The Nintendo Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still upcoming: Nintendo lists November 5, 2026 as its release date. Choose that version if you want Nintendo’s announced modern presentation and controls; choose the Nintendo 64 original if preserving the game’s original hardware-era feel matters more. A third option sits between them: the N64 game in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Classics library, which is convenient but is not technically identical to an original cartridge and console.
That recommendation is necessarily provisional. The remake has not been released as of October 13, 2026, so there are no independent measurements of its image quality, frame rate, input response, camera behavior, or overall play feel. The comparison below separates what Nintendo has announced from what remains unknown.

The three Ocarina of Time experiences you can choose
“Nintendo 64 version” can mean two different things. Playing an original cartridge on Nintendo 64 hardware is the clearest way to experience the original platform release. Playing the N64 game through Nintendo Switch Online uses an official reproduction in the Classics application. The upcoming Switch 2 product is a new remake, not the unchanged N64 program running in an emulator.
| Version | What it is | Access | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original N64 cartridge | The original game running on Nintendo 64 hardware | Requires the original console, cartridge and compatible display setup | Players who value the most authentic platform experience |
| N64 Classics on Switch or Switch 2 | An official reproduction of the N64 game in Nintendo’s Classics software | Requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; the game is not sold separately through the service | Players who want convenient access on a current console |
| Switch 2 remake | A version Nintendo describes as built from the ground up for Switch 2 | Nintendo lists a physical Switch 2 edition; retail availability and pricing should be checked near launch | Players who want the announced visual, audio, dialogue, camera and control updates |
Nintendo’s own warning is important when comparing the two N64 routes: its Classics games are reproductions, and “There are some differences in game performance and presentation as compared to the original versions of these games.” Therefore, “original N64” and “N64 Classics” should not be treated as interchangeable technical references.

What Nintendo has announced for the Switch 2 remake
Nintendo’s U.S. product page says the remake is “built from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2.” It lists a completely overhauled visual presentation, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls and modern camera movements. Those are announced features, not results confirmed by independent play or testing.
Overhauled visuals
The product page promises “completely overhauled visuals.” That establishes a substantial presentation redesign, but it does not establish a particular resolution, frame rate, display mode, texture quality, lighting system or performance target. Until the game can be played, it is not possible to say how sharp or stable the result will be in a specific television or handheld mode.
Voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue
Nintendo says the remake adds voiced cutscenes and expands the dialogue. These changes affect how story scenes are delivered and how much written material is present. The announcement does not specify the amount of new dialogue, the languages available, or whether every scene is voiced, so those details should not be inferred from the headline feature list.
Symphonic orchestral music
The remake is also announced with symphonic orchestral music. This is a new musical presentation rather than a claim that the original soundtrack has been replaced in every context. Nintendo has not published a track-by-track description or independent audio comparison, so the practical difference in any particular scene remains unverified.
Enhanced controls and modern camera movements
“Enhanced controls” and “modern camera movements” indicate that Nintendo is revising two areas associated with the original platform design. The announcement does not define the button layout, optional control schemes, motion features, camera rules or accessibility settings. Do not assume that modern controls will feel better for every player until those choices can be evaluated directly.

ZELDA NOTES features
Nintendo’s product information promotes ZELDA NOTES, a game-specific service in the Nintendo Switch App. The listed functions include progress information, image-based location challenges and an ocarina feature. These are companion-service features associated with the Switch 2 release; they are not part of an original N64 cartridge and are not listed as features of the N64 Classics reproduction.
Release status and evidence boundary
As of October 13, 2026, the remake remains unreleased. Nintendo’s announcement supports a conditional choice based on intended features, not a post-launch review. No controlled Switch 2-versus-N64 benchmark, measured performance statistic or hands-on comparison is established in the available official material.

What the original Nintendo 64 version offers
The original cartridge is the reference point for authenticity. It preserves the game as designed for Nintendo 64 hardware, including the period’s controller, display behavior, audio output and camera conventions. If your goal is to understand how the game existed on its original platform rather than how it has been re-presented later, original hardware is the least ambiguous choice.
Why original hardware matters
Authenticity is more than the game data. The console, cartridge and controller form one historical package, and the display chain contributes to the way the image is seen. A modern reproduction can reproduce the software while still differing in timing, scaling, filters, controller feel or other presentation details. Nintendo explicitly acknowledges such differences for its Classics software, which is why an original cartridge remains the strongest choice for a faithful platform experience.

What you give up
Original hardware requires access to working equipment and a display setup that accepts it. It also does not provide the remake’s announced voiced scenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, modern camera movements, enhanced controls or ZELDA NOTES functions. Those are separate product features, not updates that can be enabled on the cartridge.
Playing Ocarina of Time through Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo lists Ocarina of Time in the Nintendo 64 Classics library for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Access requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and Nintendo Support says the classic games remain available while the membership is active. The service does not sell this N64 game as an individual permanent purchase.
How membership access works
- The game is launched through the Nintendo 64 Classics library rather than as a separately purchased title.
- Access continues only while the account has an active Expansion Pack membership.
- The software can be used offline for up to seven consecutive days; after that, the account must connect online so Nintendo can verify membership.
Membership terms, regional catalogs and prices can change. Confirm the current offering for your account’s country before subscribing, especially if you are choosing the Classics route for long-term access.
Library conveniences on Switch 2
Nintendo’s Australian Nintendo 64 Classics page lists a CRT screen filter and rewind for the Switch 2 library. These are conveniences supplied by the platform software. They are not properties of the original cartridge, and using them changes the comparison with original hardware.
The reproduction warning
Nintendo cautions that Classics software can differ in performance and presentation from the original versions. The warning does not identify a single universal difference or imply that every player will notice the same behavior. It does mean that Switch Online should be described as a convenient official reproduction, not as a guaranteed technical duplicate of a Nintendo 64 running the cartridge.

