Why release order is the safest first playthrough
Kingdom Hearts tells its story out of chronological order. Prequels reveal information that the original games deliberately withhold, while later games assume you recognize returning characters, organizations and unresolved mysteries. Sorting every game by its in-world timeline can therefore spoil the intended introductions and make the series harder, not easier, to follow.
Release order preserves the way the audience first met Sora, Riku, Kairi, Roxas, Aqua, Terra, Ventus and the wider cast. It also lets each combat system and story format arrive in a manageable sequence. Square Enix’s official collection menu is arranged by package rather than presented as a mandatory play sequence, so the route below is an editorial recommendation for newcomers.

If you only want the minimum preparation for KH4, use the short route later in this guide. If you want the richest understanding of the characters and plot, follow the expanded route and watch every included story presentation.

1. KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX-
This is the correct starting point even if you have seen later games or know the broad outline of the story. Sora’s home disappears, and he travels with Donald Duck and Goofy across Disney-inspired worlds while searching for Riku and Kairi and confronting the Heartless. The game establishes the vocabulary that later entries repeatedly use: the Keyblade, hearts, worlds, darkness and the bonds between friends.
Play this version rather than trying to begin with a prequel. Its mysteries and character introductions are designed to be your first contact with the series.

2. KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories
Re:Chain of Memories follows Sora and Riku into Castle Oblivion, where their memories are manipulated. Its events explain why the opening of KHII looks different and why several characters matter when the numbered sequel begins.
The card-based combat is substantially different from the first game. You build decks, manage card values and choose attacks within that system. If you dislike it, do not silently skip the story: watch a complete recap or the full story presentation and mark it as a recap rather than a played game. Understanding Castle Oblivion is more valuable than forcing yourself through a combat style you cannot enjoy.
3. KINGDOM HEARTS II -FINAL MIX-
KHII opens with Roxas in Twilight Town before returning to Sora, Donald and Goofy. The game develops Organization XIII, deepens the search for Riku and reunites plot threads introduced in the first two entries. Playing it after Re:Chain of Memories gives the opening hours their intended context.

4. 358/2 Days: the Roxas and Xion story
358/2 Days focuses on Roxas, Axel and Xion. Its story is particularly useful for understanding relationships and emotional stakes that make KHII’s later scenes more effective.
The HD collections list 358/2 Days, but the exact presentation varies by edition: some packages provide a cinematic story compilation rather than the original playable Nintendo DS game. Check the contents of your platform and region. A movie presentation is still worthwhile, but describe it accurately as watching the story rather than playing the original game.
5. Birth by Sleep -FINAL MIX-
This prequel follows three Keyblade wielders: Terra, Ventus and Aqua. Their separate journeys connect to Master Xehanort’s scheme and the Keyblade War, supplying background that later games treat as foundational.
Although it takes place earlier in the fictional chronology, play it here. Its revelations land better after you understand the original game and KHII, and its combat and campaign structure are easier to appreciate once you know the series’ basic ideas.
6. Re:coded
Re:coded contributes context to later plot threads but is not essential to the shortest route. The HD package may present it as a story movie rather than the original Nintendo DS game, and the precise format depends on edition and region.
Watch the story if you want the fullest continuity. If your priority is reaching KHIII and preparing for KH4, a reliable recap is a reasonable choice after Birth by Sleep.

7. Dream Drop Distance HD
In Dream Drop Distance, Sora and Riku seek the power to release sleeping hearts during their Mark of Mastery exam. The game also reveals more of Master Xehanort’s long-term plans, making it a major setup chapter for KHIII.
Do not place it after KHIII on a first run. Its information and ending are intended to prepare you for the third numbered game.
8. χ Back Cover
χ Back Cover is a cinematic story presentation about the ancient Keyblade era. It is part of the HD 2.8 collection, but it is not a conventional full-length playable game. Watch it when you want broader historical context; it is less important than Dream Drop Distance and 0.2 for a time-limited route.

