Essential covers a smaller catalog and console multiplayer; Premium adds a larger catalog and cloud gaming; Ultimate adds day-one releases and more bundled services; PC Game Pass is designed for PC players who want day-one PC games and EA Play.
What each Xbox Game Pass tier includes
Xbox’s plan pages list the following features and catalog sizes. Catalog figures are Xbox’s published counts, not guarantees that every game is available in every region or on every platform.
| Plan | Xbox-listed features | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games across Xbox console, PC, and supported devices; online console multiplayer; in-game benefits. No new releases on day one. | Console players who want multiplayer and a starter catalog, but do not need day-one releases. |
| Premium | 200+ games across Xbox console, PC, and supported devices; cloud gaming; online console multiplayer; in-game benefits. Xbox-published games join the library within one year of launch. | Players who want a larger catalog and streaming and are willing to wait for Xbox-published games. |
| Ultimate | 500+ games across console, PC, and supported devices; day-one games; cloud gaming; in-game benefits; Fortnite Crew, EA Play, and Ubisoft+ Classics. | Players who expect to use day-one access, cloud play, or the bundled services enough to justify the higher price. |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games; day-one PC releases; in-game benefits; EA Play. Xbox says cloud gaming is not included. | PC players who want the PC catalog and EA Play. |
Xbox states that “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, Game Pass plan, and platform.” Check the Xbox Game Pass plan page for the live catalog and details for your market.
Which plan should you get?
- Start with your platform. If you play only on PC, compare PC Game Pass with Ultimate: choose based on whether you need Ultimate’s console access, cloud features, and broader service bundle. If you play on console, compare Essential, Premium, and Ultimate.
- Decide how much day-one access matters. Xbox lists day-one releases with Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium adds Xbox-published games within one year of launch, while Essential does not include new releases on day one.
- Check your must-play games. Search the current catalog before subscribing. Xbox says access ends if your subscription ends or a game leaves the catalog; availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform.
- Count only benefits you would use. EA Play is included with Ultimate and PC Game Pass; Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics are listed with Ultimate. A bundle is worth more to you only if its services or games match what you play.
- Compare the recurring local price. Promotions can make a first payment look cheaper than the ongoing subscription. Xbox’s US comparison page, accessed October 7, 2026, displayed Ultimate at $22.99 per month and Premium at $14.99 per month after a listed first-14-days-for-$1 offer. The page says subscriptions continue automatically. Prices and offers change and differ by market; check the live Xbox plan comparison before purchase. These figures do not establish prices for Essential or PC Game Pass.
- Do not pay for multiplayer you do not need. Xbox says multiplayer access for free-to-play games on Xbox is open to every Xbox player, so a paid plan is not required just for those games.
How to think about cloud gaming and catalogs
Premium and Ultimate list cloud gaming, while Xbox’s FAQ says PC Game Pass does not include it. The US comparison page accessed October 7, 2026 lists a limit of 10 hours per month for Premium and 15 hours per month for Ultimate. These are Xbox’s current displayed plan-page limits for the US, not independent measurements or a guarantee for other regions; confirm the terms on the live page.

Essential is the console-oriented choice for multiplayer and a smaller catalog; Premium adds more games and cloud gaming for players who can wait for Xbox-published releases; Ultimate is the broadest bundle for day-one access, cloud play, and partner services; and PC Game Pass targets PC players seeking day-one PC releases and EA Play. The right tier is the lowest-priced option that includes the games, platform access, and benefits you will actually use.
