secure the mailbox before attempting Rockstar recovery: change its password, remove unfamiliar recovery addresses or phone numbers, revoke unknown sessions, and inspect forwarding rules.
A compromised email account can let an attacker intercept Rockstar reset messages even after you change the game-account password. If the provider cannot restore the mailbox, keep records of the old address and any provider case number for your Rockstar support request.

Use a previously linked address for Rockstar Support
Rockstar says it may be able to restore a previously linked email when a support request is submitted using that previously linked address. This is not a promise of restoration. Rockstar also says it cannot change account details when there was no prior linked email or when the request comes from an address that was never linked to the account.
Give the support form complete, consistent information. Explain when you noticed the takeover, whether the email changed, whether you can access the old mailbox, and which recovery steps you already tried. Do not send passwords, 2-Step Verification codes, QR codes, or other secrets in a ticket.
If you only forgot the Rockstar password
Use Rockstar’s official Recovering Rockstar Games Account Password reset flow. Enter the email currently linked to the account and follow the message sent to that address.
- Request the reset from Rockstar’s sign-in page.
- Check the inbox, spam, and junk folders for the reset message.
- Confirm that the message is from an official Rockstar domain before opening it.
- Create a new, unique password that you do not use on any other service.
- Sign in and review security settings and connected services.
If no reset message arrives, verify the spelling of the address and inspect filtering or forwarding rules. If the email address was changed by an attacker, stop using the ordinary password-reset route and follow the changed-email process instead. A password reset alone does not reverse an account-email change.

If 2-Step Verification prevents sign-in
When you know the password but cannot complete 2-Step Verification because you lost access to the account email, use Rockstar’s No longer have access to email to complete 2-Step Verification sign-in support ticket flow. Provide the information requested in the form and describe the loss of email access clearly.
Do not send an authenticator code to anyone who contacts you. Rockstar’s support guidance warns against sharing passwords, QR codes, PINs, or 2-Step Verification codes. A person who asks for one of these is not helping you prove ownership safely.
How to tell whether the account was compromised
An unexpected password failure is not the only sign of a takeover. Check for changes you did not make in each of these areas:
- Email: an email-change notice, a new address on the account, or messages disappearing through an unfamiliar rule or forwarding destination.
- Devices and sessions: unfamiliar sign-ins, devices, locations, or sessions that remain active after you changed the password.
- Connected services: third-party accounts or applications you do not recognize.
- Support contact: messages or tickets you did not submit.
- Game activity: profile, character, inventory, or other account changes you did not authorize.
Report suspicious activity to Rockstar Support. Keep screenshots, dates, sender addresses, and relevant notifications, but remove passwords and verification codes from anything you upload.

Secure the account immediately after recovery
Use a password that is unique to Rockstar
Rockstar’s protection guidance advises against password reuse. If the compromised password was used anywhere else, change it on those services too, starting with email, payment, and other accounts that could be used to reset one another. A long, unique password stored in a reputable password manager is easier to maintain than a short password reused across services.
Turn on 2-Step Verification
Rockstar describes 2-Step Verification, also called two-factor authentication or MFA, as the best way to secure the account. Its setup supports a mobile or browser-based authenticator app, and the account email must be verified first.
- Verify that the Rockstar account email is yours and secured.
- Open Rockstar account security settings and choose the 2-Step Verification setup option.
- Use a supported mobile or browser-based authenticator app to scan the displayed QR code or enter the setup key.
- Enter the generated verification code to finish enrollment.
- Store any recovery information Rockstar provides in a safe place separate from the game device.
Secure the linked email with its own unique password and 2-Step Verification. The email account is a recovery channel; leaving it unprotected can undo the work you just completed.

Review Rockstar’s connected applications and unlink anything unfamiliar. Sign out unknown sessions where the account interface allows it, then revisit the list after changing the password. Recheck the email account for unfamiliar forwarding rules, recovery methods, and active sessions.

Scams that commonly follow an account takeover
Rockstar warns about social engineering in which someone impersonates the player to support, phishing messages that pretend to be official, and third-party services that request credentials. Attackers may contact you after seeing a public post about the compromised account.
- Check the sender domain and the destination domain before replying, downloading an attachment, or entering credentials.
- Navigate to Rockstar’s support or sign-in pages yourself instead of using an unexpected link.
- Never share a password, QR code, PIN, or 2-Step Verification code.
- Do not post login details, recovery messages, or screenshots containing security information on forums or social media.
- Avoid cracked games and other untrusted downloads that can install credential-stealing malware.
- Keep your operating system, browser, apps, and antivirus or anti-malware software updated.
What Rockstar’s process does—and does not—promise
Rockstar’s support materials, including Changes to the email address linked to your Rockstar Games account (updated July 17, 2026), describe the old-inbox rollback and the previously linked-address requirement. They do not promise a specific response time, guarantee that every account can be restored, or describe an appeal for every possible account lock.
The rollback link depends on access to the old inbox. The support fallback may depend on submitting the request from an address previously linked to the account. Treat any claimed guaranteed recovery time or guaranteed outcome as a warning sign.
A practical recovery checklist
- Stop responding to anyone asking for your credentials or verification codes.
- Search the previous inbox, spam, and routing folders for “Rockstar Games Email Changed” from
[email protected]. - Use the account-specific rollback link if you still control that mailbox.
- If the mailbox is inaccessible, recover it through the email provider and secure it.
- Submit Rockstar’s support request from a previously linked address whenever possible.
- Use the password-reset flow only when the account email remains yours.
- Use the dedicated sign-in ticket if lost email access prevents 2-Step Verification.
- After recovery, change reused passwords, inspect devices and third-party connections, and report suspicious activity.
- Verify the account email and enable 2-Step Verification with a mobile or browser-based authenticator app.
