Play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time before The Wind Waker if you want the clearest story context. Nintendo’s official chronology puts Ocarina of Time before the timeline divides, then places The Wind Waker on the Adult Era branch after Hyrule is flooded. The later game is designed to stand alone, but its opening assumes that the player understands the legend of the Hero of Time—the title associated with Link’s role in Ocarina of Time.
The short answer: start with Ocarina of Time
Ocarina of Time is the single most useful game to play before The Wind Waker. It establishes the historical event that causes the Zelda timeline to split and introduces the Hero of Time whose legend survives in The Wind Waker’s flooded world.

This is a recommendation for context, not a requirement. The Wind Waker opens on a small island long after the older events. Its residents remember the Hero of Time through stories and customs rather than requiring the player to know every detail of the earlier adventure. You can begin with The Wind Waker and follow its immediate plot, but Ocarina of Time makes the setting’s reverence, loss and visual references more meaningful.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow the games fit in Nintendo’s timeline
Nintendo’s official Zelda history places Ocarina of Time before the timeline divides into separate eras. On the Adult Era route, a later catastrophe floods Hyrule; The Wind Waker takes place in that ocean-covered world. Majora’s Mask, by contrast, appears on the Child Era branch. That distinction matters because it makes Majora’s Mask a related experience rather than a direct setup for The Wind Waker.

Why Ocarina of Time matters to Wind Waker’s opening
The Hero of Time is a remembered figure
The Wind Waker does not begin by dropping Link into the same political situation as Ocarina of Time. Instead, it presents a culture that has inherited a legend. On the opening island, the Hero of Time is remembered as a figure from the past, and the community’s coming-of-age custom echoes his age and green clothing.
“On a small island in the middle of the ocean, where the legend of the Hero of Time is being passed down, it is customary to celebrate when young boys reach the age of twelve, the same age as the hero, by dressing them in green.”

This detail gives the earlier game a concrete payoff. The green outfit is not merely a costume cue for the audience; within The Wind Waker’s world, it is part of a tradition built around a heroic predecessor. Playing Ocarina of Time first lets you recognize the difference between the original hero’s lived adventure and the later islanders’ simplified memory of him.
The timeline split explains why the world feels changed
Nintendo’s chronology shows the timeline dividing after Ocarina of Time. The Wind Waker belongs to the Adult Era route, where the old kingdom is no longer presented as an ordinary land kingdom. The ocean and scattered islands are consequences of that history, so the game’s geography is part of its backstory rather than a disconnected new setting.
You do not need to memorize a complete timeline chart. The useful takeaway is narrower: Ocarina of Time supplies the prior age, the Hero of Time and the historical point from which The Wind Waker’s Adult Era develops.
A spoiler-light way to approach the connection
Think of Ocarina of Time as the experience that creates a legend, and The Wind Waker as the experience that shows how a later society remembers it. That framing gives you the important relationship without requiring a scene-by-scene recap or a complete chronology lesson.

When you begin The Wind Waker, pay attention to three layers of information. First, notice what the island community says about the Hero of Time. Second, notice how its customs turn that memory into a local tradition. Third, compare the remembered hero’s age and clothing with the new Link’s circumstances. Those details are enough to make the opening’s references land; you do not need to identify every repeated name or visual echo.
The contrast is also the point. Nintendo’s description presents a small island in the middle of an ocean, not the land-based kingdom associated with the older legend. The difference between the old age and the flooded world is intentional context, not evidence that you missed an intermediate game.
What Ocarina of Time adds, in practical terms
- A protagonist with historical weight: You experience Link’s original role rather than hearing about him only as a legend.
- A reason to notice the timeline: Nintendo presents the game as the point before the eras diverge.
- Context for the green-clothing tradition: The opening custom in The Wind Waker becomes a deliberate cultural memory.
- A baseline for the later world: The contrast between a remembered Hyrule and a flooded, island-based setting becomes immediately legible.
These benefits concern narrative and world-building. They do not mean that every character, location or plot beat from Ocarina of Time returns in the same form.
What you do not need from the preceding game
You do not have to finish a second branch, read a timeline guide or retain every detail of Ocarina of Time to understand the target game. The essential preparation is limited to the identity of the Hero of Time, the fact that Nintendo places the timeline split after Ocarina of Time, and the Adult Era’s flooded-Hyrule setting.
That makes the choice flexible. A first-time player can treat Ocarina of Time as a full adventure and then carry its broad historical impression forward. A returning player who remembers only the major premise can go directly to The Wind Waker without stopping for a complete replay. The game’s own opening supplies the immediate island, family and legend setup.
Where Majora’s Mask fits—and why it is optional
Majora’s Mask is the natural game to consider after Ocarina of Time if you want to explore the other timeline branch. Nintendo places it in the Child Era, separate from the Adult Era path leading to The Wind Waker.
That makes it valuable for players who want a fuller picture of how the Zelda chronology branches, or who want another adventure built from the foundation of Ocarina of Time. It is not, however, a missing chapter in the direct setup for The Wind Waker. Nothing in Nintendo’s chronology requires you to finish Majora’s Mask before sailing into the flooded world.

