Online backgammon usually does not roll a physical die on your phone or computer. A server-side random-number generator (RNG) selects values, software converts those values into six-sided results, and the client displays the dice. Fairness therefore depends on more than whether a screen animation looks convincing: the generator must make future results difficult to predict, the conversion must give each face the intended probability, and the operator should provide evidence that players can inspect.
What actually happens when you click Roll?
In a typical online game, the visible dice are the last step in a server transaction. Your device sends a move or roll request. Server software obtains random data, maps it to die faces, records the result, and returns the outcome to the game client. The client then animates or displays the two dice.

This separation matters. An animation can be slowed, repeated, or redesigned without changing the random process, while a perfectly smooth animation does not prove that the underlying result was selected fairly. The important questions concern the server process, its inputs, its mapping rules, and the audit trail.

RNG does not automatically mean “fair”
An RNG is a mechanism that produces values used to determine an outcome. NIST’s SP 800-90A describes deterministic random bit generators based on hash functions or block ciphers. Such a generator can be deterministic internally while still being practically unpredictable to someone who does not know its secret state. That general cryptographic description is background technology, not a certification of any particular backgammon site.

A fair implementation needs at least two properties:
- Unpredictability: seeing previous rolls should not let a player feasibly calculate the next one.
- Correct distribution: over many independent draws, each face of a six-sided die should occur with its intended probability.
One property cannot substitute for the other. A sequence may have an even-looking histogram but still be predictable, or be difficult to predict while using a biased conversion that favors some faces.
How random bytes become numbers from 1 to 6
The generator may produce random bits or bytes rather than a ready-made die face. The platform then needs a mapping step. A careless mapping can introduce bias even when the source bytes are uniform.

Suppose a program takes one uniformly distributed byte, with possible values 0 through 255, and computes the value modulo 6. There are 256 possible inputs, but 256 is not divisible by 6. Some remainders would therefore receive 43 inputs and others 42. The resulting faces would differ slightly in probability.
Rejection sampling
Tournament Land’s public implementation uses rejection sampling. It discards byte values 252, 253, 254, and 255, leaving 252 accepted values. Because 252 divides evenly by 6, each remainder corresponds to exactly 42 accepted byte values. The remaining value is then converted to one of the six faces.

This is one documented way to avoid modulo bias, not a rule that every online platform must use. Other mathematically correct mappings are possible. The key is that the conversion step must be specified and analyzed rather than assumed to be harmless.
What “cryptographically secure” means in this context
When a platform says it uses a cryptographically secure RNG, it generally means that outputs are designed to resist prediction even when an observer knows the algorithm and has seen earlier outputs. The secret state, seed, or entropy inputs must remain protected, and the system must avoid leaking information through logs, timing, or game data.
Backgammon.com’s Fair Dice page says its rolls are generated on servers with a cryptographically secure RNG and that no match information is provided to the generator. Those are the platform’s stated design details. They describe an intended separation between game state and randomness; they do not, by themselves, establish how every other site operates.
Backgammon Galaxy’s help article, modified May 20, 2025, likewise says it uses a cryptographically secure RNG for all rolls. The date matters because software and documentation can change. A current claim should be checked against the platform’s latest help material.
Why fair dice can look streaky
Random draws are not required to alternate between high and low numbers. Short sequences naturally contain clusters. With two independent six-sided dice, any particular ordered pair has probability 1/36, and a double has probability 6/36, or 1/6, on a roll. Several doubles in a row are unusual but possible; they are not evidence of manipulation by themselves.

Backgammon players also notice rolls that change a game dramatically: repeated hits, escapes, or rolls that complete a prime. Ordinary rolls leave little memory, while emotionally important sequences are easy to recall. Backgammon.com warns that certified randomness can still produce streaks and says its match analysis separates decision quality from roll luck. Those explanations are operator statements, not independent psychological studies.
Why a small sample proves very little
A personal spreadsheet or a profile histogram can show what happened in the recorded sample. It cannot establish that the generator was independent, that the sample was large enough to detect a small bias, or that no implementation bug affected the data. A suspicious-looking chart is a reason to ask for more evidence, not a statistical verdict.
Backgammon Galaxy says it provides dice statistics on player profiles. Statistics are useful for transparency and self-checking, but they are not equivalent to an independently reproducible roll log or a laboratory examination of the generator.
Commit-reveal systems: making rolls checkable after a match
A commit-reveal design lets observers verify that a platform did not change a hidden seed after seeing the game. Before play, the server creates a secret seed and publishes a cryptographic hash of it. Publishing the hash is the “commit” step: the seed is concealed, but changing it later would produce a different hash.
After the match, the server reveals the seed. A verifier hashes the revealed value and checks that it matches the original commitment. If the rolls were derived deterministically from that seed, player-provided seeds, and a counter or nonce, the verifier can recompute the complete sequence.

