Codename: Frontiers was Bungie’s umbrella name for planned Destiny 2 innovations, not the title of a single expansion. Its September 2024 announcement outlined a possible new annual cadence; the expansion first called Codename: Apollo ultimately launched as The Edge of Fate on July 15, 2025.
What Bungie meant by “Frontiers”
In its September 9, 2024 announcement, Bungie described Codename: Frontiers as the name for “major innovations coming to Destiny over the next few years.” The initiative began with an expansion then known as Codename: Apollo. Frontiers was therefore a label for a broader direction and plans—not the retail name of the next expansion.

Game Director Tyson Green said, “We believe it’s time for Destiny to change and evolve, and that our community wants this game to grow and innovate too.” Bungie discussed experimenting with nonlinear campaigns, exploration experiences, roguelike formats and survival shooters, alongside potential changes to activities, rewards, raids, dungeons and armor. Those were development directions, not a guarantee that every format or change would ship.
What the 2024 roadmap proposed
Bungie proposed a different annual structure: two expansions and four free major updates each year. The figures describe the plan announced in September 2024, not a continuing commitment. Bungie explicitly cautioned that its roadmap and plans could change during development.

The point of the proposal was to move beyond the familiar pattern of one large, one-shot campaign as the main annual change. Bungie’s discussion of different campaign and activity formats indicated an ambition to vary how Destiny’s content played, while leaving the eventual scope open.
How Frontiers led to The Edge of Fate
In an April 10, 2025 update, Bungie said Codename: Frontiers was coming in summer 2025. By July 10, it had announced that The Edge of Fate would launch on July 15, 2025, beginning both Year of Prophecy and the franchise’s Fate Saga. That is the concrete release outcome for the expansion introduced within the Frontiers plans.

In its December 11, 2024 developer update, Bungie described Apollo’s campaign as nonlinear and said its destination was content complete at that point in development. That update helps trace the project from its codename toward release; it does not make Frontiers the expansion’s final name.

Frontiers signaled that Bungie wanted to explore broader changes to Destiny 2’s campaign structure and ongoing content, rather than simply announce a new expansion title. But the proposal should be read as a development roadmap, not proof that every discussed mode, system or annual release count was delivered exactly as described.

For later context, a Bungie developer insight published May 28, 2026 discussed the return of the Director, named Kepler and the Lawless Frontier among destinations, and covered destination loot refreshes. Those details describe what Bungie discussed on that date; they are not a guarantee that the systems remain unchanged.
