Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatorio was a planned follow-up to Visceral Games’ 2010 action game, but it never became a released game. In November 2025, IGN reported on previously unseen development materials, including concept art, cutscene storyboards, screenshots of early level geometry and a 240-page script. Writer Joshua Rubin corroborated that he wrote the script at Visceral in 2010 and said it explored both a war between angels and demons and Dante’s inner conflict.

What was the canceled sequel about?

The reported project was referred to as Dante’s Inferno 2: Purgatorio or Dante’s Purgatorio. Its title points toward Purgatory, the next major realm in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy after Inferno, but the available material does not establish a complete plot summary or confirm how the game would have adapted that setting.

Rubin described the script as dealing with two intertwined conflicts: a struggle between angels and demons, and Dante’s internal struggle. That description comes from Rubin’s own public account, rather than a later reconstruction of the story. He wrote: “Fifteen years ago, I wrote the sequel to EA’s hit video game DANTE’S INFERNO — the one that never got made, the one that fans have asked about ever since.” Rubin’s post identifies 2010 as the year he wrote it at Visceral Games.

What did the revealed materials show?

IGN reported that sources close to the project supplied concept art, storyboards for cutscenes, screenshots of rudimentary level geometry and Rubin’s 240-page script. The script reportedly mapped out planned stages, boss battles and plot points. These materials offer a glimpse of design and story development, not evidence of a finished game or a confirmed playable build.

IGN’s account was published in November 2025 and republished by Yahoo Tech. The report presents the project documents as newly surfaced material; this was not an EA announcement of a revived game. Read the IGN report republished by Yahoo Tech.

How did the plan relate to the original game?

EA announced Dante’s Inferno for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PSP, with a 2010 release. Visceral Games developed the title, which drew on Inferno, the first part of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. EA’s announcement covered the original game and platforms, while another EA announcement identified its literary source.

Dante's Inferno - Xbox 360
  • Over 60 weapons, magic and combo upgrades and modifications, and huge destructive, ridable mounts that can be taken from defeated enemies.
  • An epic story adapted from the first book of the Medieval Italian classic The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri featuring non-stop action as you fight through Dante's allegorical nine circles of hell.
  • The awesome power of Death's soul-reaping scythe.
  • Beautiful fast-paced action and intense combat rendered at 60 frames-per-second.
  • Choice-based finishes with enemies that allow players to punish the damned, or absolve them as they are defeated.

The sequel’s Purgatorio name and Rubin’s description suggest a shift from the original’s literary starting point, but the evidence does not support claims about specific gameplay systems, multiplayer, or a fully mapped trilogy. The clearest comparison is between the original released game and a follow-up documented through a script and early visual-development materials.

Why was Dante’s Purgatorio canceled?

The reported documents and Rubin’s account establish that the project was written and planned, but they do not give a definitive reason for its cancellation. No single cause—such as a sales result, a change in strategy or a production problem—is established by these sources, so assigning one would go beyond what has been reported.

Was there a special edition of the original?

EA’s 2009 announcement for the PlayStation 3 Divine Edition listed developer commentary, a digital art book by Wayne Barlowe, the soundtrack and a digital version of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s translation of Inferno. That announcement documents what the historical edition included; it does not establish current availability. See EA’s Divine Edition announcement.