Choose Majora’s Mask before Wind Waker when…
- You want to follow the Child Era as its own route.
- You enjoy seeing how a sequel can take a different direction from the same historical starting point.
- You are studying the broad Zelda timeline rather than preparing only for The Wind Waker.
Skip it until later when…
- Your goal is the most direct narrative preparation for The Wind Waker.
- You have limited time and want one preceding game.
- You prefer to avoid switching to a separate timeline branch before the target game.
Recommended play orders
Minimum context order
- Play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
- Play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
This is the best order for most readers. It gives you the direct historical foundation without adding a branch that Nintendo places elsewhere.
Recommended Free Tools
Expanded timeline order
- Play Ocarina of Time.
- Play Majora’s Mask as the Child Era follow-up.
- Play The Wind Waker on the Adult Era route.
This order is useful when your interest is the split itself. Treat Majora’s Mask as a detour through the alternate branch, not as a prerequisite whose plot must be remembered to understand the ocean setting.
Wind Waker first
- Start with The Wind Waker.
- Return to Ocarina of Time afterward if the Hero of Time references make you curious.
This remains a valid choice. The opening supplies enough immediate information to establish its island community, its legend and Link’s personal situation. The trade-off is that some historical resonance arrives as background rather than as a connection you already recognize.
A practical decision checklist
Use this quick test before choosing your order:
- Want one game that explains the most? Choose Ocarina of Time.
- Want both branches represented? Add Majora’s Mask, then move to The Wind Waker.
- Want to reach the target immediately? Start with The Wind Waker; its opening is self-contained enough to orient you.
- Want the next chronological adventure? Save Phantom Hourglass for after The Wind Waker.
This separates story relevance from personal preference. Ocarina of Time ranks first for direct context, while the other choices answer different goals rather than competing prerequisites.
What to play after The Wind Waker
Phantom Hourglass belongs after, not before, The Wind Waker. Nintendo describes its events as occurring “A few months after the adventures in the Wind Waker…” and follows Link as he sets out with Tetra’s pirates in search of a new land.

If you want to continue the same broad story line, use this sequence:
- Ocarina of Time for the historical foundation.
- The Wind Waker for the flooded-world adventure.
- Phantom Hourglass for the explicitly stated later journey.
Do not move Phantom Hourglass into the pre-play list simply because it shares characters and setting ideas. Its premise assumes that you have already completed the adventure it follows.

Choosing an edition or platform
Nintendo’s history page identifies the original editions as Nintendo 64 for Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, GameCube for The Wind Waker and Nintendo DS for Phantom Hourglass. Those are historical release details, not a guarantee of current retail stock, digital availability, subscription access or regional compatibility.

- Region: Check whether the release is compatible with your console and account region.
- Edition identity: Verify that you are purchasing the game you intend to play, rather than a soundtrack, guide or a different Zelda title with a similar listing.
Because availability changes, a present-day recommendation should be based on the storefronts and hardware accessible to you rather than on the original release platform alone.
How much of Ocarina of Time do you need to remember?
You do not need to carry a scene-by-scene summary into The Wind Waker. The useful preparation is conceptual:
- Understand that the earlier game features the Hero of Time.
- Know that Nintendo places the timeline split after Ocarina of Time.
- Recognize that The Wind Waker follows the Adult Era route after Hyrule is flooded.
If you played Ocarina of Time years ago, these three ideas are enough to restore the relevant context. Replaying it is worthwhile when you want to experience the source of the legend directly, but a complete timeline study is unnecessary for following the target game.

Assuming the original platform proves current access
A Nintendo 64, GameCube or Nintendo DS release date does not tell you whether a current version is sold, included in a subscription or compatible with your hardware. Check those facts separately for your region.
Putting Phantom Hourglass before Wind Waker
Nintendo places it a few months afterward. It is a sequel-style next step, not preparation for the opening game.
Decision guide: which order is right for you?
| Your priority | Best order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Understand the direct historical references | Ocarina of Time → The Wind Waker | It supplies the Hero of Time and the pre-split historical foundation. |
| Explore both timeline branches | Ocarina of Time → Majora’s Mask → The Wind Waker | It lets you visit the Child Era before returning to the Adult Era route. |
| Reach the target game quickly | The Wind Waker first | The game is playable on its own; you can add Ocarina of Time later for context. |
| Continue the same story after finishing | The Wind Waker → Phantom Hourglass | Nintendo describes Phantom Hourglass as taking place a few months later. |
Final recommendation
For one game before The Wind Waker, choose Ocarina of Time. It is the direct context pick because Nintendo’s history places it before the timeline split and because The Wind Waker’s islanders preserve the legend of its Hero of Time. Add Majora’s Mask only if you want the Child Era branch as a separate experience. Save Phantom Hourglass for afterward, where it belongs as the next chapter.
