Buy Subnautica 2 now if you want an evolving underwater survival game, online co-op and a chance to influence development while the game is unfinished. Wait if you need a complete campaign, predictable performance or the full planned content set. The Early Access build launched on May 14, 2026, and Unknown Worlds expects development to remain in Early Access for roughly two to three years, although that is not a guaranteed 1.0 schedule.
What you are buying on May 14, 2026 and after
Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure set on an entirely new alien world. You can play alone or in online co-op with up to three friends, for four players total. The Steam and Xbox listings both identify cross-platform multiplayer, so the PC and Xbox versions are designed to play together.

The game is available through Steam on PC and through Xbox on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Xbox lists the title as an Xbox Play Anywhere release, with cloud play available through Xbox services. The Xbox store shows a Game Preview release date of May 14, 2026; Steam also lists that date for Early Access.

Early Access is not a smaller, finished campaign. Unknown Worlds says the current build contains multiplayer, several biomes, some narrative, creatures and craftables. The developer also says that additional biomes, creatures, craftables, features, narrative content, bug fixes and optimization are planned. The exact order and timing of those additions are not fixed.

Unknown Worlds’ Steam Early Access questionnaire says, “Based on previous Early Access games we have developed, we expect it to take about 2 to 3 years.” Treat that as a planning estimate rather than a promised 1.0 date. The same questionnaire describes the game as imperfect and invites players to help develop it.
Early Access is a good fit for some players and a poor fit for others

Early Access ownership makes sense when the development process is part of the appeal. It is a poor match if you view the purchase as a finished-game preorder with immediate access.
How co-op and cross-platform play work
Player count
The advertised limit is four players total: one host and up to three friends. Solo play is supported, so you do not need a group to enter the world.

Cross-platform sessions
Both the Steam and Xbox listings identify cross-platform multiplayer. In practical terms, the PC and Xbox editions are intended to connect for co-op rather than keeping each platform in a separate player pool. Platform accounts, privacy settings and the current build must still allow multiplayer.

What co-op does not guarantee
Cross-platform support does not make the game finished or eliminate technical issues. Early Access updates can change balance, features or networking behavior. If a group wants the most predictable session, everyone should use the same branch and keep the game updated before joining.

Choose Steam when your PC already meets the recommended specification and you prefer the Steam ecosystem. Choose Xbox when you want console play, Xbox Play Anywhere or the listed cloud options. The Xbox subscription requirement applies to online console multiplayer, not to owning a Steam copy.

The Steam listing specifies the following Windows hardware. These are requirements for the PC version, not a promise of a particular frame rate or resolution.

Before installing on PC
- Check the exact processor and graphics card model, not just the brand name. A laptop GPU with a similar number may perform differently from a desktop card.
- Leave more than the stated 50 GB if your system drive is nearly full; operating-system updates and future game patches also need working space.
- Use current Windows and graphics drivers, then confirm that DirectX 12 is available on the system.
- Do not treat “minimum” as a quality target. It indicates the listed entry point, while the recommended specification is the safer choice for an evolving game whose optimization is still in progress.
Unknown Worlds specifically lists optimization as ongoing work. That means meeting the recommended specification cannot guarantee that every future build will perform identically.

Xbox subscriptions, cloud play and ownership
Playing online on an Xbox console
Xbox states that console online multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. You therefore need both access to the game and an eligible subscription for online co-op on Xbox consoles.
Streaming from the cloud
Xbox lists cloud play with Game Pass Ultimate. If you use Essential or Premium, the Xbox listing says you must buy the game to stream it. Cloud availability, catalog inclusion and subscription benefits can change, so check the current Xbox listing before relying on streaming as your main way to play.
Xbox Play Anywhere
The Xbox listing identifies Subnautica 2 as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. That feature is tied to the Xbox purchase and supported Xbox/PC storefronts; it is separate from a Steam license.

Most buyers should begin with the Stable branch. Xbox also offers an Experimental branch for players who deliberately want pre-release builds and can accept additional risk.

Decide before switching branches
- Confirm that your Xbox account meets the Experimental age and access requirements.
- Install or open Xbox Insider Hub and enroll in the available Subnautica 2 Experimental option.
- Back up anything you value in the Stable branch conceptually: Experimental and Stable saves are separate, so progress will not simply follow you between them.
- Make sure every friend joining the session is on Experimental. A Stable player cannot join an Experimental multiplayer session.
- Return to Stable when you want the normal branch, and remember that its saves remain separate.
Xbox Wire’s August 12, 2026 explanation is explicit about the trade-off: these are pre-release builds, so players should expect bugs, unfinished features, balance changes and other rough edges.

Current price information
The Xbox US store currently lists the game at $29.99+, with regional prices varying by market. The “+” and regional qualification mean you should verify the final amount in your own storefront before paying. The Steam price is not stated in the store details available for this guide.
Why the price may change
Unknown Worlds states that the price of Subnautica 2 will increase after Early Access. Buying during Early Access can therefore cost less than buying later, but the lower price is compensation for purchasing an unfinished product rather than a guarantee of value for every player.
Pre-order status
An official help-center response dated April 16, 2026 said there were no plans for a pre-order and recommended wishlisting instead. That statement is date-specific; storefront policies can change, so check the current Steam or Xbox page if you are reading this after that date.

A practical buy-now checklist
- Confirm your platform: Steam PC, Xbox Series X|S or Xbox PC.
- Check the branch: use Stable unless you specifically want Experimental testing and meet its requirements.
- Verify multiplayer access: on Xbox console, make sure your Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate subscription is active.
- Check PC hardware: compare your exact CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, DirectX 12 support and available storage with the table above.

Who should wait for the finished version?
Waiting is the sensible choice if your priority is a complete narrative arc, a broad final biome and creature roster, stable performance or a settled progression system. The developer has listed those areas among the content and improvements still planned, but has not supplied a guaranteed completion date.
Waiting also avoids learning systems that may later be rebalanced. That is valuable for players who prefer one definitive first playthrough rather than revisiting a world after major updates.
Who is likely to enjoy buying now?
Early Access is better suited to players who enjoy exploration before every system is complete, want to play the available co-op with friends now, and are comfortable reporting bugs or adjusting to change. The purchase is most defensible when the current build already offers enough biomes, creatures, craftables and narrative for your group, even without the additions planned for later development.
