Something Is Killing the Children is not an available series or film yet. The latest official announcement says Blumhouse is developing the comic in two formats at once: a live-action feature film and an adult animated television series. No release date or platform was announced.
The source material is BOOM! Studios’ horror comic by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera. It follows children who see monsters that adults cannot, and Erica Slaughter, a hunter from a mysterious organization who can fight them. No. The adaptation is still in development, so there is no released episode, film, streaming page, or confirmed premiere date to watch. The current official status comes from BOOM! For official updates, BOOM! directed fans to www.boom-studios.com. Development announcements can change, so the absence of a date is meaningful: the projects have been announced, but they are not ready for viewers.
What is the current adaptation status?
Blumhouse’s plan covers two separate productions rather than one project changing formats. The same property is being developed as a live-action feature film and as an adult animated television series. James Tynion IV is attached to adapt and executive-produce the animated series. Werther Dell’Edera is named co-executive producer and visual development consultant.

These formats may eventually tell related versions of the story, but the announcement does not establish whether they will share a continuity, release in a particular order, or adapt the same story arcs. It is safer to regard them as parallel adaptations until the producers provide more detail.

Older BOOM! Studios material announced development at Netflix with Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. That is a historical development announcement, not the latest confirmed home for the adaptation. The later Blumhouse announcement is the best current official status reviewed for this property.

In practical terms, there is no confirmed Netflix series to watch and no evidence in the current announcement that Netflix remains the release platform. Do not confuse an earlier development deal with an available or scheduled show.
What is the comic about?
The central premise is simple and unsettling: children can see monsters that adults cannot. In the opening setup, children in Archer’s Peak are dying or disappearing. Survivors describe impossible creatures hiding in the shadows, but the adults around them do not believe what they are reporting.
Erica Slaughter arrives claiming she can solve the monster problem. She is a hunter connected to a mysterious organization, and she operates in a world where the supernatural threat is real even when most grown-ups cannot perceive it. The official series synopsis later places Erica in Tribulation, New Mexico, where she faces both a monster and human adversaries.

The story therefore has two linked conflicts. Erica must identify and kill creatures that prey on children, while also dealing with people whose choices, fear, secrecy, or disbelief make the danger harder to stop. The horror is not only about an unseen creature; it is also about what happens when vulnerable witnesses are dismissed.

The creators and the visual identity
James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera co-created the comic. The official credits also name Miquel Muerto as colorist and AndWorld Design as letterer. Dell’Edera’s visual development involvement in the animated adaptation gives the screen project a direct connection to the comic’s visual foundation, although no final animation style has been announced.
Tynion described the concept as “a very grounded human story about very grounded human fears that take a more literal, horrifying shape.” He then summarized Erica’s role: “She kills the monsters the other adults can’t see.” That description is a useful guide to the tone: the supernatural premise is tied to recognizable fears, relationships, and failures of protection rather than existing only as an abstract monster hunt.
Do you need to read the comic before watching?
No. If and when either adaptation is released, it should be possible to approach it as its own entry point. The official material does not say that viewers must read the comic first, and neither announced production has a confirmed release order or continuity relationship with the other.
Reading first is still worthwhile if you want the original version of the premise, Erica’s introduction, and the comic’s pacing and artwork. It can also help you recognize which elements are being adapted directly and which are new choices for live action or animation. It is not a prerequisite established by the producers; it is a way to experience the source before an adaptation interprets it.

Where should you start reading?
BOOM! Studios advises readers to start at the beginning. The first issue’s original announcement pointed readers toward print comic shops, the publisher’s webstore, and digital providers. A first collected volume is the most straightforward physical starting point because it gathers the opening material in one book, but check the exact edition and current availability with the retailer or comic shop you use.
- Start with the first issue or first collected volume. This introduces the disappearances in Archer’s Peak, the children’s accounts of monsters, and Erica’s arrival.
- Continue in publication order. The comic’s mystery and Erica’s history unfold over successive arcs, so jumping to a later storyline can reveal information intended to arrive gradually.
- Use a digital edition if print is unavailable. BOOM! identified digital providers in its launch guidance, but the current storefront, territory, and edition can vary.
- Ask a local comic shop for the current collected edition. Shop inventory changes, and a bookseller can identify whether you are buying the opening volume, a later volume, or a special edition.
You do not need a separate guide to the House of Slaughter or Erica’s organization before beginning. Those elements can be learned in the order the series presents them.
How does the continuing comic affect the adaptation?
The comic is an ongoing property rather than a completed story waiting for a single screen translation. BOOM! announced that issue 41 began a new arc in April 2025, returning to Erica’s younger years and her training in the House of Slaughter.

What does the WEBTOON announcement mean for reading access?
In September 2025, WEBTOON Entertainment and BOOM! announced that WEBTOON would become the exclusive home for vertical-scroll editions of this title and three other BOOM! series on its English-language platform. The announcement said launch dates would be announced later.
That means a digital vertical-scroll edition was planned, not that its current launch status or territorial availability is established here. Check the English-language platform directly for a live listing before relying on it as your reading option. The announcement does not replace BOOM!’s recommendation to begin with the comic’s opening material, nor does it establish that every print issue or collected volume will appear there.

- Check the announcement date. A page referring only to the old Netflix development is historical and may not reflect the Blumhouse plan.
- Look for a named official source. BOOM! Studios’ own announcement is the clearest reference for the current rights and format information described here.
- Require a date and distributor to be stated together. A supposed premiere date without a confirmed platform, network, or theatrical distributor is not enough to establish where or when you can watch.
- Do not pay for an adaptation that has not been released. A comic purchase is a purchase of the source material, not access to an unreleased film or series.

If you came looking for a show to stream tonight, there is no official adaptation available yet. If you want to understand the story before the screen versions arrive, read the comic from its beginning.
