First check whether the game is running directly on Steam Frame or streaming from a PC. Steam Frame supports standalone play but is designed as a streaming-first headset, and its Standalone Verified rating assesses the standalone experience—not every PC-streaming session, game update, scene, or personal setup. Test and troubleshoot the mode where the problem actually occurs.
What Steam Frame Standalone Verified does—and doesn’t—mean
Valve’s June 4, 2026 announcement describes Standalone Verified as a way to identify Steam games, including VR and non-VR titles, that work well on Steam Frame without a PC running the game. The review focuses on the out-of-box standalone experience: default graphics performance, legible text and interface elements on the headset display, and a usable default configuration for Steam Frame Controllers. Valve summarizes the criteria this way: “The default graphics configuration needs to perform well, text and UI elements need to be clear and legible on the built-in display, and the default controller configuration needs to work well with the Steam Frame Controllers.”
That scope matters when diagnosing a disappointing result. The rating is not a guarantee that every update, scene, game mode, or user configuration will behave perfectly. Nor does standalone verification establish how well a game performs when it is streamed from a PC, because the game is executing along a different path.
Valve’s developer compatibility guidance adds detail about controller support and default configurations, including access to game content and prompts that match the active physical controller input. It also covers standalone performance and explains that Proton—the compatibility layer used to run many Windows games on Linux-based SteamOS—can be relevant to a game’s compatibility. These developer-facing criteria are useful context, but they are not a consumer troubleshooting checklist.

Start by identifying where the game is running
Steam Frame can run games standalone or stream them from a PC. Those modes use different execution paths, so identifying the mode is the first useful diagnostic step. If the issue appears in only one mode, that points toward a difference in the relevant path; treating that as a clue is practical troubleshooting, not a Valve-published rule.
- Confirm the mode. Determine whether the game is installed and running on the headset, or running on a PC and being streamed to Steam Frame.
- Reproduce the symptom in that same mode. Note the game, whether you are playing its VR or non-VR mode, what happens, and where in the game it occurs. Record whether the problem began after a game or system update, if you know.
- Change one comparison at a time. If available, compare the same title in the other mode or compare the same mode before and after the problem occurs. Avoid treating results from one mode as proof about the other.
The title, mode, symptom, affected input, and whether the issue is consistent make a useful record if you need to contact Steam or the game’s support team. Valve’s reviewed materials do not prescribe an official consumer report template.

If standalone performance is poor
First verify that the game is actually running on Steam Frame rather than being streamed. Then consider whether the problem is general or limited to a particular scene, mode, or point in play. This helps describe the issue in relation to the rating’s scope: Valve assesses default graphics performance for standalone play, but a verification label cannot promise identical results in every situation or after every update.
- Record the game and whether the affected experience is VR or non-VR.
- Note where performance changes and whether it happens consistently.
- Include any recent game or system update you can identify.
The published criteria do not establish a consumer settings recipe for fixing low performance, so avoid assuming that a particular graphics adjustment—or hardware purchase—will solve it. Valve lists Steam Frame with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB of unified memory, and 256GB or 1TB storage options; those specifications are not a guarantee of performance for an individual game.

If streamed performance is poor
Investigate the streaming path separately from standalone execution. Compare the same game running locally on the PC with the streamed session, if you can do so under comparable conditions. If the symptom is present in the local PC session as well, that is evidence it is not limited to streaming; if it appears only in the streamed session, note that distinction when seeking support. This comparison is a practical isolation method based on the separate modes, not an official Valve troubleshooting procedure.
Write down whether the issue affects the PC session, the streamed session, or both, along with the game mode and the point where it occurs. The available Valve materials do not provide a consumer step-by-step checklist for diagnosing Steam Frame streaming problems.

If the controls or on-screen prompts are wrong
Describe the specific mismatch rather than reporting only that “the controls are broken.” Valve’s Standalone Verified criteria cover whether the default controller configuration works well, while its developer guidance addresses controller support, access to content, and prompts that correspond to the active input.
- Missing or unresponsive input: identify the button or control and what you expected it to do.
- Unexpected mapping: describe the physical input and the action it triggers.
- Motion or tracking behavior: note what movement or tracking response is wrong and when it happens.
- Incorrect button prompts: record which prompt appears and which controller input is active.
Keep the mode in view: a controller issue in standalone play and one in a PC-streamed session may not have the same cause. Valve’s developer documentation recommends the Steam Input API as a way for developers to present correct glyphs. The sources do not establish current consumer-facing Steam Frame remapping steps, so this article does not prescribe a particular remapping menu.