Tournament Land’s repository describes this pattern with a nonce, HMAC-SHA256 derivation, rejection sampling, and an offline verifier. The repository also claims that the code is used in production. That is the project’s own claim; a reader should inspect the implementation, deployment details, and the exact data recorded for a particular match before treating it as independently demonstrated.
What commit-reveal can and cannot prove
- It can show that a revealed seed matches a prior commitment.
- It can show that recorded rolls follow the published derivation and mapping rules.
- It cannot prove that the server selected the initial seed with sufficient entropy unless seed generation is also documented and audited.
- It does not automatically prove that a client seed, nonce, or counter was handled correctly in every match.
How the documented platforms describe their dice
| Platform or project | What it publicly describes | Evidence type and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Backgammon.com | Server-side cryptographically secure RNG; no match information supplied to the generator. It reports GLI testing in July 2026 and WBGF due diligence in August 2026. | Platform documentation and reported evaluations. Its certification explanation says GLI examined unpredictability, uniform distribution, and statistical randomness, with a Certificate of Integrity hosted by GLI. Verify the certificate’s current validity, scope, and covered system. |
| Backgammon Galaxy | Cryptographically secure RNG for all rolls; dice statistics available on player profiles. | Help-center article modified May 20, 2025. The statement and profile statistics are different forms of evidence and do not amount to a public recomputation system. |
| Tournament Land | Post-match commit-reveal, nonce-based HMAC-SHA256 derivation, rejection sampling, and an offline verifier. | Public repository documentation that claims production use. The code and deployment claim should be checked for the relevant version and match. |
These descriptions cannot be generalized to every online backgammon service. They also should not be ranked as if a histogram, an operator statement, open verification code, and an independent laboratory certificate were interchangeable.
A practical framework for judging dice transparency
If you are deciding whether a platform gives you enough evidence, evaluate separate questions rather than searching for one magic fairness label.
- Where is the roll generated? Look for a clear statement that identifies server-side generation and explains what the client receives.
- Is the generator described? “Random” is vague. Look for the RNG class, protection against prediction, and information about seeding or secret state.
- How are values mapped to six faces? Documentation should address modulo bias or provide an equivalent unbiased method.
- Can you inspect outcomes? Match logs, downloadable records, or profile statistics help you see what was recorded, but they do not independently prove the generator’s integrity.
- Can a third party recompute rolls? A commit-reveal protocol with public derivation code provides a stronger after-the-fact check than a chart alone.
- Is there dated independent testing? Identify the laboratory, the test date, the exact product or RNG covered, and whether the certificate remains valid. A date attached to a claim is not the same as a permanent guarantee.
Questions to ask when a certificate is mentioned
- What organization issued it?
- Does it cover the live backgammon service, a reusable RNG component, or only a test environment?
- Which properties were tested: unpredictability, distribution, statistical randomness, or all three?
- What version and period were examined?
- Is the certificate publicly accessible and still current?
Backgammon.com reports GLI testing in July 2026 and WBGF due diligence in August 2026. Treat those as time-stamped platform claims until the certificate and its scope are inspected directly.

Common misconceptions and troubleshooting
“The dice are rigged because I lost several games in a row.”
A losing streak combines game decisions, opponent strength, match length, and random variation. Record a large, well-defined sample before drawing a statistical conclusion, and separate the quality of your moves from the luck of the rolls.

“My chart has roughly equal numbers, so the RNG is proven fair.”
Equal frequencies are compatible with a fair process, but they do not demonstrate independence, secure seeding, or the absence of selective logging. A chart is descriptive evidence, not a complete audit.
“A secure RNG must produce balanced short sequences.”
Security concerns predictability; probability concerns long-run distribution. Neither requirement says that every short block will contain equal counts of each face.
“The animation determines the result.”
On a server-generated system, the animation displays an outcome already selected by the server. A visual effect may be synchronized with the response, but it is not the evidence of randomness.
What evidence would be strongest?
The most persuasive transparency package combines several layers: a clear server-side design explanation, an unbiased mapping method, protected and documented seeding, complete match records, reproducible post-match verification, and an independent audit whose date and scope are public. No single layer answers every question.
For ordinary players, the useful distinction is between trusting a statement and checking a result. An operator’s documentation tells you what it says it does. Player statistics show recorded outcomes. Open commit-reveal code lets you recompute a sequence. Laboratory certification adds an external examination, provided the certificate actually covers the live system and remains current.
Keeping the claims current
RNG implementations, certificates, and help articles can change without changing the game interface. The platform descriptions above were observed on October 13, 2026. Before relying on a certification or verifier, check the latest certificate, documentation date, repository version, and the scope of the system being discussed. The available platform materials do not establish that all online backgammon sites use the same design or that any one statistical test proves an implementation fair.
