The exact line “We must rely on the past, but we cannot rely on the past” is not verified in the cited reporting, so it should not be treated as a confirmed quote from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma—or any other Xbox chief. The closest documented idea comes from Sharma’s February 2026 interview: she said she wanted to understand why earlier decisions were made, while judging them against Xbox’s founding spirit and longer-term value. That distinction—learning from history without treating it as a rulebook—is a useful way to understand Xbox’s evolving strategy, but it is an interpretation, not her verified wording.
What has Xbox CEO Asha Sharma actually said?
In a February 24, 2026 interview with Windows Central, Sharma described “Return to Xbox” as a return to the team’s founding spirit. She characterized that spirit as a willingness to try things others would not, and said she was still learning the reasoning behind the company’s existing decisions. “Right now, I need to learn, candidly,” she said. Sharma also said she was looking at lifetime value, rather than judging choices only by a previous moment or short-term efficiencies. That suggests a decision-making approach that considers what a strategy contributes over time, not merely whether it worked in one period. It does not establish that she plans to reverse any particular past decision, nor that she used the title’s exact wording.

As an interpretation of Sharma’s sourced remarks, the idea is to treat earlier Xbox decisions as evidence to examine, not instructions that must be followed. That means asking why a choice was made, what its results were, and whether its original assumptions still fit players and the business now. The same history can preserve useful lessons while also revealing that conditions have changed.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
This matters because Xbox strategy involves trade-offs that cannot be assessed from a single snapshot. A move that produces short-term efficiency might affect the long-term value of the console audience, games, or subscription service. Conversely, returning to a founding identity does not necessarily mean restoring every old policy or product. Sharma’s interview establishes her stated emphasis on learning and lifetime value; it does not declare a winner among competing strategies.
How does that approach show up in Xbox’s current plans?
Console remains central, alongside a broader device future
In reporting on an internal Xbox town hall published October 6, 2026, Windows Central described renewed investment in Xbox Series X|S, the current console generation. Sharma also characterized the next generation, referred to as Gen 10 or Helix in the report, as a family of devices. She said, “We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go.” The report described potential partnerships as plans develop, but did not identify partners or establish what devices they might produce. The combination points to a console-first commitment with room for other ways to play. It is not evidence that Xbox is abandoning hardware, nor does it settle the design, timing, or availability of Gen 10 devices.
Exclusivity and other choices were still under review
Game File’s April 24, 2026 coverage discussed Xbox leadership’s consideration of Game Pass, the game slate, console investment, exclusivity, release windows, and AI. It reported that no exclusivity decision had been made at that point. That is a dated account of an ongoing review, not confirmation of Xbox’s position after April. Read Game File’s coverage.

For players, the distinction is practical: a strategic question being discussed is not the same as a policy change. The April report does not establish which games, if any, would become exclusive or multiplatform, or what release-window rules Xbox would adopt.
What should players watch for?
Rather than infer a policy from the unverified title line, track the choices Xbox makes and the outcomes it cites. The relevant questions include:

The cited coverage does not provide enough evidence to say that one strategic direction is superior. Those are useful tests for interpreting future decisions, not proof of what Xbox has decided.

Earlier Xbox leadership offers context for why examining past choices can matter. In a November 15, 2021 Axios interview, then-Xbox leader Phil Spencer reflected on Xbox Live and Kinect as experiences that helped broaden the company’s understanding of who plays games and what barriers can keep people out. He said Xbox Live gave the company “a direct, real-time connection to the community of people that play.” His comments illustrate how past products can inform later thinking; they do not verify the title’s wording or establish Sharma’s current plans.
