Which physical discs work with the PS5 Pro Disc Drive?
Physical PS5 games
With the detachable drive installed, Sony says PS5 Pro can use physical PS5 game discs. Insert a disc and the console begins installing the game automatically; once installation has finished, select the title from Games home. Sony’s getting-started guide confirms the automatic installation step.
The cited setup material does not specify the full disc-presence or license check performed after installation. Do not assume that installing a game lets you play with the disc permanently removed. Keep the game disc available and follow the on-screen instructions if the console asks you to insert it.
Supported PS4 discs
Sony also lists support for supported PS4 physical discs. “Supported” is important: PS5 compatibility is title-specific, not a promise that every PS4 game works. Before relying on a particular disc, check Sony’s compatibility information and the individual game’s PS5 playability listing. Staying disc-less is simpler if you buy exclusively through the PlayStation Store and do not need optical movie playback. How to set up a PS5 Pro with a PS5 Disc Drive
Set aside a few minutes for a careful hardware installation. Sony’s instructions require the console to be powered down and unplugged, and they specify using the cover and feet supplied for the Pro-compatible drive. The broad sequence is below; consult the official illustrated setup page for the exact orientation of your model.
- Turn the console off completely. Do not install the drive while the PS5 Pro is running or in Rest Mode.
- Disconnect power and cables. Unplug the console and move it to a stable, soft surface so the exterior panels are not scratched while you work.
- Let the console cool. Sony’s procedure specifically says to allow the system to cool before removing covers.
- Remove the model-appropriate feet and cover. The guide covers the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups. Follow the panel-removal illustrations for your group rather than forcing a panel that does not release in the shown direction.
- Align the drive. Position the drive’s clips with the matching holes in the console and press until the clips click into place. A drive that is not aligned should not be forced.
- Fit the supplied cover. Attach the cover included with the compatible drive, then install the long feet supplied for the Pro configuration.
- Reconnect the system. Return the console to its normal position, reconnect power and display cables, and start it.
- Complete online pairing. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive and console during initial setup. Finish the on-screen pairing process before attempting to use a game or movie disc.
Do not reuse covers simply because they came from another PS5. Sony’s Pro guidance says older CFI-1000 covers and the slim CFI-2000 cover sets are not compatible with the Pro drive arrangement. The drive, cover, and feet should be treated as a matched set for the model group identified in the instructions.
Playing a physical game after installation
First insertion
Insert the game disc with the console oriented according to Sony’s setup diagram. The getting-started guide says the game installs automatically after insertion. Installation copies data to the console’s storage; it is normal for the process to take time and require a substantial free-space allowance, although Sony’s cited excerpt does not give a universal size or duration.

Launching the game
When installation is complete, choose the game tile from Games home. If the console requests the disc later, insert the same disc used for installation. Disc ownership and any required updates remain separate from the installation process, and the Sony excerpt used here does not define an offline-use policy beyond the initial drive pairing.

For a PS4 title, verify that the specific game is supported on PS5 before inserting it. A supported disc follows the same basic insert-and-install flow, but compatibility can vary by title. Do not infer support for an unlisted game from the fact that another PS4 disc works.

Identify the console and accessory model group
The setup guide refers to CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups. Read the model marking on your console and match it to Sony’s diagrams before removing a cover. This is more reliable than judging by appearance, because slim and Pro panels can look similar while using different attachment points.
Use the new feet and cover supplied for Pro
The drive installation changes the console’s external fit. Sony instructs Pro owners to attach the supplied cover and long feet after the drive clips are secured. Older CFI-1000 or slim CFI-2000 cover sets are not interchangeable with the Pro arrangement, so keep those parts separate.
Plan for the one-time pairing step
Internet access is required when the drive and console are paired during setup. This is an initial setup requirement established by Sony’s guide; the cited material does not claim that an uninterrupted internet connection is needed every time you launch a disc game. Check PS4 support before buying or installing around one title
If a specific PS4 disc is the reason you are considering the drive, look up that game’s PS5 playability first. Sony directs players to check compatibility for individual PS4 titles, so a drive purchase should not be based on an assumption that every PS4 release is supported.
Troubleshooting a PS5 Pro disc-drive setup
The drive does not appear after installation

Add it when physical media is part of how you play: you own boxed PS5 games, rely on supported PS4 discs, buy used or discounted physical copies, or want the listed Blu-ray and DVD playback. The accessory preserves those options on a disc-less console, at the cost of a separate purchase and the model-specific installation and pairing process.
Skip it when every game you play is purchased digitally and you have no use for optical movies. In that case, the drive adds hardware and setup work without changing the PS5 Pro’s digital game experience.
