First identify the platform, storefront, country and account used for the purchase. Sign in to that exact account, check its transaction history and library, and follow the platform’s current redownload procedure. A game disappearing from sale does not automatically mean previous buyers have lost download access; conversely, a successful redownload does not guarantee that the game’s online features still work.
If the purchase is missing, the download service has ended, or the game is faulty or unavailable contrary to the purchase terms, preserve your records and contact the seller or platform. Refund eligibility and consumer-law remedies depend on the storefront, purchase date, download status, fault, contract and local law.

Start by identifying exactly what stopped working
“No longer available” can describe several different situations. Diagnose the situation before deleting anything or making a refund request.

Delisting is not the same as a redownload shutdown
A publisher can stop new sales while the platform continues delivering copies to people who already bought the game. There is no universal rule requiring every storefront to handle delisted titles the same way. Treat the store’s current support statement for your exact title and platform as controlling, rather than assuming that another console’s policy applies.

Download access, installation and playability are separate
Three questions must be answered independently: can the account obtain the files, can the system install and authenticate them, and do all advertised features still operate? A game can remain downloadable after online play, messaging, leaderboards or other server-dependent functions have ended. A local campaign may continue while online modes do not.
Collect the details support will need
Before troubleshooting, create a short record. It prevents an account or regional mismatch from being mistaken for a service shutdown.
- Exact title, edition, bundle or DLC name, including any remastered or deluxe version.
- Console, PC storefront or other platform, and the country or region where the purchase was made.
- Account email or username used at checkout; do not assume the account currently signed in is the buyer.
- Purchase date, order number, receipt email and the payment record, with sensitive card details redacted.
- Whether the game was ever downloaded, installed or streamed on this account.
- Exact error text, error code, screenshot and the time the failure occurred.
- Whether the title is visible in the library, hidden, already installed, or shown with a price.
- Any official notice about a storefront closure, account migration, region change, license restriction or server shutdown.
Keep copies of receipts and support conversations. Do not delete an installed copy while investigating; an installed game may be usable even when a new download is unavailable, subject to the platform’s authentication rules.

Use this redownload sequence
- Sign out of unrelated accounts. Sign in with the account that appears on the receipt. Family, child, work and secondary accounts may see the console but not own its licenses.
- Open purchase history. Find the transaction, not just the store listing. Confirm the exact edition, region and platform. A listing that displays a price usually indicates that the currently signed-in account has not been recognized as the purchaser; verify the receipt before buying again.
- Search the complete library. Check all software, archived or hidden items, downloads, subscriptions and previously purchased content. Also check whether the title is already installed under another storage location or user profile.
- Follow the platform’s current redownload path. Menu names change, so use the seller’s support instructions for the current system. Do not substitute instructions from a different console generation or storefront.
- Refresh the license or entitlement only through official settings. If the platform offers a restore-licenses, redownload, or account-sync function, run it while signed in to the purchasing account. Avoid unofficial license tools or modified clients that can invalidate an account.
- Retry after ordinary checks. Confirm the system is updated, has enough storage, has a stable connection and is using the correct date and region settings. Record any new error rather than repeatedly purchasing the title.
- Escalate with evidence. If the title remains absent, give support the transaction number, account, region, platform, error and prior-download status and ask whether the entitlement remains active.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo’s support procedures are specific to Nintendo Accounts and virtual game cards. A title marked “Purchased” belongs to the Nintendo Account currently in use. Nintendo’s steps include locating the software in All Software or loading its corresponding virtual game card. If software or a virtual game card was hidden, it may need to be unhidden before it appears. When a previously purchased title displays a price, Nintendo advises checking the purchase history or receipt and confirming that the purchasing account is signed in. These instructions apply to Switch-family systems, not to PlayStation, Xbox, PC or other storefronts.
Check for account, region and visibility problems
The receipt belongs to another account
Search every account that could have made the purchase, including an older email address. A console’s primary user, family manager and purchaser can be different people. Support generally cannot move a digital entitlement simply because the console changed hands.
The title is hidden or represented by a virtual game card
Some systems separate the library view from the location where a license is currently loaded. Inspect hidden software, archived items and virtual game-card menus before concluding that the purchase disappeared.

The game is already installed
Look on every internal and removable storage location and under every user profile. If the installed copy launches, do not remove it while you determine whether the storefront still supports a fresh download. An installed copy may still require periodic account authentication or a functioning publisher server.
The purchase and console regions differ
Region changes, account-country settings and imported copies can affect store visibility, DLC compatibility and payment history. Tell support both the country where the transaction occurred and the country currently assigned to the account. Do not buy a second regional edition until compatibility is confirmed.
Find out whether the delivery or online service ended
Search the platform’s official notices for the exact storefront and title. Look for four different events:

- Sales closure: new customers can no longer buy the title.
- Redownload closure: existing purchasers can no longer obtain the files.
- Authentication or account migration: an older license system was replaced or a service moved accounts.
- Online-feature shutdown: servers for multiplayer or connected features stopped operating.
These events can occur on different dates. A notice that says “store closed” may still promise a limited redownload period, while a server shutdown may leave the download available but remove online functions. Record the notice’s wording and effective date; “for the foreseeable future” is not a permanent guarantee.

Nintendo ended Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop sales on March 27, 2023. In its discontinuation Q&A, Nintendo said: “Even after March 27, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” That statement illustrates why a delisting alone cannot answer a previous buyer’s redownload question.
The same Q&A states: “As of April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication has ended for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family software.” Thus, a purchaser may still be able to redownload and update software while losing online play and other connected functions. The statement does not promise that redownloads will remain available indefinitely.

Contact the seller or platform support effectively
Use the official support channel for the storefront that processed the payment. State the outcome you want—restored entitlement, a working redownload, an explanation of a service closure, or a refund review—rather than sending only “the game is gone.” Include:
- Order number and receipt date.
- Purchasing account identifier.
- Title, edition, platform and country.
- Whether it was previously downloaded, installed or streamed.
- Error text and the troubleshooting steps already completed.
- The date you first noticed the problem and any relevant closure announcement.
Ask support to answer three specific questions: Is the purchase still attached to this account? Does the platform still provide redownloads for this title in this region? If not, what remedy or escalation route is available? Keep the case number and the agent’s written response.
Refunds and consumer-law remedies
Refund rules are conditional. A delisting by itself does not establish an automatic refund, and a platform’s voluntary policy may be narrower than rights granted by local law.

Apply promptly because voluntary refund windows can be short. If a platform rejects the request, consult your country’s consumer-protection authority or qualified legal adviser with the receipt, terms, closure notice and support correspondence. Do not present a general EU statement as a legal determination for your individual purchase.
If support confirms that redownloads are no longer offered
Ask for the exact end date, the contractual basis and any transition period. If the game remains installed, avoid uninstalling it while you assess your options. Check whether updates, patches, authentication or DLC depend on a service that has also ended. Where the platform offers a lawful export, backup or transfer process, follow that process; do not rely on unofficial copies or account modifications.
For future purchases, save receipts and platform notices, keep a downloaded title installed when the terms permit it, and note whether the game depends on publisher servers. These steps cannot restore a withdrawn entitlement, but they make an account dispute and any refund or consumer-rights claim easier to document.
