Choose a gaming desk by measuring the space and equipment it must support—not by its gaming label or advertised footprint. Check the usable desktop, monitor distance, keyboard and mouse room, height and leg clearance, storage layout, and cable routing before buying.
Start by measuring the setup
Measure the area the desk will occupy, then map the equipment that needs to fit on it. Include monitor bases or arms, keyboard, mouse movement, speakers, controllers, and any PC, work, or streaming equipment. OSHA’s workstation purchasing checklist says a work surface should fit a monitor, keyboard, and input device; Lenovo notes that multiple-display setups depend on desk width, depth, and structure.

Compare the usable flat surface, not just the outer dimensions. A frame, raised shelf, monitor stand, or built-in storage can reduce the space available for play. For a multi-monitor setup, check the actual monitor footprints and whether the desk structure accommodates their weight and arrangement.
Check width and depth for screen placement
Width determines whether the displays and other equipment fit side by side. Depth affects both monitor placement and the clear space left in front for your keyboard and mouse. OSHA’s purchasing checklist recommends enough depth to place a monitor at least 20 inches from the user’s eyes. That is checklist guidance, not a universal ideal viewing distance for every screen or person.

IKEA UAE’s general desk-sizing guide suggests at least 100 cm of width and 60 cm of depth. These are retailer suggestions, not universal ergonomic requirements or gaming-desk standards. Treat them as reference points and confirm the dimensions of the specific desk and setup.
Match desk height and clearance to your body
The desk, chair, and user work together as one workstation. Aim for a comfortable, neutral typing position, with the keyboard around elbow height and close enough that you are not reaching. Make sure the mouse can sit beside the keyboard with room to move.
OSHA lists seated keyboard heights of 22–30 inches and standing keyboard heights of 36–46.5 inches, and says seated/standing adjustability is desirable. These are workstation recommendations, not product standards for gaming desks. A fixed-height desk may still work, but a keyboard tray can help adjust the typing position if it is wide and deep enough for both keyboard and mouse.
Check the space beneath the top as carefully as its height. OSHA gives minimum under-desk clearance depths of 17.6 inches for knees and 24 inches for feet, along with width guidance. IKEA UAE suggests general legroom of about 60 cm wide by 45 cm deep. These figures are reference points: the desk frame, drawers, crossbars, and your seated position determine the actual usable space.

OSHA also recommends avoiding sharp leading edges where the arms rest, preferring rounded or sloping edges, and suggests a matte surface to minimize glare.
Decide whether adjustability is useful
A height-adjustable desk can help if you want to alternate between sitting and standing. Before choosing one, check that its height range suits the user and that the frame works with the equipment and layout. Stability matters at the heights you will actually use; the available manufacturer guidance describes it as a design consideration but does not set a universal stability test or weight threshold.
Plan cable slack for the desk’s full range of movement, so leads do not pull tight, snag, or catch as the desk changes height. If you do not need to alternate postures, prioritize a fixed desk that fits your chair and typing position rather than paying for adjustment you will not use.

List what needs to remain on the desktop and what can be put away. Drawers can hold stationery and documents; shelves can keep frequently used items accessible; cabinets can hide items that do not need to stay in reach. Gaming desks may also offer side racks or shelves, but none of these features is essential for every setup.

Check where storage sits and whether it blocks legroom, limits chair movement, or takes space needed for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Prefer storage that suits the items you actually need to keep nearby.
Look for practical cable routing
Grommets, access holes, channels, and trays can route power and data leads away from the desktop. This is more than an appearance choice: IKEA notes that safe routing helps prevent cables from becoming trip hazards or being accidentally damaged.
If the desk has no built-in routing, a separate under-desk cable tray or cable clips may help. Check the mounting method and available clearance before buying an accessory. On an adjustable desk, route cables so they have enough slack throughout the height range and cannot catch on the frame.