Controller choices
You do not need a Nintendo 64 controller to play the Classics version. Nintendo’s optional wireless N64 controller is designed for the Classics library on Switch and Switch 2, charges through USB-C and includes built-in rumble. It can make the control layout feel closer to the original, but it does not turn the Switch software into an original cartridge or remove Nintendo’s reproduction caveat.
When the optional N64 controller makes sense
- Choose it if the original N64 button arrangement is central to your preference.
- Skip it if you are comfortable with the standard Switch 2 controller or want to avoid an additional purchase.
- Check Nintendo’s regional store restrictions and current availability before buying; Nintendo’s support information lists U.S. and Canadian details that may not apply elsewhere.

Choose the Switch 2 remake for a modern presentation
The remake is the logical choice if your priority is the announced package of overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls and modern camera movements. It is also the only option in this comparison that includes the promoted ZELDA NOTES companion features.
Recommended Free Tools
This recommendation is based on Nintendo’s description. It does not promise that the remake will outperform the original in every technical or artistic respect, because those judgments require the released game and independent evaluation.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

Choose original N64 hardware for authenticity
Use the original cartridge and console when your priority is preserving the original platform experience. This route avoids the specific reproduction differences Nintendo warns about in the Classics application and retains the period hardware context that the remake intentionally changes.
Choose N64 Classics for convenience
The Classics library is the practical middle path when you want the N64 game on a current console without sourcing original hardware. It is easier to launch and supports platform conveniences such as rewind; in exchange, access depends on an active Expansion Pack membership, offline use is subject to the seven-day verification limit, and presentation or performance may differ from the original.
Choose based on release timing
If you want to play now, the remake cannot be selected until it launches. The N64 cartridge and Classics options are the available ways to play the original version, subject to the hardware or membership requirements described above. If you can wait and specifically want Nintendo’s announced redesign, waiting for the Switch 2 release is the only way to assess that version directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA decision framework you can use before buying or subscribing
- Decide whether authenticity or modernization comes first. Authenticity points to original N64 hardware; modernization points to the Switch 2 remake.
- Separate convenience from technical identity. The Classics app is convenient, but Nintendo says its reproduction can differ from the original. Treat it as its own option rather than a perfect substitute.
- Check whether you need access immediately. The unreleased remake cannot satisfy an immediate play date. Choose original hardware or the Classics library if you want to start before launch.
- Review your access model. Original hardware requires the console and cartridge. Classics requires an active Expansion Pack membership and periodic online verification. Nintendo lists a physical Switch 2 edition for the remake, but current retail stock and pricing should be confirmed near launch.
- Choose your controller deliberately. The optional N64 controller may suit players seeking the original layout; it is not mandatory for Classics play.
- Wait for evidence if technical performance is decisive. No official material currently supplies a comparative frame-rate, resolution, latency or image-quality test. If those measurements determine your purchase, postpone the final judgment until the remake is available for testing.
Comparison by the questions players actually ask
| Question | Best-supported answer |
|---|---|
| Is the Switch 2 version simply the N64 game? | No. Nintendo describes it as built from the ground up for Switch 2 and announces substantial presentation and control changes. |
| Can you play Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 without the remake? | Yes. Nintendo includes the N64 game in the Nintendo 64 Classics library for Switch 2, subject to an active Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. |
| Is Switch Online identical to an original N64? | No guarantee is made. Nintendo says Classics reproductions can differ in performance and presentation from the original versions. |
| Do you need the N64 controller? | No. Nintendo’s controller is optional; standard Switch controls can be used for Classics play. |
| Which version has voiced cutscenes and orchestral music? | Nintendo announces those features for the Switch 2 remake. They are not announced as features of the original cartridge or the N64 Classics reproduction. |
| Can the remake’s quality be judged now? | Only from Nintendo’s announced feature list. Independent performance and gameplay judgments must wait until release. |
What is still unknown about the remake
Nintendo’s announcement is specific about the categories of change but not about many implementation details. The following questions remain open until the game is released and documented:
- Target and achieved resolution in handheld and docked play
- Frame-rate targets and consistency
- Input latency and the exact control mapping
- How modern camera movements behave in different gameplay situations
- The scope of voiced scenes and expanded dialogue
- The complete arrangement and availability of the orchestral soundtrack
- Whether accessibility options, language support and other settings differ by region
- How ZELDA NOTES works in practice and which app, account or network conditions it requires
None of these unknowns should be filled with assumptions based solely on the words “built from the ground up” or “overhauled.” Those phrases describe Nintendo’s intent and feature positioning, not measured results.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each type of player
- Want the most modern version? Select the Switch 2 remake, with the understanding that this is a pre-release recommendation based on Nintendo’s announced features.
- Want the original experience exactly where it began? Use an original Nintendo 64, cartridge and compatible setup.
- Want the easiest current-console access to the N64 game? Use Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack’s Classics library, accepting the membership requirement and Nintendo’s warning about reproduction differences.
- Want to compare both eras? Play the N64 version first for the historical baseline, then evaluate the remake after launch rather than assuming its announced upgrades will automatically suit your preferences.
