You can get the Amulet of Mara in Riften by buying it from Maramal for 200 gold after asking him about marriage, or earn one during Dinya Balu’s quest, The Book of Love. To use it, equip it from your inventory. Wearing it alone does not unlock every marriage option: you must also have spoken with Maramal about marriage and meet the chosen NPC’s requirements.
Buy the Amulet of Mara from Maramal
- Travel to Riften and look for Maramal, a priest of Mara. He may be at the Temple of Mara or the Bee and Barb; a dependable time-of-day schedule is not established. (Source)
- Ask him about Mara and marriage in Skyrim. Let him explain the marriage customs before looking for the purchase option.
- After that conversation, buy the amulet from him for 200 gold. This listed price is reported by the Elder Scrolls Wiki; its publication year is not stated. (Source)
The conversation is important: simply carrying an Amulet of Mara without first asking Maramal about marriage may not enable the intended marriage dialogue.
Earn one through The Book of Love
- Go to the Temple of Mara in Riften and speak with Dinya Balu. Ask about Mara’s blessing to begin The Book of Love.
- Complete the quest’s stages: help Fastred in Ivarstead, resolve a matter in Markarth, then wear the amulet while helping the long-dead lovers Ruki and Fenrig near Gjukar’s Monument.
- Dinya gives you an Amulet of Mara during the quest, which also awards Agent of Mara. (Quest details)
This route avoids the 200-gold purchase but takes completing a multi-stage quest.
Equip the amulet
- Open your inventory and go to the apparel or jewelry section.
- Select the Amulet of Mara and choose Equip.
The amulet must be worn, not merely carried, for the marriage-related conversation it enables with certain NPCs. (Item details)

If marriage dialogue does not appear
- Check that it is equipped. Having it in your inventory is not the same as wearing it.
- Talk to Maramal about marriage customs. His explanation is a prerequisite for the intended dialogue.
- Check the NPC’s personal requirements. Eligibility can depend on completing a quest or doing a favor for that character; the amulet does not make every NPC available to marry. (Marriage requirements)
- If you are trying to buy one, finish Maramal’s explanation first. The purchase option is tied to that conversation.
