Who is Laufey, or Faye?
They are two names for the same character. In the family story at the heart of the Norse games, she is Faye: Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. The new game’s official title and PlayStation page use “Laufey (Faye),” bringing the character’s full name to the foreground. PlayStation’s official game page describes her as a warrior, wife to Kratos, and mother to Atreus.

Faye’s importance is not limited to her place in the family. Santa Monica Studio describes her as a legendary warrior and leader whose influence on the Nine Realms began before she met Kratos. In the new game’s franchise story, she is also presented as a guardian of the Jötnar, a rebel leader against the Aesir, and a protector of the Wildwoods. These are descriptions of the game’s character and world, not claims about historical Norse mythology. Santa Monica Studio’s announcement gives more of that background.
Why does Faye matter in God of War (2018)?
Faye has died before God of War (2018) begins. Kratos and Atreus set out to scatter her ashes, and that journey becomes the starting point for the Norse saga’s story of a father and son. Her absence shapes their decisions and their understanding of one another, even though she is not present for the journey.

That is enough to understand the new game’s family stakes. You do not need the 2018 game’s later revelations or the ending of God of War Ragnarök to know who Faye is or why her plans for her family matter.
What is God of War Laufey about?
According to PlayStation, the new game follows Faye after her funeral. She wakes in an unfamiliar place and discovers that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk. To find a way home, she must travel through the Everywhen, which PlayStation describes as the afterlife of the gods. The official synopsis does not establish the game’s exact chronology relative to Ragnarök, so it is best not to assume where it falls in that saga.

The perspective is the notable change: instead of following Kratos and Atreus, you play as Faye. PlayStation describes combat centered on speed and control, using a new sword and Jötnar magic. Those are the publisher’s descriptions of the game, not independent assessments of how it plays. The page also describes the title as a mainline entry in the series.
Do you need to play the earlier Norse games first?
No. PlayStation says God of War Laufey can be enjoyed completely standalone. It recommends the earlier Norse games for a fuller appreciation of the world and characters, but treats them as helpful context rather than prerequisites. Check the official game page for current release and edition details.

If you want the family’s story in order, play God of War (2018) first, then God of War Ragnarök. If you only want the essentials before the new game, knowing that Faye was their wife and mother, that she died before the 2018 story, and that her plans continue to affect her family is sufficient. PlayStation lists both earlier games on the new game’s official page as useful context, not requirements.

The current US PlayStation listing gives God of War Laufey a PS5 release date of February 16, 2027. Release timing, platform availability, editions, and preorder details can change; check the official US listing for the latest information. This date and platform refer to that US page, not a confirmed worldwide release schedule.

How Faye’s presence carries beyond the story
Faye also has a musical presence in the 2018 game. Peter Scaturro, Senior Music Producer, wrote that Eivør’s vocals are heard throughout the game and serve as a reminder that Faye is still guiding Kratos and Atreus.
