The best PvE extraction shooter is not simply a game with fewer human opponents. It is a raid-based game where artificial-intelligence enemies, objectives, resource decisions and the extraction itself provide enough tension after player-versus-player damage is removed. Before choosing a title, verify the actual rules of its PvE mode, then inspect its AI variety, loot-loss model, session timing, solo support, matchmaking and platform requirements.
This checklist uses the temporary PvE matchmaking test announced for ARC Raiders on September 24, 2026, as a dated example. The test runs October 13–20, 2026, so its rules should not be treated as a permanent feature. The broader criteria apply to any extraction shooter.

Start with the mode’s real PvE rules
“PvE-focused” can describe several very different experiences. Some games remove player damage entirely; others retain stealing, ambushes or contested extraction points while merely reducing the incentive to fight. Read the mode rules rather than relying on a store description or a playlist name.

Ask whether another player can hurt you
The clearest test is mechanical: can a human opponent damage, rob or deliberately block your squad in the mode you intend to play? If yes, the mode is still PvPvE, even if most of your time is spent fighting bots. Check whether player damage, inventory theft, body looting and extraction denial are disabled separately; a mode can remove gunfire while leaving other forms of player interference.

Check whether the setting is permanent
A limited event, weekend playlist or matchmaking experiment is not the same as a supported permanent mode. Record the announcement date, start and end dates, and what the developer says will happen afterward. A temporary mode may be ideal for a short visit but unsuitable if you want a long-term PvE progression track.
Use ARC Raiders as a time-stamped example
Embark Studios announced a PvE matchmaking toggle test for ARC Raiders running from October 13 through October 20, 2026. During the test, players can switch between the classic PvPvE experience and PvE sessions in which player-to-player damage is set to zero. The announcement says the test combines solo, duo and trio players, lowers overall loot value, excludes certain conditions that depend on player uncertainty, and does not alter PvPvE matchmaking rating.
Embark also says the toggle will be removed when the test ends and matchmaking will return to normal; it does not promise a permanent PvE mode. Aleks, the game’s executive producer, put the limitation plainly: “It’s important to remember that this is, at least initially, a limited test. When the test ends, the toggle will be removed and matchmaking will return to normal.” Verify later announcements before assuming the option still exists after October 20, 2026.
Evaluate AI enemies and what you do during a raid
Removing human opponents only works when the remaining activity has depth. A strong PvE extraction shooter gives you competing objectives, readable enemy behavior and reasons to change plans as a raid develops.
Look for more than one enemy role
Useful variety comes from enemies that create different tactical problems: a durable unit that controls space, a fast attacker that punishes noise, a ranged threat that forces cover, or a patrol that makes movement timing matter. Cosmetic reskins do not provide the same variety. Look for distinct attack patterns, alert states, terrain interactions and counterplay.

Inspect the objective loop
Typical extraction activities include scavenging, quest completion, exploration, fighting enemy groups and reaching an extraction point. Ask whether objectives are optional or mandatory, whether they can appear in different locations, and whether completing one exposes you to a new risk. A raid becomes repetitive when every run is the same route to the same containers.
Embark describes its PvE test as emphasizing scavenging, quests and exploration in relative safety from hostile players. It also says the test is not intended to add harder PvE or a new PvE progression system. That distinction matters: a safer playlist can change the social pressure without adding new enemy tiers, missions or long-term rewards.

When possible, play several raids while deliberately avoiding human combat. Note how quickly you run out of meaningful tasks, whether enemy behavior remains challenging, and whether the map still rewards detours. If the only memorable moments come from surprise attacks by players, the game may be PvPvE with a PvE option rather than a fully satisfying PvE extraction experience.
Understand death, loot and recovery before investing time
Extraction games make each decision consequential by separating what you carry into a raid from what you successfully bring home. The exact rules vary, so establish them before risking valuable equipment.
Map the inventory categories
- Loadout: weapons, armor, tools or consumables you bring in. Determine which items disappear on death and whether insured or protected equipment can return.
- Found loot: materials, quest objects and valuables collected during the raid. Check whether everything is lost, whether secure storage exists, and whether quest items have special protection.
- Persistent stash: the storage that survives extraction. Identify capacity limits, sorting rules and whether stored items can be sold, crafted or used for upgrades.
- Character progression: levels, skills, vendors, recipes or hideout improvements that carry between raids. Confirm which progress is permanent and which resets with a season or test.
Calculate the cost of a failed run
Do not judge difficulty only by enemy damage. A forgiving combat system can still feel harsh if every death removes an expensive kit and hours of quest progress. Conversely, generous recovery can make a dangerous map feel manageable. Before choosing a game, answer these questions:

- What is lost immediately on death?
- Can you recover a body or backpack, and can enemies take the contents first?
- Are basic replacement kits affordable through normal play?
- Does a successful extraction preserve only items, or also unlocks and quest progress?
- Are losses different in the PvE mode from the standard mode?
These are genre conventions, not universal rules. Treat a developer’s specific inventory and recovery explanation as authoritative for that title.

