SEGA describes the upcoming Persona 4 Revival as a remake of Golden, which itself expands the original Persona 4. Golden gives a first-time player the original story alongside its documented additions. The PS2 original is optional: choose it if you specifically want to compare the earlier release or explore the series’ history.
Why is Golden the better choice before Revival?
The clearest reason is SEGA’s description: Persona 4 Revival is a remake of Persona 4 Golden, not simply an unspecified remake of the original. SEGA’s June 8, 2026 announcement describes it as “a remake of the globally-acclaimed Persona 4 Golden.” Golden is an enhanced and extended version of Persona 4, so it is the most relevant single version to experience before the remake.

That recommendation is about choosing a useful playthrough, not trying to predict every detail of the remake. The official material reviewed does not provide a complete feature-by-feature list confirming that every addition in Golden will return unchanged in Revival.
What does Persona 4 Golden add to the original?
In its January 24, 2013 European release announcement, NIS America called Golden an “enhanced and extended version” of Persona 4. For that historical PlayStation Vita release, it listed:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Both Major & Minor Arcana
- Rigid Storage Box w/ Matte Finish
- New story events featuring an all-new character.
- New Personas and new anime cutscenes.
- Remastered visuals.
- One and a half times the amount of voiced dialogue as the original, according to the announcement.
- An online dungeon rescue feature.
Those details explain why Golden is a fuller way to encounter the original game before Revival. The announcement’s Vita context describes that release; it does not establish that Vita is Golden’s only platform today.
Do you need to play the original Persona 4 first?
No. The available official descriptions do not make the original a prerequisite. Golden is an expanded version of it, and it is the version Revival is officially said to remake. Playing both the original and Golden first is therefore unnecessary for someone who wants one preparation playthrough.
Choose the original if you want historical context
The original makes sense if your goal is to compare the earlier release with Golden or to experience the series’ history in release order. That is a preference, not required preparation for Revival.
Choose Golden if you want one version to play
For a first-time player deciding between the two, Golden is the practical choice: it includes the original’s foundation plus the additions identified by NIS America. You do not need to complete the original first to make that choice.

What is confirmed about Persona 4 Revival?
As announced on June 8, 2026, Revival is scheduled for February 18, 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and Steam, according to SEGA. The official regional game site also lists Nintendo Switch 2, with that version scheduled for May 20, 2027. Dates and platform listings are announcement details; availability can differ by region and edition.
SEGA says the remake will enhance graphics, UI, combat, and cutscenes. The official site also describes new seasonal events, new scenes, voiced Social Links and new events, and remastered music. Those announcements establish the developer’s stated plans, not independent confirmation of how the finished game will compare feature by feature with Golden.

In an August 27, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Kazuhisa Wada, ATLUS General Producer of the Persona team, said the team wanted to preserve the story, characters, and defining themes while changing the visuals, presentation, exploration, and gameplay feel. That is the team’s stated intent; it is not a review of the unreleased game.

If you would rather experience the remake’s updated presentation, waiting is reasonable: its announced release is in the future, and the official descriptions include changes to visuals and gameplay. If you want to know the story before then, play Golden. The official sources do not establish that the remake will reproduce every Golden addition exactly, so do not treat a Golden playthrough as a guarantee of feature parity.
