Add tweezers, good lighting, and a way to organize small parts. You only need a soldering iron, solder, flux, and desoldering wick if the repair involves soldered connections.
Start with diagnosis and safe access
There is no single kit for every device. Fasteners, case designs, internal components, and repair tasks differ, so choose tools for the device and job rather than buying features you may not use.

Digital multimeter
A digital multimeter is a useful first diagnostic tool for checking continuity, voltage, and resistance. iFixit’s multimeter basics guide introduces these measurements. Select a meter with the functions and ratings suitable for the work, clear safety instructions, and leads in good condition; follow its manual and the device-specific repair instructions.

Choose driver bits that match the device’s fasteners. A poorly fitting bit can slip or damage a screw, so do not force it if it does not seat securely. Check the repair instructions for the device before choosing a set.

Plastic opening tools
Plastic picks and spudgers help separate cases and manipulate delicate parts. Prefer ESD-safe tools around sensitive electronics. iFixit’s tool best practices warns that metal spudgers are not ESD-safe and can cause harm or damage if misused; iFixit EDU also describes ESD-safe opening tools. Match the tool’s edge and shape to the access point rather than levering forcefully.
Tweezers, lighting, and organization
Fine tweezers can help handle small parts, while good lighting makes connectors and fasteners easier to inspect. A parts tray or another simple organizer helps keep screws and components together during disassembly. These are useful supporting items, not requirements with one universally correct specification.

Add soldering tools only for soldered repairs
If the job requires joining or reworking soldered connections, the basic setup includes a soldering iron with a stable stand and suitable solder. Flux supports soldering, and desoldering wick (also called braid) can help remove solder. iFixit’s beginner’s soldering guide covers the basic setup and solder choices; its soldering guidance lists an iron, stand, and solder as basic equipment. Choose an iron and tip suited to the work and follow the product instructions. One iFixit guide gives 25–50 W as a general range for basic soldering, not a universal specification.
For safe soldering, keep the hot iron in its stand, never leave it unattended, wear eye protection, and ventilate the work area or use fume extraction. iFixit notes that soldering irons can exceed 400 °C (800 °F) in its March 28, 2024 beginner’s guide. Wash your hands after soldering, particularly when working with leaded solder, and keep the workspace clear. Choose a kit or assemble tools individually
A starter kit can be convenient, while buying individual tools lets you match each one to a specific device or task. Compare what is actually included and whether the drivers, opening tools, and meter suit your intended repairs. No particular product model or feature set is necessary for everyone.

Set up safely before opening a device
- Disconnect the device from power before opening or testing it, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the device and battery.
- Use the correct ESD precautions for the device and components, and prefer ESD-safe tools around sensitive internals.
- Do not treat a beginner repair kit as preparation for probing live mains circuits or opening high-voltage equipment. Those jobs can involve hazards beyond basic repair.
- Keep soldering precautions distinct from general electrical safety: a stand, ventilation, and eye protection reduce soldering risks but do not make every repair safe.