Check the raid’s timing and extraction design
Extraction tension usually comes from deciding when to leave, not merely from winning a fight. Common implementations use designated extraction points and time-limited matches, but the details determine whether the pressure feels strategic or arbitrary.
Identify extraction-point behavior
Find out whether exits are fixed, randomized, revealed on the map, or activated by an objective. Check whether an extraction takes time, makes noise, consumes an item or attracts additional enemies. A clear, learnable process lets you plan; an unexplained delay can feel like a punishment unrelated to your decisions.
Measure the cost of staying longer
Longer raids should offer better opportunities while increasing exposure. Examine what changes over time: enemy density, roaming bosses, resource scarcity, map hazards, shrinking safe areas or limited ammunition. If the reward curve is flat, the optimal strategy may be leaving immediately; if the penalty is overwhelming, exploration becomes irrational.
Look for meaningful abort decisions
A good system lets you leave with a modest haul, push toward a quest item, or turn back after an unexpected threat. You should understand what information supports each choice. Unclear timers, hidden extraction conditions and unavoidable last-second damage undermine the decision-making that defines the genre.

Match the game to your group
Solo and cooperative play can feel like different games. A title that supports squads may still be awkward for a lone player if enemy health, objectives or extraction times assume multiple people.
Verify squad sizes and solo rules
Check the maximum party size, whether solo players enter mixed-size matchmaking, and whether enemy scaling changes with group size. Find out if a disconnected teammate leaves you with their equipment, whether you can revive allies, and whether a solo queue prevents premade squads from joining your lobby.
Inspect matchmaking and cross-play
Look for region selection, input-based matchmaking, cross-platform parties and account requirements. Cross-play can enlarge the player pool, but some games let you disable it or separate mouse-and-keyboard from controller players. Confirm whether progression and purchases follow your account when you change platforms.
The official ARC Raiders page says the game supports cross-platform social play across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and can be played solo or as a squad. The PvE test itself combines solo, duo and trio players rather than separating those group sizes. That arrangement may suit friends who want flexible parties, but it is a rule to verify if you specifically want solo-only matchmaking.

Before buying or installing, check the current storefront listing and the developer’s live game page. A platform appearing in an old trailer or announcement does not prove that the current mode is available there.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. ARC Raiders access requirements
Embark’s official game page lists Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GeForce NOW. It states that an internet connection, an Embark ID and a third-party platform account are required. Cloud availability, regional restrictions and subscription requirements can change, so confirm the terms on your chosen platform at the time you play.
Questions to answer for any title
- Which editions and platforms currently include the PvE mode?
- Is a paid online subscription required on console?
- Does the game require a separate publisher account?
- Can you transfer characters or stash progress between platforms?
- Does the test or seasonal mode have a separate download or queue?
What the ARC Raiders PvE test can—and cannot—tell you
ARC Raiders is a useful case because its standard design combines machine threats with other Raiders, while the announced test isolates a safer matchmaking option. The official description presents an extraction adventure built around valuable loot, character and playstyle choices, and threats from both machines and players.
| Question | Announced answer for the October 13–20, 2026 test | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Can players damage one another? | No player-to-player damage in PvE sessions | Applies to the limited test, not a promised permanent mode |
| Who can enter? | Solo, duo and trio players are combined | Not announced as a solo-only queue |
| How does loot change? | Overall loot value is lowered | The announcement does not establish exact percentages |
| Does PvPvE rating change? | No | The test does not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating |
| What happens after October 20? | The toggle is scheduled for removal and matchmaking returns to normal | Check for later developer updates |
| Is a permanent PvE mode guaranteed? | No | Embark explicitly presents this as a test |
Interpret the developer-reported player figures carefully
In its September 24 announcement, Embark reported that 37% of its player population plays friendly co-op, 27% is mixed, and 34% is pure PvP; it also reported that 51% of the surveyed player base expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option. These are developer-reported figures. The announcement does not provide the sample size or detailed survey method alongside the numbers, so they indicate reported sentiment rather than an independently verified industry measurement.

Use a repeatable checklist when comparing games
The following process prevents a polished trailer or a “PvE” label from deciding for you.
- Write down the exact mode. Record whether it is PvE-only, PvPvE with reduced incentives, seasonal, or a limited test.
- Confirm human-player interactions. Check damage, looting, body access, extraction interference and communication rules separately.
- List the AI and objectives. Name the enemy roles, mission types, map activities and reasons to revisit locations.
- Trace one complete risk cycle. Note what you bring in, what you can find, what death removes and what extraction preserves.
- Inspect session pressure. Record raid length, extraction locations, activation time, escalating threats and the cost of waiting.
- Test your group. Verify solo viability, squad limits, matchmaking composition, cross-play and voice or ping tools.
- Confirm access. Check platform, storefront, publisher account, internet requirement and console online subscription.
- Recheck dates. If the mode is an event or test, put its end date in your calendar and look for a post-test plan.
Warning signs that a PvE mode may not suit you
- The label is broader than the rules: “PvE-focused” still permits player damage or theft.
- AI is only a placeholder: enemies have one behavior and objectives repeat without changing the route.
- Losses are opaque: the game does not clearly explain insurance, secure storage or quest-item protection.
- Extraction is arbitrary: exits, timers or activation costs are hidden until the final moments.
- Progression is tied to the wrong mode: the safer playlist gives reduced rewards or no access to the upgrades you want.
- Access information is stale: a test date, platform list or account rule comes from an old announcement.
For a PvE-oriented player, the deciding question is not whether a game contains bots. It is whether the complete loop—choose a loadout, pursue varied objectives, manage escalating risk and extract—remains engaging when human opponents are removed. Verify that loop in the exact mode and date window you will play, and treat temporary experiments such as the October 2026 ARC Raiders toggle as temporary until the developer says otherwise.