0.2 is a playable bridge between Birth by Sleep and KHIII. It follows Aqua and connects the earlier prequel’s consequences to the situation that KHIII inherits. Its short length makes it practical to complete immediately before the third numbered game.
10. KINGDOM HEARTS III
KHIII is the major payoff to the Dark Seeker saga. Sora, Donald and Goofy continue their journey while the game brings together threads from the numbered games, prequels and side stories. For the clearest experience, finish Dream Drop Distance and 0.2 first, and do not treat KHIII as an entry point simply because it is newer.
11. Re Mind
KINGDOM HEARTS III Re Mind is optional post-game DLC included with the official KHIII bundle. It adds material around KHIII’s climax. The available official information confirms its inclusion, but does not establish that it is mandatory preparation for KH4.

12. Melody of Memory
Melody of Memory is a rhythm game that recaps the series and adds post-KHIII story scenes. You do not need to complete every musical stage to obtain the new narrative material. If you enjoy rhythm gameplay, play it after KHIII and Re Mind; otherwise, prioritize the story scenes and use a recap for the musical sections.

The shortest sensible route before KH4
Readers with limited time should complete this sequence:
- KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX-
- KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories, or a complete story recap
- KINGDOM HEARTS II -FINAL MIX-
- Birth by Sleep -FINAL MIX-
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-
- KINGDOM HEARTS III
Add the 358/2 Days story presentation if you want the Roxas and Xion context that most improves KHII’s emotional payoff. Use Re:coded and χ Back Cover according to interest and time. After KHIII, consider Re Mind and the new story scenes in Melody of Memory.
This is a practical minimum, not an official KH4 requirement. No official source currently establishes a mandatory set of games that every KH4 player must complete.

Square Enix lists KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III] as on sale. It combines three packages:
- HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX: KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX-, Re:Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, KINGDOM HEARTS II -FINAL MIX-, Birth by Sleep -FINAL MIX- and Re:coded.
- HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue: 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-, Dream Drop Distance HD and χ Back Cover.
- KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind: KINGDOM HEARTS III and the Re Mind DLC.

Check the format before buying
The collection’s title list does not mean every entry is a full playable game. 358/2 Days, Re:coded and χ Back Cover may be delivered as cinematic story presentations, while the exact contents can vary between platforms and regions.
- Confirm the platform-specific contents page before purchase.
- Check whether a listed title is playable or presented as a movie.
- Verify the region, especially when comparing physical and digital editions.
- Do not assume that a package containing a story presentation includes the original version’s gameplay.
Choosing between playing, watching and recapping

What is actually known about Kingdom Hearts 4
The currently established information does not provide a verified KH4 release date, a complete platform list or an official prerequisite list. Avoid treating a rumored window, retailer listing or fan-made checklist as confirmation.
The safest preparation is therefore to understand the series through KHIII, then review officially announced KH4 information again when a release date and platforms are confirmed. The route in this guide reflects story continuity and newcomer accessibility, not a statement that Square Enix requires a particular homework list.

- Starting with a prequel: chronological order can reveal mysteries earlier than intended. Begin with KINGDOM HEARTS -FINAL MIX-.
- Skipping Re:Chain of Memories without learning its plot: its card combat is optional to endure, but its bridge story is not wise to ignore.
- Assuming every collection entry is playable: verify whether 358/2 Days, Re:coded and χ Back Cover are movies or games in your edition.
- Putting Dream Drop Distance after KHIII: it is a key setup chapter and belongs before the third numbered game.
- Confusing a recap with a playthrough: note which stories you watched so you know what gameplay systems and optional scenes you have not experienced.
- Expecting an official KH4 checklist: no verified mandatory list has been published in the information currently available.
How the series’ scale affects your plan
Kingdom Hearts is a long-running commercial series. Square Enix reported more than 37 million global package shipments and digital sales for the series in 2024, and more than five million global shipments and digital sales for KHIII since its 2019 launch. Those are publisher-reported totals, not independently audited estimates, but they explain why the franchise now spans several collections, platforms and story formats.
That scale is also why a newcomer should choose a route rather than attempt to consume everything indiscriminately. Prioritize the games that introduce or resolve the central characters, use story presentations for entries designed as supplemental context, and check the exact edition before assuming how a title is delivered.
