Tom Clancy’s XDefiant was a free-to-play, faction-based shooter announced by Ubisoft in 2021. It is no longer playable: Ubisoft stopped new downloads, registrations and purchases on December 3, 2024, and retired the online service in June 2025.

What Ubisoft announced for XDefiant

On July 19, 2021, Ubisoft introduced XDefiant as a first-person shooter built around fast-paced 6-v-6 arena combat and faction abilities. The concept combined customizable characters and loadouts with teams drawn from Ubisoft game universes. Ubisoft’s announcement described arena and linear modes, including Domination and Escort.

Factions, abilities and loadouts

The factions named at announcement were Wolves from Ghost Recon, Echelon from Splinter Cell, and Outcasts and Cleaners from The Division. Ubisoft said players could customize loadouts with primary and secondary weapons, attachments and a device, and could switch loadouts after respawning. It also said future factions could come from Ubisoft properties and beyond.

Platforms Ubisoft planned

In 2021, Ubisoft listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Stadia, Luna and Ubisoft Connect as planned platforms, with full crossplay expected at launch. Those were plans in the original announcement, not a list of platforms on which the game can be played now.

Why did Ubisoft shut XDefiant down?

Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024 that it would discontinue development. The company said XDefiant had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete at the level it wanted in the demanding free-to-play FPS market, and that the game was too far from the results needed to justify further significant investment. Ubisoft’s discontinuation announcement acknowledged an encouraging start and a committed fan base, but said those were not enough to sustain the game.

Executive producer Mark Rubin wrote, “Free-to-play, in particular, is a long journey.” Rubin also said XDefiant broke an internal record for the fastest game to surpass 5 million users and that “over 15 million players play our game.” These are Rubin’s attributed statements in 2024, not independently audited player-count figures. Rubin’s community message also discussed refunds for eligible players following the shutdown announcement.

When did XDefiant stop working?

Ubisoft stopped new downloads, player registrations and purchases on December 3, 2024. The company said Season 3 would still launch and that servers would remain active through June 3, 2025. Ubisoft’s legacy-services listing records June 4, 2025 as the retirement date. The dates refer to the same cutoff from different angles: the announced final day for servers was June 3, with service retirement dated June 4. XDefiant’s online service has ended, so it cannot be played online now.

What happened to the XDefiant team?

Ubisoft said nearly half of the worldwide XDefiant team would move to other Ubisoft roles. It also announced the closure of its San Francisco and Osaka production studios and a ramp-down of its Sydney site. In its December 2024 statement, Ubisoft said 143 people would depart in San Francisco and that 134 people were likely to depart in Osaka and Sydney. The latter figure was stated as a likelihood, not as a confirmed final departure count. Ubisoft’s team-impact statement described these changes alongside the game’s discontinuation.
